To think sanitary pads are the work of the devil?

Just had an op and not allowed to use tampax for a while so for the first time ever having to use pads. The most uncomfortable thing ever if you actually want to move around and do outdoorsy stuff. Who actually chooses to use these?! Any tips on brands and what doesn't irritate your lady gardens gladly received. I don't wish to have to go totally bald down there to reduce irritation as re growth will be even more painful!

I don't mind the scented ones at all. They don't irritate me.
The things that do irritate me are wings! They never stay in place, they always scrunch up grr. I avoid at all costs.

Aspiringhuman · 10/05/2014 07:34

Scented ones are horrible. Otherwise I'm the opposite, I find tampons incredibly painful to use.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/05/2014 07:38

Cheeky - you shouldn't flush them, they can block drains and are an environmental problem, it has been standard advice for years not to flush anything except toilet roll. There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago, will try and find it.

AlpacaLypse · 10/05/2014 07:41

Tesco do a nice plain unsmelly pad for about 72p a packet. They're better than the Lidl equivalent (not often that happens!)

I'd qualify your OP - scented sanitary pads are the work of the devil!

ThreeLannistersOneTargaryen · 10/05/2014 07:42

I said I'd rather be a total whore than a diapered saint.

Grin My grandmother told me that you couldn't use tampons until after you were married. Fortunately I ignored that advice.

weatherall · 10/05/2014 07:43

Drama- you shouldn't be able to feel a tamp

weatherall · 10/05/2014 07:43

Ta

weatherall · 10/05/2014 07:44

Tampon!!!

Once it's in.

Maybe ask your practice nurse about this.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/05/2014 07:45

flushing thread

When pregnant with DD1 and then DD2 I had unstable placenta praevia which meant I was in hospital bleeding a lot. I also found the plasticky covers irritating. I found that Always Silk were more comfortable

LizzieMint · 10/05/2014 07:48

Cloth ones are brilliant, I have some fleece-topped ones and they are sooo much nicer than the plasticky disposable things.

eurochick · 10/05/2014 07:49

Cottons are the best. I hadn't used them in years but had an mc and then a pregnancy with a three week first tri bleed so did some extensive testing! Always are vile. Body form are bearable. Anything scented is the work of the devil. Cottons are the best of the bunch. You can get them in boots.

You can get natural cotton ones from Waitrose, health food shops which contain no chemicals, bleach, perfumes (which all the big brands have)

Never flush tampons!!!

Treaclepot · 10/05/2014 07:52

Cheeky, definately don't flush them, A usedd to go out with a plumber, he always to.d people not to flush as had come across loads of block loos. Also really unenvironmentally friendly.

meditrina · 10/05/2014 07:55

Most of the Always range are scented.

You're all don't want to risk reacting to that if already irritated. As OP is not a towel wearer, then I's swerve the whole brand soho don't buy the ones with the extra chemicals by mistake.

Bodyform are good (and softer than Always), and Kotex are fine (try pound shops).

Buttercup27 · 10/05/2014 07:56

I hate pads with a passion it's like wearing a nappy ! After having ds2 when I didn't need maternity pads I tried the new always infinity ones (I think that's what they are called) they were the ones made out of the weird new material. I really got on with them a bit expensive but they were nothing like a normal nappy pad. Really thin you couldn't feel it. Didn't bunch up or make me sore and soaked up so quickly it didn't feel like I kept wetting myself. Great experience (although couldn't wait to get back to tampax !)

mizu · 10/05/2014 07:56

Some of us have to use BOTH - for days Sad

BaconSarniePlease · 10/05/2014 08:11

I use both. Perhaps at the same time at the start of my period and then one or the other as it gets lighter, usually pad during the day and tampon at night (hate sleeping in underwear). I find tampons quite uncomfortable after the first day or two of flow, even lower absorbencies.

As dramajustfollowsme says, it's great to have a choice.

nostress · 10/05/2014 08:13

Im another one who doesnt like tampons. I can also feel them. I dont like wings. I have very light periods so only need pads for 3 days and have a really long cycle at 35-40days. Ive got washable ones as Im allergic to lots of things. They are ok but i still use disposable ones when out and about.

What do you all use at night time? I wouldnt trust a tampon for 8hrs + because of tss.

ithaka · 10/05/2014 08:19

I am long distance endurance rider & always use a sanitary pad when competing! I find granny pants, a small amount of sudocrem & a pad the comfiest combination for the long miles - I've done 160km using this tried & tested combination.

I don't like tampons - it feels wrong to me to contain something in your body that is supposed to be leaking out. It is like trying to stopper up urine or faeces, you are storing a bodily waste product inside you. That can't be right.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/05/2014 08:28

Loath tampons I've heard of women dying using them . And I've never had much luck with them.

Busymumto3dc · 10/05/2014 08:30

Urgh

They are horrible! I can't stand going to the loo and it just being sat there looking at you. Grim

Having to use towels was by far my worst part of giving birth

IwinIwin · 10/05/2014 08:36

YANBU, they are horrible. I was so glad when I started using tampons and then my mooncup. In fact I'm sure I broke my own hymen in my haste to use tampons at aged 13. Uncomfortable and you could really smell the blood when you pulled down your trousers-urgh. Not nice at all for me.

The best ones I did find were ones with wings, I used superdrugs own brand.

dontgocurly · 10/05/2014 08:40

I've never been able to use tampons. They always got stuck half in out. Holidays were fun. I'm no good with these things. Doctor couldn't examine me while I was in labor, said I 'wasn't letting him'. Smear takers always keep telling me to 'relax' as iif it was in my control!

Eventually after about years I tried small ones with a plastic applicator which I managed to use.

I was so happy for a day or two. Then I got really bad thrush. Doctor costs €55 and the non over the counter canesten tablet about €20. Couldn't afford that every month.

Back to fecking pads! Grrrr ...
