New thread for all the Chalet School fans!

OP posts:
WilsonFrickett · 25/05/2014 21:50

It's supposed to be contemporary fiction DeWee but they're all talking like they're in an Elsie book this week. Wonder why?

Sorry to hear about your FIL Flugella.

SockQueen · 25/05/2014 23:12

Just finished Chalet Girls Grow Up. Feeling a bit traumatised.

hels71 · 26/05/2014 07:42

I hated the chalet girls grow up........

flugella · 26/05/2014 11:39

Never read Chalet Girls Grow Up. Please tell me someone finally tells Jo to fuck off?

thebodylovesspring · 26/05/2014 11:46

The chalet girls grow up traumatised me.

As much as I laugh at the books I love them. The chalet girls grow up was monumentally depressing and quite nasty really.

She's not a fan and changed the characters completely.

thebodylovesspring · 26/05/2014 11:52

Just read a Sally Denny short story where len is a lesbian along with con/Ted and Jack/Jane.

Eye watering. Joey was cool with it.

Gott in Himmell.

thebodylovesspring · 26/05/2014 11:53

flugella my lamb you do realise that you will now either fall off a cliff or into a river as you have just dissed St Joey!!

Beware. Grin

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 26/05/2014 12:08

Thebody - search for Beecharmer and read All Change.

Daisymasie · 26/05/2014 17:54

I'm thinking of opening a thread in chat where people can post alternative versions of Chalet School stories. No more that a few hundred words. Is that allowed, does anyone know?

DeWee · 26/05/2014 22:05

We need a Chalet School topic, don't we?

It would be used more than Swine Flu topic that's on the main talk page anyway.

lessonsintightropes · 26/05/2014 23:39

DeWee I second that thread request!

Beeyump · 26/05/2014 23:42

I heartily third it.

hels71 · 27/05/2014 09:38

What a good idea!!!!!!! I fourth it!

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 09:40

And I inter V it.

But what about languages? Wink

Beeyump · 27/05/2014 09:42

Very witty, Wilson!

hels71 · 27/05/2014 09:44

Well today is Tuesday...is that German or French???

Daisymasie · 27/05/2014 10:58

I sixth, seventh and eighth it.

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 11:13

There is no rhyme or reason to the languages. I know you can speak whatever you like on Sunday (quietly, obvs, after you've been to mass and read your life of the Saints, in what Elsie (?) Stevens calls 'such gentle Sundays) and I think Saturday is English... So French Monday, German Tuesday, English Wednesday, French Thursday, German Friday???

I can see I'm going to have to be dumb for the rest of the term, said every new girl ever.

DeWee · 27/05/2014 11:25

Je parles le francais le plus mal mais, et je ne comprehend jamais l'answer...

Can you tell I was never any good at French? That probably means something rude really. Grin

German was one worse as they do strange things with the order of words in the sentence and put capitals everywhere including the funny B in the middle of words.
Mind you I had some sympathy with their idea of if you don't have a word for it, choose a description and run all the words together to make a new word.
Things like Diversion=thewayyoumustgowhenthewayyouwantedtogoisblocked. Wink

Sobs as her inability to be a true Chalet School girl is revealed.

hels71 · 27/05/2014 11:31

Don't worry. After a term at the Chalet you will be fluent in both languages....

fairnotfair · 27/05/2014 11:37

...although you will speak them with "a good British accent".

DeWee · 27/05/2014 11:46

But then I came across this in Kenya... "the girls let themselves go and when their French failed them, eked it out with English pronounced as Frenchily as possible"

I was totally shocked that such good Chalet School girls would think that way, and wondered if maybe I could fit in... But then our one and only Mary Lou had to interfere and set them on the right way. Sad I expect they all reported themselves anyway.

But I would be one up on all the other news girls I suppose. I would read the prospectus and know before I went about the language days so I didn't have to gasp in horror when told. Although thinking about it, maybe the prospectus realised that would put people off so deliberately omitted it.

MooncupGoddess · 27/05/2014 12:12

Teacher recruitment at the CS must have been a nightmare. It always seemed unlikely that Kathie Ferrars, a 22-year-old geography teacher, was pretty much fluent in French and German... imagine what a hassle it must have been to find good staff with both languages. Especially given that most of the staff are British and they have a tendency to leave to marry doctors.

RueDeWakening · 27/05/2014 12:28

There's something somewhere - maybe New Mistress about Kathie? - that says there are more spot tests on days when the mistresses aren't confident in the language.

Also, Mooncup, perhaps you've revealed the secret reason why only Old Girls ever come back to teach... :o

Whyamihere · 27/05/2014 13:10

I read some of the St Mildred's house stories on the Sally Denny Website, they were an eye opener, not sure if I can see Jack and Dr Jem in the same light again. I've stayed firmly away from Chalet Girls Grow Up as I'd heard it was not good for people who really did enjoy the CS series, I waver every now and then and nearly buy it but stop myself in time.
