to believe the remaining UK should not make special exceptions for Scottish economic refugees?

In the event of Scottish independence, the Scottish economy will be in the toilet. In this event, Britain should not be allowed to become a magnet for Scottish economic migrants.

I wouldn't blame Cameron if the Scots choose independence; the Tory party don't exactly have a strong foothold in those parts. However, I will certainly excoriate him if he gives an inch in any negotiations in the event of independence - especially if he allows large scale unskilled immigration from Scotland into Britain.

An independent Scotland would have almost zero negotiating power and Britain should exploit that to maximise our own advantage.

I should point out of course that Scotland would not be a member of the EU. So we should apply the same criteria that we do to other rest-of-world countries - only highly skilled Scottish migrants should be allowed in.

This will not go well.

PeachandRaspberry · 21/04/2014 22:16

Depends on passports, doesn't it?

If we still have British passports, we are entitled to live in Britain. Independence would only begin in March '16, so in the interim there's little that can be done.

I'm seriously considering leaving Scotland if there's a yes vote, fwiw.

PeachandRaspberry · 21/04/2014 22:16

This will not go well.

this.

Taz1212 · 21/04/2014 22:17

Will you take pensioners? DH and I have been planning on retiring to St Annes forever- certainly longer than this independence nonsense has been going on. Wink

TartanRug · 21/04/2014 22:17

Oh ffs you dont even know how the vote is going to go, this is just shit stirring.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 21/04/2014 22:17

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

You're about three weeks too late for April Fool's Day. Grin

And astonishingly ill-informed, are you Johan Lamont?

rinabean · 21/04/2014 22:18

Toilet magnet exploitation.

Dawndonnaagain · 21/04/2014 22:19

OP is known for goady posts.

longfingernails · 21/04/2014 22:21

ClothesFlowingInTheWind Yes, the interim period would be difficult. I would expect emergency legislation in the days following independence creating Scottish travel documents for Scottish residents who currently have British passports.

Taz1212 Not unless you fulfil the same criteria as non-EU pensioners from the rest of the world.

Ponkypink · 21/04/2014 22:22

Get to fuck.

(I don't support independence btw).

PeachandRaspberry · 21/04/2014 22:22

Yeah I can see that now dawndonna! Wheesh....

Tinkerball · 21/04/2014 22:24

And you can see into the future then regarding the economy? No wonder some Scots want to vote yes.

HuntforeggsinmyTerrortree · 21/04/2014 22:24

Ah but they'll still be our cousins and not our in-laws so telling all Scots to take a running jump is akin to eloping to Greta Green, oh hang on...

caroldecker · 21/04/2014 22:26

If they have british passports, they have the right to live in England, independence will not change that

longfingernails · 21/04/2014 22:26

Dawndonnaagain We already have too much unskilled migration into the UK. It puts undue pressure on public services and housing. I want unlimited high skilled migration, with zero unskilled migration.

Adding a new source of large-scale unskilled migration would be madness, whatever the historical ties. Britain should seek to minimise the damage if the Scottish people choose to leave the UK.

OP posts:
PeachandRaspberry · 21/04/2014 22:27

I want the Euromillions numbers, if you could predict them too please?

longfingernails · 21/04/2014 22:32

Who knows what the Scottish economy will be like 10 years down the line? I think we can be quite confident it won't exactly be soaring in the immediate aftermath of an independence vote, however.

You, Kelvin MacKenzie and the coalition government would be 3 good reasons to go for a yes vote OP.

Bored this evening?

MintChocAddict · 21/04/2014 22:39

And what ComposHat said. Grin

PeachandRaspberry · 21/04/2014 22:39

3/10

longfingernails · 21/04/2014 22:39

ComposHat Nice reasoned debate. How wonderful.

Could you please explain how the remaining UK could accommodate the large migration flow which would undoubtable ensue if it is not planned for and prevented by law? How would you fund the extra public services?
