not feeding "meat" to niece and nephew when they stay for one night

Been vegan for 9 years and never have meat in the house.

Should I be expected to provide a special meat meal for a 3 and 7 yo when they stay over? Rather than just what I would eat, they would be getting a balanced diet and 10+ fruit veg portions.

Brother in law has kind of suggested it would be unhealthy not to have meat for 24 hours...

Home made Falafel burgers, and bean burgers are far support to a Burger King!!

Mine will happily dive into one of those with home made wedges and salad, without a mention of it having to be meat

dp of course would eat a cow a day

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/04/2014 07:03

Far superior

MrsGarvey · 24/04/2014 10:52

While there is no denying a good burger is hard to beat, decent meat and bread, never mind fresh relishes, I would not include McDonald's or Burger King in the category of "good" their burgers are awful, even my dcs wouldn't touch them.
I agree that falafels are great served with good sauces and salad in a pitta, but it's damned hard to find a good veggie burger.

The Veggy burger at BK and McDonalds used to be quite tasty. I think the BK was called the Beanburger, Im not sure if its still going. If I go into a restaurant, it seems like a waste of money to buy vegetarian.

I'm Vegan and we don't have meat in the house. DSD comes mid week for two days and eow. She is a meat eater but has to eat veggie here. She is a very fussy eater as her mum has OCD and will only eat food out of packets where we cook everything from scratch, all sauces, jam, bread everything.

3.5 years down the line and DSD still doesn't like the food here so we now have cows milk and cheese in the house when she comes. It breaks my heart to have something that caused pain and suffering to an animal in my house but we all got worn down by her just refusing to eat.

I would say for 1 day make your life easy and their life happy and go with some foods they like and are use to. Jacket potatoes, vegan pasta and sauce. Its hard if they are use to stuff from packets and you don't cook like that. I wouldn't buy baked beans I'd just make them normally as I know what's in them but no way would DSD eat home made.

Vegan cheese isn't very nice and doesn't taste the same, they probably wouldn't go for it. If they are use to proccesed food Linda Mccartney sausages go down well with DSD and she doesn't notice the difference.

Good luck, im sure you will have so much fun that food won't be an issue. Prove to your silly BIL how ignorant he is!

Seriously, I fucking love a whopper.
Won't touch maccas though.

ivykaty44 · 24/04/2014 16:06

Mrsgarvey even insects don't touch them, not even molde wants to <a class="break-all" href="//appear..mobile.aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/08/mcdonalds-hamburger-barely-changes-after-sitting-out-for-137-days.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">appear..mobile.aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/08/mcdonalds-hamburger-barely-changes-after-sitting-out-for-137-days.html

A MaccaD's is cheaper though, and to be honest I couldn't fault the food there.

I do like a nice Whopper though. The salad in it makes it taste pretty fresh too.

What I really hate is going to a nice posh-ish resteraunt and paying £5-10 for a burger, and finding the burger not as tasty as a cheap £1 burger from McDonalds.

lurkerspeaks · 24/04/2014 22:25

I have no issue with a vegan diet in principle or being fed it by my lovely vegan friend

In practice even as an adult I really really miss dairy. She now buys me some milk for cereal/drinks before I go.

When I cater for her I find it easier to start from scratch with a meal plan rather than adapting existing tried and tested favourites (eg toad in hole with veggie sausages) which is what I do for veggies if that makes sense.

Vegan is really quite a long way from my normal diet and I don't eat much meat - it is the cheese/egg/milk axis I miss if that makes sense

SuzzieScotland · 25/04/2014 10:49

All went very well.

Miso soup with sweet potatoes and brocolli was a huge hit as was rocket pesto buckwheat pasta. Best milkshake ever apparently for the banana, date and almond without any added sugar. All in all I'm feeling rather smug and managed to get 17 portions of fruit / veg into the 5 meals.

That sounds yummy!! Glad it went well and they didn't collapse due to processed meat product withdrawal Wink

ivykaty44 · 25/04/2014 11:05

please can my dad have the recipe for the miso soup and rocket pesto and buckwheat pasta Sussie

TalkinPeace · 25/04/2014 17:34

well done Suzzie

I make simple miso soup on fast days and its ever so warming

zippey · 25/04/2014 21:31

That all sounds yummy and well edible. Im not sure what miso is, but Im sure it tastes fine.

Congrats!

AlpacaYourThings · 25/04/2014 21:35

Ooh, that sounds lovely. Glad they liked it Smile

krasnayaploshad · 25/04/2014 22:19

Well done OP & YANBU but I still question your definition of portion size. I can't work out how anyone can consume 30 portions of fruit & veg a day.

Even if I could physically eat that amount, I would have diarrhoea!

OP do you mind explaining how you do it? From your typical menu, I can't see 20 - 30 portions / day?

RahRahRasputin · 26/04/2014 21:35

The NHS portion size guides are here. There is a detailed one for almost every fruit/vegetable via the second link in the grey box. They seem to vary widely. An adult portion is 80g though, so 17 portions is 1.36 kg Shock I suppose that's only about £1 if one ate it all in carrots Grin I'm rubbish at visualising things but am trying to think of it in terms of kiwis as one portion is two kiwis, so thirty four kiwis...

I've had major bowel surgery and my diet is not the most healthy, some days I eat no fruit or veg at all and I doubt I ever manage my full five a day!

Anyway, glad the weekend went smoothly and that the children liked the food. I'm sure BIL is thrilled... Grin
