to think the hatred for Next is just backlash against the popular and successful?

I don't get it, they stock such a wide range of products and styles how can everyone on here hate them? Whatever you find in other shops, you can generally find in Next too.

It's just bandwagonning isn't it? It's popular so it's cool to say you hate them isn't it?

In my eyes, if I want nice kids clothes Next has it- from cute and girly, to hooker style, to nautical, to traditional, whatever you want they have it!

They have women's stuff in formal, casual, tarty, frumpy, maternity, everything under the sun.

I shop in loads of places, including Next, but all the Next hatred puzzles me.

I hate Next. I hate them because I was reduced to tears by a horrible assistant manager at the High Street Ken store in 2007 and their customer services were useless. So no, not because they are "popular and successful" but because of horrendous and unnecessary unpleasant behaviour by a member of their staff and a failure to do anything about it.

Eventually the Covent Garden store sorted out a replacement for the damaged goods they sold me.

I have never been back since because I don't trust their customer service to be of a reasonable standard and applied fairly and consistently. Not even for hooker style clothes for kids Hmm

SauceForTheGander · 09/04/2014 22:55

I was indifferent to them until I read they were the place to go if you wanted to dress your DD like a hooker and now I hate them.

ouryve · 09/04/2014 22:56

He never sees anything he likes in there. He also finds shopping in busy shops stressful, as he has ASD. It's easier to snuggle on the sofa and choose things online, then try on at leisure.

We've had some lovely things from Sainsburys, but only tops, and the quality is very hit and miss.

The best quality we've had has been from landsend, but again, not in trousers. Next appear to have that cornered. Particularly when we can get 3 or 4 different colours of skinny jeans for £8 each in the VIP sale!

soontobeslendergirl · 09/04/2014 22:58

ouryve - H&M online? - tends to be cheap and quality again varys.

GreenLandsOfHome · 09/04/2014 22:59

I don't feel strongly enough to say I hate them, but I don't shop there. The clothes are boring and expensive for what they are IMO.

Sparklysilversequins · 09/04/2014 22:59

Next do good jeans and leggings and, I always go there for those. Then the occasional nice top which you'll see loads of others wearing and recognise instantly and some really lovely girls dresses. Great character t-shirts for boys too, but cool, like Lego and Batman and some retro stuff. It's not a Must Go To shop for me though, not sure why.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 09/04/2014 23:01

I just think it's a bit dull. I don't like all the polyester either.

I've got a couple of bits, and I remember thinking I've reached that age where I shop in Next!

Their kids clothes go through phases of being nice. I don't like their summer stuff for boys currently

I look around but just feel a bit 'meh' about it.

WanderingAway · 09/04/2014 23:01

What i hate about next is how they change their clothes every month. Its a blooming nightmare not just for the employees but for the customers too.

I love their kids clothes. What would you class as hooker style? To me it would be padded bras for 5 year olds and clothes with 'porn star' on them and next dont sell either of those.

What i also hate about next is their sales. Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to have a boxing day sale starting at 5am?! Just shows that they dont care about their employees.

JohnCusacksWife · 09/04/2014 23:02

Love their denim and some (but only some of their women's basics). Like their baby stuff but their girls stuff is vile....who wants an 8 yr old dressed like a 15 yr old?? They really need to sort that out. Plus make it easier to buy online without getting a credit account. It can be done but they don't publicise it and that pisses me off.

goingmadinthecountry · 09/04/2014 23:07

Kids' clothes are in vile colours. If only they'd stop designing a couple of stages earlier, they might come out with something half decent, if it wasn't poly easter and a vile harsh shade.

Womenswear is dull and made of poor quality fabric. Used to be a bit more exciting but so dull, no expectations office wear. I say this at 50, would buy nothing now though had lots in 80s/90s.

cat88 · 09/04/2014 23:07

love some of their clothes and their recent baby clothes are not all pink or blue at last babies are allowed to have a variety of colours. That said hate the way you buy online have to open an account. Only at the very end do they tell you somethings will be another 6 weeks before being delivered. At which point you know it will be even more reduced in store and you will probably have forgotten ordering it and have a huge hassle should it not be delivered...Hmm

themadcaplass · 09/04/2014 23:08

KoalaFace If the stuff they have is anything like it was when I worked there, then sadly, yes they do. Teeny denim hotpants and the like Hmm

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:12

Wow.

I clicked on this purely to find out how a thread about Next included the words 'popular' and 'successful'. My granny died in 2008 and at 84 she was about the right target market for most of their stuff and a bit too young for some of it.

Granted their kids clothes may be lovely, I wouldn't know. But I don't really imagine that the over 70 brigade waste their time on backlashes against the popular.

lollerskates · 09/04/2014 23:12

The clothes aren't very nice, are they? The Next sale is hilarious. Imagine waking up at 2am on boxing day to blow all your money on pinstripe polyester.

Where do you shop LRD?

OP posts:
FrumiousBandersnatch · 09/04/2014 23:19

I have never ever understood the hysteria over the next sale every Christmas.

I never find anything for myself in there ( although I am going to investigate the relaxed skinny jeans as recommended on mn) but have found some nice baby bits for DD which enabled me to use ancient gift cards - they do great three-packs of babygros.

HOWEVER, as per pp I bought a curtain rail online and was properly horrified when I received a letter telling me that I now had an account with a £1000 credit limit. Unbelievably irresponsible, but they were entirely nonplussed when I rang to cancel and complain.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:20

The least popular and successful places I can find, mostly! And mostly on the net.

I'm sorry, I realize my post was not flattering, but surely Next know no-one shops there because it's trendy?

WisneaMe · 09/04/2014 23:21

I like next but whenever iv purposefully went In to buy stuff for my dd it's all seemed a bit old for her age or navy and beige colours which is dull for a toddler and not her colours.
The ladies wear is a bit old for me early 20s but buying basic odds and ends is ok.

cosikitty · 09/04/2014 23:23

Would love to know what you all wear that is so exciting if Next is boring?
Anyone willing to show us?

libertytrainers · 09/04/2014 23:28

esprit (free delivery and returns), zara, french connection, mango, warehouse, gap - loads of cheaper brands that are better than next

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:28

I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to offend you and I shouldn't have posted. I was just thinking out loud. It's not my cup of tea, is all.

I buy bits from French Connection, Karen Millen, Aspire (local shop, I think?), Eucalpytus (ditto), ASOS which is online, Vanity Project which is online, cardies in the sale at Hobbs or Jigsaw. I don't think any of it is exciting and I think probably if you want exciting, you need to ask people who're not clicking on a link talking about Next! But if you want decent basics, I do have to say I wouldn't be seen dead in Next. If it works for you, for goodness' sake, go for it ... but I'll believe it's 'popular' when I hear someone not anonymous admit they buy clothes there.

libertytrainers · 09/04/2014 23:31

why on earth shouldn't you have posted?? do next sponsor mn now? Wink

whois · 09/04/2014 23:31

I like next. Pick carefully and you can get some quite nice work stuff there.
