Took dd to MacDonalds today. For us this is a holiday treat as we enjoy the odd burger, although dd is really just lured by the plastic tat in the happy meal TBH. She is slim and eats normally rest of time.

But, bloody hell, the people in there were beyond belief really. Makes me realize how other families actually live and why the health of the country is as it is.

Family 1- all huge, and the youngest dd (aged about 9) was definitely the fattest and not only that she was eating a full sized meal, and worst of all was wearing a full red velour lipsy tracksuit with gold embroidery!!!!!

Family 2- Two boys with their dad, all sat vacantly staring at their food and munching away. First boy opens his (supersize) fries and says "wheres the salt?" Dad doesn't say anything, just fishes in the papers on his tray and passes packet of salt to child. The chips are ALREADY covered in far too much salt, especially for kids, and if the child asks for salt this makes me think this is a regular thing for him, to cover his food in salt.

Don't these people take any responsibility for their health AT ALL?

kinky hope you're okay. To be fair to boffin. She never said this about kids.

thornrose · 13/04/2014 19:06

Kinky sorry you have to come across this shit, it's so unfair.

But there's huge differences in eating patterns and food available since the 1970s. Someone on the telly recently said that its a miracle that everyone isn't morbidly obese.

Portion sizes have increased massively. I can't finish pub meals or similar adn make most takeaways (eg curry and rice, chinese) last two meals, but many people eat it all in one go.

People eat a lot more processed food and there is hidden sugar in everything. I think that sugar is the real baddy, more so than fat.

People eat out so much more than 20/30 years ago. It used to be limited to birthdays, and takeaways once or twice per month (usually chinese or fish and chips where I am). I remember a Trivial Pursuit question in the late 70s/early 80s that was 'what is the world's biggest burger chain'. The answer of McDonalds made us all Confused as we had Never Heard of Them Shock. Costa Coffee etc did not exist.

I had a normal, average childhood and things like fizzy pop, crisps and sweets were consumed at rates that were tiny compared to people today. We only had fizzy pop at Christmas Shock and we got it from the milkman. We had a 10 p mix (10 small penny sweets) a few times per week. Now people eat big bags of sweets/chocolates and drink fizzy pop on a daily basis.

And that's before you get onto the reduction in activity levels due to increased reliance on the car and more office jobs compared to heavy manual labour. Some of this is outside people's control and some is shear laziness (many people drive 1/2 miles to work, when previously they would have walked/cycled).

I know Miss, but there are lots of reasons people end up like that and I'll bet not one of them wished it on themselves. I think a kinder society might make people feel more supported to make positive changes, rather than one that judges all if the time.

Thanks thorn and to others with kind words. I only commented on this thread to try and remind that we don't know what goes on under the surface and, frankly, there but for the grace of god go I.

KinkyDorito · 13/04/2014 19:12

should have said Thanks to Miss too.

HoneyDragonDoesNotGiveAShit · 13/04/2014 19:14

I do stand by my convictions. I don't think its brave to be so vile about someone's child and the child's attire. And I'd like to think the majority of people ANYWHERE, would find that disgusting.

If that makes me pc, the thought police, deluded than so be it.

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2014 19:14

FWIW I don't think the obesity crisis is down to any one single thing.I think it's a mixture of...

Sedentary lives (particularly since the introduction of the internet/xbox/playstation etc).

Massive boom in takeaways and delivery option.

Far less children playing in the streets nowadays.

Poverty.

Supermarkets taking over the high streets.

People who would rather drive than walk a mile or so.

These things all seemed to come about at once from the late 70's onwards and there's been a steady rise in obesity ever since.

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 19:14

They don't know, Kinky. That's the whole point isn't it.

And even if the whole family is overweight purely because they eat too much that doesn't make them subhuman. Fair game for ridicule because, you know, the fatties' feelings don't matter do they. They brought it on themselves.

None of the rest of us have any vices after all do we?

Thanks for you and your beautiful DD

fairnotfair · 13/04/2014 19:15

Sorry, Misspixie.

Shame there isn't a [cucumber emoticon]. Which is probably a good thing round here.

Can I substitute crudities for crudités? Grin

Sirzy · 13/04/2014 19:16

I agree Worra, and then there is the way so many products are made and marketed to make them seem appealing (or even worse seem healthy when they aren't)

Its certainly not a simple problem so there isn't going to be a simple solution.

ilovesooty · 13/04/2014 19:21

Oh come on Migsy, only a coward name changes to 'go against the flow'.No-one's going to type them to death. If you have an opinion you might as well own it, rather than changing NNs to goad and then slipping back into a usual name to be all sweetness and light again

Exactly.

Migsy1 · 13/04/2014 19:22

Who says they should have thought police?

The people reporting the thread.

Anyway, its been good entertainment hasn't it? 593 messages so far.

Misspixietrix · 13/04/2014 19:28

If the people that disagree (rightly so) that taking the Mick out of a kid is okay are the thought police what does that make the posters who are complaining about the thread being reported? The thought police police?

ilovesooty · 13/04/2014 19:29

I reported it because I was hoping (obviously in error) that MNHQ might look again at their NC policy and because I really don't want to engage with people under their normal, presumably pleasant usernames who can post sneering shit like this, especially about a child.

I suppose, Migsy it depends what you call entertainment.

HoneyDragonDoesNotGiveAShit · 13/04/2014 19:32

MNHQ like, love and indeed live for reports. Reports make them happy.

You are not the thought police if you press the report button.

MNHQ are the the Thought MI5

It would be reasonable enough to hit the report button as the opening post is merrily teetering on the line between the right to anonymity and good old fashioned trolling.

HoneyDragonDoesNotGiveAShit · 13/04/2014 19:33

Are Not the though MI5

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 19:35

They certainly do Honey. (Although maybe not today!)

I don't think the OP of this is teetering anymore though. Maybe at the beginning they were teetering, but the laughing at the child bit pushed them firmly over the edge.

Migsy1 · 13/04/2014 19:36

If the people that disagree (rightly so) that taking the Mick out of a kid is okay are the thought police what does that make the posters who are complaining about the thread being reported? The thought police police?

I'm making an observation not a report - I'm not asking for posts or threads to be deleted.

Misspixietrix · 13/04/2014 19:37

And see your post go poof in 3 2 1 for troll calling Honey...

Misspixietrix · 13/04/2014 19:45

But everything else on here is okay mind Confused.
