to lol at 'football related sadness'

Man on my facebook reckons he needs a day off work because of emotional stress, I said he should have one if he needs it and asked the reason why.

He said the footy results.

he is being deadly serious and saying he's suffering from 'football related sadness' and that he feels so alone and upset, he is crying.

Now I fully understand mental illness having suffered/suffering from it myself... but really?

Maybe a sign of something underlying you may say but I've known him for a good few years and football really does seem to get him down when his team loses!

Anyone else glad they don't have a partner who is obsessed with the football?!

I should clarify, enjoying football is not in itself stupid. My grandad did. It's the crazy hype and childish, self indulgent behaviour that is stupid. Grandad never had a sick day due to emotional distress or closed his production line due to a match.

Briliiant! Never thought I'd see another day when they both pulled on their boots together :)

BitOutOfPractice No thanks ;)

WooWooo · 06/05/2014 20:48

We have a babysitter booked for next Sunday and Monday off work.....

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/05/2014 20:51

I got a bit tearful when I saw that picture !
Gary Rowell more me too , Reuben Agboola , Gary Bennett etc.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/05/2014 20:56

My DH supports Chelsea and was very maudlin the other night.
I think they might be out of something or thereabouts, possibly a continental thing as they might have been playing somethingorother Madrid at the time?
Anyone know the details? Grin I daren't ask LOL

DadOnIce · 06/05/2014 21:06

I quite like football when England are playing, but I treat it very much as I do The X-factor or the Eurovision Song Contest - as a bit of entertainment to be enjoyed.

Can you imagine anyone booking a day off for the "emotional stress" if the UK fails to win Eurovision on Saturday? "Seventeen years of hurt, never stopped me dreaming, etc...."

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/05/2014 21:07

Atletico Madrid Juggling. They got spanked.

Susiesue61 · 06/05/2014 21:11

Sorry if I upset any Sunderland fans!! I just hate th season meandering to a close with no point to it.

EverythingsDozy · 06/05/2014 21:15

I love this thread!! I often wonder about MNers and football and just assume you all hate it and I'm the only one! It's nice having a bit of cheeky banter against football clubs without the men saying "what do you know about football? Do you want me to explain the offside rule? Get back in the kitchen" blah blah!

Sunderland are going to stay up, city are going to win the title and (since I can't say it on Facebook where everyone knows me) hahaha whooooooppppaaaaaa (!!) to Liverpool! Also, agree with jean - hoping Manchester United have many more days of FRS to come!

aderynlas · 06/05/2014 21:26

Chelsea wont get spanked sunday. We are not playing well and down already. Bet we actually go and win now. Football has taken us to brilliant cities all over England. Met lots of interesting supporters. If you dont have an interest in it, fine, how boring would life be if everyone was the same.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/05/2014 21:26

I just read that Mohammed Al Fayed has blamed Fulham being relegated on the new owners taking down the Michael Jackson statue Grin

TucsonGirl · 06/05/2014 21:28

We're finishing early at work for whichever England game starts at 5pm this World Cup. They were going to make it an optional early finish but so many people wanted to finish early they just said sod it and are closing the office 2 hours early.

Ledkr · 06/05/2014 21:31

I don't get as excited about international football as I do about Liverpool.
Will enjoy the World Cup though as I was pregnant at the last one so couldn't have a few drinks.

LuluJakey1 · 06/05/2014 21:39

DH is a Bantam- in the normal world known as a Bradford City fan. It runs in his blood- and his family. I am uninterested but try to show willing when he is just desperate to tell someone and there is just me. He is an otherwise very intelligent man but takes his football very seriously. Am baffled by it at times but there you go!

Lucyitsme · 06/05/2014 21:44

OP it's a difficult time for Liverpool fans. I saw a girl sobbing last night.

Andrewofgg · 06/05/2014 21:47

CPTart If your DH is watching 22 strangers on the idiot-box while his own son is playing in what to him will be an important match will you please tie him by his extremities to the four corners of a goal, leave him out all night in the cold, then chop off his gonads with a blunt knife which you have previously soaked in the urine of a rabid fox?

Just for me?

PersonFromPorlock · 06/05/2014 21:57

I have to admit to shedding tears when NUFC were relegated in 2009 but FRS doesn't generally last more than 20 minutes or so in our house.

Mind you, if Arsenal finish this season without a trophy I think DH will spontaneously combust rather than weep. And, if they do win, then I might get a bottle of Veuve Cliquot out of it - h's been saving it for a special occasion. My birthday was not it Hmm

DanFmDorking · 06/05/2014 22:09

Distressed Liverpool fans can call a new helpline 03 13 23 33

TequilaMockingbirdy · 06/05/2014 22:11

OP it's a difficult time for Liverpool fans. I saw a girl sobbing last night

Okay... I still have little sympathy though. The world hasn't ended. They're going to eat tonight. They have a roof over their heads. No-one has died. They have their jobs...

OP posts:
EverythingsDozy · 06/05/2014 22:28

Did you see Suarez sobbing? Now that was a sight to see! Rather him sobbing than sticking his teeth into someone's arm though...

TequilaMockingbirdy · 06/05/2014 22:50

I love the banana thing they've been doing. Brilliant way to fight back at racists. Not that they should have to... but brilliant to play them at their own game

JeanSeberg · 06/05/2014 23:42

Ha ha love it Dorking.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 07/05/2014 09:35

If football fans are allowed to call in Sick with frs then I want a day off for 'I watched 5 seasons of one program in a weekend and am feeling emotionally drained'

I can understand being upset but taking time off sick takes the piss. Especially when you get people getting grief off bosses for genuine illnesses.

Suttonmum1 · 07/05/2014 12:08

Very very proud Palace fan here. But I desperately wanted Liverpool to win the championship. Victoria and Sarah Hicks who died at 15 and 19 at Hillsborough went to my old school and it would have been fitting for Liverpool to win this year. I think the 25 year anniversary has added to the deep emotion displayed on Monday night.

I also know someone who played football with another person who died there. If I have those links just think how many people someone who is from Liverpool will be thinking about as they are standing there crying.

Also you will find a fairly high brain cell count at most Premier League grounds - tickets can be v. pricey and many many fans have been priced out of the game.

comingoutofmycage · 07/05/2014 13:22

aderynlas It's such a relief to know there's nothing riding on the Chelsea game.....the emotional rollercoaster I've been on over the last couple of months has been a complete head fuck.\o/\o/\o/
