In the event of Scottish independence, the Scottish economy will be in the toilet. In this event, Britain should not be allowed to become a magnet for Scottish economic migrants.

I wouldn't blame Cameron if the Scots choose independence; the Tory party don't exactly have a strong foothold in those parts. However, I will certainly excoriate him if he gives an inch in any negotiations in the event of independence - especially if he allows large scale unskilled immigration from Scotland into Britain.

An independent Scotland would have almost zero negotiating power and Britain should exploit that to maximise our own advantage.

I should point out of course that Scotland would not be a member of the EU. So we should apply the same criteria that we do to other rest-of-world countries - only highly skilled Scottish migrants should be allowed in.

If we still have British passports, we are entitled to live in Britain. Independence would only begin in March '16, so in the interim there's little that can be done.

Dawndonnaagain We already have too much unskilled migration into the UK. It puts undue pressure on public services and housing. I want unlimited high skilled migration, with zero unskilled migration.

Adding a new source of large-scale unskilled migration would be madness, whatever the historical ties. Britain should seek to minimise the damage if the Scottish people choose to leave the UK.

Who knows what the Scottish economy will be like 10 years down the line? I think we can be quite confident it won't exactly be soaring in the immediate aftermath of an independence vote, however.
