The Chalet School and the Shitty OFSTED Inspection?

Report

Yars, the trips met Mary Lou when they started again in Wales, no? After the war? But I'm not sure when Robin went to Canada (home of brisk snappiness and secret lovers).

I need to crack on with the transcripts.

But first, some milky coffee and pretty twists of bread for des madchens.

Just reading Bride at the Chalet School. Enjoying all the talk about Diana being snobbish while remarking her 'common' accent at the same time.

I've also taken the plunge and ordered two of the Kingscote novels (Antonia Forest) at vast- for me- expense. I've been waiting forever for them to be reprinted, so that'll probably happen next month now!

The DH series left me with a liking for the name Dinah. While the CS books mean that I would now consider the names Blossom and Cherry for future dds...

Been and dug out Three Go To The CS and "(Mary Lou) had heard of "Auntie Rob" and "Auntie Daisy" who weren't real aunts at all, but lived at Plas Gwyn when they weren't away".

So Robin had left school by the time Mary Lou started, but presumably knew her out of school via visiting Jo.

How did Robin become Jem Russell's ward? I thought she was the daughter of an old family friend of Madge's, so surely she would have been the legal guardian.

I think there is a thread in Classics about the Chalet School and OFSTED.

One thing about Joey - she was smuggery personified in the later books but she never swanked about being bezza mates with a princess even if that is most likely because EBD forgot about it

Loving all these threads. Can I join? I will bring Kartoffeln and gay tablecloths.

She must have been ward-by-marriage Summerbreezing

Report
LeapingOverTheWall · 14/05/2014 12:36

as the husband Jem would have been the legal guardian in those days I'd've thought. A lot of the business side of the school gets left to "the men" to deal with

Thanks Select. Trivial question, I know, but it just puzzled me for some reason I have no life

Mad, wasn't it Leaping. In The Chalet School Goes To It, Jack and Jem decide that Joey will move to the UK and Jack will 'tell' her that evening.

Didn't Robin's father work with Jem Russell at the San? Not as a Dr, but as an administrator or secretary or something? So maybe he asked Jem to take on the Robin.

I have a Very important question which has bugged me for years: how do you say Inter V?

Inter Vee?
Inter Five?
InterFifth?

Report
LeapingOverTheWall · 14/05/2014 12:41

and at the beginning of Island (I think) jack blurts out that Margot is off to Canada with Madge - "oops I wasn't supposed to tell you that till later". You'd think that if your daughter was being packed off for bracing air etc, you might have been involved in the discussions about it [ shock]

Report
SilverDragonfly1 · 14/05/2014 12:42

In my head I say Inter Vee, but I expect it'd be Inter Fifth really.

I was wondering how I would occupy my time once the old thread was gone. I might have had to do... you know... Shock some housework...

Robin was left with the Russells as guardians when her dad had a mountaineering accident. Bette's husband was also killed. Thinking about it Bette then named her dd after the Robin, so there we have it, one child not named after Jo. maybe Bette found her irritating too

Mind you, after all the time Captain Humphries spent in Russia, I think actually he was a spy and he was on a mission really.

What SilverDragonfly said.

On a similar note, how would you pronounce Margia? Mar-jee-a? Mar-jya? Mar-GEE-a? (hard 'g')

There are times when I'd give a lot to be bundled into bed for a week with something popped into my hot milk to make sure I'd enjoy an uninterrupted slumber.

Select "Marjya" I think. Was she the piano genius, with the babyish sister who was Delicate?
