Man on my facebook reckons he needs a day off work because of emotional stress, I said he should have one if he needs it and asked the reason why.

He said the footy results.

he is being deadly serious and saying he's suffering from 'football related sadness' and that he feels so alone and upset, he is crying.

Now I fully understand mental illness having suffered/suffering from it myself... but really?

Maybe a sign of something underlying you may say but I've known him for a good few years and football really does seem to get him down when his team loses!

Anyone else glad they don't have a partner who is obsessed with the football?!

I live with three very passionate Wigan fans. We have had a lot of highs and lows and basically, a hell of a lot of fun watching them over the years.

I'm not so clingy that I don't mind DH and the boys going out for the afternoon 20 times a year. I have been known to tag along as well on the occasional glamorous away trip or European fixture (shameless glory seeker).

Of course the odd person takes things too far, as with everything in life. But for most it's harmless fun.

JonesRipley · 06/05/2014 15:52

I understand lots of women like football. Perhaps I didn't make it very clear in my post, quoted above that I was speaking about my own personal experience and observation of men who put football before their families

DadOnIce · 06/05/2014 15:57

A friend of mine has a DS who plays in a primary school football team which regularly gets hammered 3-0 and worse. I reckon he is due a month or so off, by this logic.

Can people who are fans of "Star Wars" have some time off for the emotional stress of "The Phantom Menace"? I know it was 14 years ago, but for some it has taken that long to get over.

Next there will be people wanting time off because Hayley or whatever her name is died in "Coronation Street".

JonesRipley · 06/05/2014 16:01

I mourned when ER ended

Jjou · 06/05/2014 16:03

But the majority of people would never take the day off due to the football results - I'm sure it would be a disciplinary matter if you actually phoned in sick and gave that as the reason.

But yep, I'm bummed out today. I think of LFC conceding 3 goals in the last 12 mins of the game last night and handing City the title and my gut does a little wrench. But that's it, I've had an otherwise productive day. My fellow Reds in the office and I have bemoaned our shocking defending and general collapse, had a bit of banter and then gone about our work.

It's easy to reduce anything down to the absolute minimum to make it seem ridiculous: "oh it's only a bunch of men kicking a ball around, who cares?" " oh it's only 2 people whacking a little yellow ball over a net at each other, who cares?" "oh it's only words on a page, it's not real life is it? Why would you be moved by a novel?" etc. etc.

The Old Firm matches led to horrendous outbursts of drunken hooliganism and domestic violence.

There must have been many Glaswegians, male as well as female, who were delighted when Rangers were relegated three divisions so there would be no more OF matches until 2015 at least, unless the Cup draw went wrong.

I don't give a damn about football but I have to hope that Rangers do not get promoted again next season.

(I also think they should have been put into liquidation and their ground sold for development to pay their debts, and that HMRC treat football clubs with kid gloves and it should stop, but that is another issue!)

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2014 16:07

No of course Jjou you're right. Takinga day off ould be silly. Feeling sad about it is not

FWIW as a supporter of a non-Premiership team I was rooting for Liverpool this season. Sadly it looks like it was not meant to be

EverythingsDozy · 06/05/2014 16:07

Jean, I am going to be looking at everyone now thinking "ooh I wonder if she's on MN!"

Tinkly - the manager of Wigan FC stole my popcorn when he used to play for city and I was a junior blue! My claim to fame Grin

DadOnIce · 06/05/2014 16:07

Excellent football sketch from Mitchell & Webb.

deepinthewoods · 06/05/2014 16:09

My OH and 16 yrd old DS have no interest in football whatsoever.

Bliss,

"Off topic I am always amazed at the different ages/sexes who watch snooker. If you look at the audience it's really mixed."

yy thebody My Dad and I were on tenterhooks watching the Snooker World Championships in the early 80's. Some little girls fantasise about ponies and Barbies, I used to pretend I was Hurricane Higgins, with a piece of white chalk standing in for a fag.

JonesRipley · 06/05/2014 16:14

Dad

I love that one

JeanSeberg · 06/05/2014 16:15

Same here NotNow - I bet you know all the words to Snooker Loopy too, don't you!

IfNotNowThenWhen · 06/05/2014 16:18

I might...

JonesRipley · 06/05/2014 16:18

"I admit ... I can't understand how you can claim some deep attachment to a bunch of overpaid, hired hands from all four corners of the globe who temporarily wear the same coloured shirt as you're currently wearing"

JeanSeberg · 06/05/2014 16:19

Ha ha, it's the only reason I know the order of the balls.

AlpacaLypse · 06/05/2014 16:22

Some years ago wasn't there a dreadful case of FRS at half time in the Champions League final? An armchair fan was so upset that his team were 3-0 down that he hanged himself.

They went on to win 3-4.

I understood the team was Liverpool.

Is this an urban myth or a real memory of mine?

Musetta · 06/05/2014 16:24

Its pathetic-grown men and football but I may be bu as still have the rage from dh fucking off to seville leaving me with a small baby, not phoning and almost missing the flight home because he was so out of his faceAngry

weebarra · 06/05/2014 16:24

Andrewofgg - totally, and as a non old Firm fan I also hope they are not promoted next season. My DF and I made a conscious decision years ago to stay away from both Ibrox and Parkhead. In 25 years of footie, they are the only grounds where I've ever felt unsafe.

WhateverLover · 06/05/2014 16:25

Being a Portsmouth family we know all about FRS. Luckily this season is now over with little drama although we would have liked LFC to win. I do enjoy the tears over it though!

MyrtleDove · 06/05/2014 16:30

I am not a football fan or any kind of sports fan, though I enjoyed watching the Olympics.

However, the similarities between sport and theatre are obvious - Super Saturday during the Olympics springs to mind - and I find the sneering at football fans to be in very poor taste. I don't see a difference between me crying at Doctor Who for example, and someone crying at football. We're all emotionally affected by different things.

Jjou · 06/05/2014 16:36

Er, Liverpool didn't win 4-3 in the Champions League final in 2005. We drew the game 3-3 and won on penalties. It took a massive amount of belief to face the 2nd half when we were 3-0 down against one of the best teams in the world (AC Milan) but I don't recall ever reading of anyone hanging themselves. A few muppets walked out of the stadium at half time though Smile

JonesRipley · 06/05/2014 16:36

Myrtle

I think the meeja has a lot to do with how I feel about football. The expectation that we should be interested to the degree that a change of football manager is the LEAD item on BBC news makes me want to reject the whole idea.

I also dislike the pressure on little boys to play and like football, especially when many footballers and managers are such poor role models.

But I do understand that at the root of it is a good game

CPtart · 06/05/2014 16:46

DH is a Man City fan. There was a lot of whooping and hollering after the Liverpool match last night.
He is seriously in a dilemma though because the last match of the season is on at the same time as DS2 (8) playing in a cup final.

Goldmandra · 06/05/2014 16:47

I bet you know all the words to Snooker Loopy too, don't you!

Thanks a bunch!

That will be in my head for bloody weeks now Angry
