to think the hatred for Next is just backlash against the popular and successful?

I don't get it, they stock such a wide range of products and styles how can everyone on here hate them? Whatever you find in other shops, you can generally find in Next too.

It's just bandwagonning isn't it? It's popular so it's cool to say you hate them isn't it?

In my eyes, if I want nice kids clothes Next has it- from cute and girly, to hooker style, to nautical, to traditional, whatever you want they have it!

They have women's stuff in formal, casual, tarty, frumpy, maternity, everything under the sun.

I shop in loads of places, including Next, but all the Next hatred puzzles me.

I have stopped going there for me as the quality has been so poor.

Behonest25 · 10/04/2014 02:00

I find it very run of the mill.

I bought a pair of trousers there several years ago. After a few washes they were baggy around the hips and crotch. They looked utterly shapeless like most of their clothes.

Great for children but not adults.

SunnySon · 10/04/2014 02:27

People hate next..?? I love the children's clothes. Plus they're the only decent shop that delivers to where I live (free too).

MexicanSpringtime · 10/04/2014 03:40

Reads like an Ad Campaign for Next, this. Well done Next, give this lady a rise!

PunkrockerGirl · 10/04/2014 06:10

Each to their own I suppose. I quite like Next. Hate Debenhams - overpriced tat.

littlewhitebag · 10/04/2014 06:14

I used to like it but I now have no idea what age group they are trying to cater for. I think they have lost their way a bit. My DD's in their teens and twenties don't shop there and neither do I at age 51. I like their home ware though.

ParanoidLucy · 10/04/2014 06:20

I don't hate next but I generally find their shops are filled with naff tat with the occassional nice thing. Same as m and s andv many other high street stores. The children's clothes are nice but over priced. I can't say I have ever gone for the hooker look for my kids though.Grin I assume you meant something else.

I hate next.

But that's because I have to deliver their tat. They are a crucial part to Hermes' business model, by pretending to be a separate provider of work, and making us jump through ridiculous hoops to prove this, then they claim that we are self employed and avoid all employment regulation and rights.

In some areas, they have not raised pay rates for 20 years. We get no sick or holiday rights, and always have to provide someone else to do the work. A friend was ill, and because it took him 2.5 hours to sort a replacement, he was sacked that day.

The latest, is that next are demanding a sunday service by 1st June. They are offering truly shit money for this, and are surprised that a huge proportion of us don't want to work 7 days a week. It's starting to get nasty now, long serving couriers are being pushed out of the door (with no redress) to get new people in. I am certain that these people are working on the side of benefits, and have no adequate insurance, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to work for the money they're offering, and turn a profit.

They deliberately make our lives difficult. Next offer am/pm/mid slots in many areas. If you attempt a pm early, and the customer is in, you will fail the criteria, even though it has been signed for. You get a phone call to say you've failed, lose your bonus and get a warning. Customers regularly say they've not requested time slots especially if they have nominated a safe place for it to be left. If you query this the stock answer from next is 'we pay you enough, we chose the times'.

I expect people to jump on me, and say how shit courier services are, and I'm not surprised. The service is so regularly in the shit in badly paid areas that they refuse to review, that they literally have anyone in off the street to clear the backlog, and then get rid of them a few days later.

This rant is mainly about hermes, not next, but without next they would not be able to sidestep all the employment laws.

Ilovexmastime · 10/04/2014 07:35

I didn't know everyone hated Next, I thought it was just me :)

Only joking, I don't hate them, I'm just indifferent to them. When I was in my 20s I wouldn't have been seen dead wearing anything from Next because to me it was the epitome of mumsy. Now I am a mum it just wouldn't occur to me to go in there as I still have that feeling that their clothes are boring. I don't know if this is true or not though.

londonrach · 10/04/2014 07:40

I didn't realise there was a backlase. I don't shop there but that's because I never used to like anything, it didn't fit and I hated their sale when they bring stuff in to sale at 50% off. Haven't been in the doors for ten years plus now. Maybe I should visit.

BumPotato · 10/04/2014 07:42

One of the reasons I don't usually buy in next is that most of their things are instantly recognisable as next. If you are wearing something by next, chances are you'll come across someone else wearing the exact same thing.

I prefer H&M for my kids' casual clothes. I buy my basic vests from Primark, and M&S for the kids.

I do buy their everyday slim jeans, as they fit and are pretty cheap at £26.

If I'm buying a child a onesie as a gift, I'll get it from next, along with a gift receipt.

I don't particularly like their house stuff, though admit to not looking at it for years.

sarahquilt · 10/04/2014 07:42

Who hates them? I like Next.

Orangeanddemons · 10/04/2014 07:46

Next used to be amazing, fantastic clothes, shoes and fabrics. The sales were something special then.

But now, ugh, I can't remember the last time I bought anything in there. Dull, drab and polyester. I really dislike their stuff. Sometimes I go in and marvel how far they've sunk since their heyday.

I also think the girls wear is trashy and cheap looking. I won't be buying limp viscose dresses in shit brown for my dd. Last winter was hideous for girls wear.

Orangeanddemons · 10/04/2014 07:47

I think Next charge high prices for Matalan style and quality. Except Matalan is often better

RedFocus · 10/04/2014 07:51

The men's range is actually surprisingly good and my dh will happily shop in there.
The kids are never very good in store so I buy online.
The women's are a bit hit and miss. I buy my basics from there and some key pieces, underwear is cute so I like to spend any vouchers I get on underwear & sleep wear. They've got some nice shoes and boots at the moment so I've ordered some flats for summer. I'm not exclusively buying from next but they do ok out of me Wink

cosikitty · 10/04/2014 07:54

See, I still don't get it, all these posts saying their clothes are boring and mumsy, compared to what? I just searched dresses and they have well over 200 of them for women, in almost any style yo can think of. If you want natural fabrics only, like you all seem to profess to exclusively wear, or better quality, then you have to pay a LOT more. I'm not saying I love Next any more than any other shop (Great plains is my fave) but every time I see it mentioned loads of people jump up and say - Next is rubbish, old fashioned, poor quality, etc etc. Compared to what? (especially thinking of women in 30s/40s like myself)

OP posts:
kilmuir · 10/04/2014 07:57

The quality has gone down.

Grennie · 10/04/2014 07:57

I used to love Next. Now I struggle to find women's clothes in there I like.

Grennie · 10/04/2014 07:58

cosikitty - The quality is comparable to supermarkets. Supermarkets are much cheaper.

Sirzy · 10/04/2014 08:00

See matalan I think is awful product and quality wise.

I have never had issues with the quality from next. Things I had lasted for years (good enough to go to the charity shop when I lost too much weight to wear them) and we have children's clothes which have done 3 children and still good enough to be on standby for a 4th if a boy.

cosikitty · 10/04/2014 08:01

I don't think it is, never seen anything in my Tesco's that looked much like the dresses in Next.

OP posts:
yegodsandlittlefishes · 10/04/2014 08:02

When I was a size 14-18 I couldn't find anything to fit me in next which was good quality and looked good. M&S and Gap or H&M, White Stuff, BHS or Debenhams were all better for me. Now, as a (petite) size 8-12 I have some beautifully tailored Next fitted work trousers, jeans that don't look frumpy and even the odd dress. The trouble is, they only look good on me when I am a size 8-10.

cosikitty · 10/04/2014 08:02

And Matalan are ok if you choose from their better ranges, but the shoes are even more shit than Next's, and the lower end ranges are akin to stuff from a cheap market stall.
