to think the hatred for Next is just backlash against the popular and successful?

I don't get it, they stock such a wide range of products and styles how can everyone on here hate them? Whatever you find in other shops, you can generally find in Next too.

It's just bandwagonning isn't it? It's popular so it's cool to say you hate them isn't it?

In my eyes, if I want nice kids clothes Next has it- from cute and girly, to hooker style, to nautical, to traditional, whatever you want they have it!

They have women's stuff in formal, casual, tarty, frumpy, maternity, everything under the sun.

I shop in loads of places, including Next, but all the Next hatred puzzles me.

Why do you love Next so much you weirdo?

cosikitty · 09/04/2014 23:33

We'll it must be popular as they wouldn't be able to have soooo many branches and turn over a profit it nobody bought there. I buy from similar places as you LRD, not offended, just curious, but also have few things from Next, don't see it as much different to anywhere else or much worse than French connection etc, certainly not to he worried about been seen in.

libertytrainers · 09/04/2014 23:37

popular doesn't equal good though does it, look at simon cowell Wink

french connection etc are alot better made than next

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:37

I probably need to check it out, then!

I have heard people on here say the jeans are surprisingly good, and I did try but they didn't fit me.

I think in general, shops aimed at the older market do tend to do better, because in this recession, older people have coped better. That's all it is, and it's not a criticism. God knows I think some shops aimed at younger people could do with upping their game! And I wish there more were decent mid-rank shops for people who're over 25 but not ready for Next stuff yet.

DomesticSlobbess · 09/04/2014 23:37

I like their homeware even though it's quite expensive compared to similar stuff in Ikea or even on Asda Direct.

Never bought clothes from there. I get most of DS' clothes from H&M.

Popped in there a little while ago and was surprised to see a few nice shirts and some of the knitwear was nice, because it's usually quite frumpy in there, but if I'm buying from the high street I much prefer Topshop.

cosikitty · 09/04/2014 23:38

Yeah, but a lot more expensive too!

BrokenToeOuch · 09/04/2014 23:38

I buy stuff for the dc from there.
Wouldn't buy any of the women's stuff for me though, it's all frumpy imo. Dp wouldn't wear next either, he's a big bloke and cheap clothes look terrible on his large frame.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:40

I think my issue with the clothing is that they are made for people with very boyish figures. I am often a 12/14 but I am a 10 there, and the hips are still huge. That would be fine if I were slim and gorgeous, but sadly, on me, it just makes me feel silly! And I do think this may be to do with their target market, because as I understand it, we are getting more and more hourglass-y, so if they are catering to older women they will be right to keep to a fairly straight up-and-down figure.

DomesticSlobbess · 09/04/2014 23:40

More expensive sometimes but more my taste. So would rather pay a bit extra for something I love from Topshop than something that's just "nice" in Next.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:42
Confused

Who is more expensive?

Jeans at ASOS are cheaper than Next.

libertytrainers · 09/04/2014 23:42

blimey if you like it just buy it but don't expect others to agree that it's bandwaggonning (sic) to disagree that it's tat

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/04/2014 23:43

some of their stuff is shite, but some is wonderful. much like any other shop....
you just select what you like and leave what you dont...dont you?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/04/2014 23:45

Plus, I don't know if it's just me, but all their jeans give me this nappy-effect behind.

I avoid them because they may look on when I try them on, but the one time I bought some (and I blame MN), they started sagging like a nappy after the first wash. Confused

hertsmum10 · 09/04/2014 23:46

I don't hate them but quality is not what it used be my next coat bought end of December is really tatty! and a friend who also got the same coat said the same thing, It lasted less than 12wks not what I would expect from next

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 09/04/2014 23:49

What an odd thread Hmm Hmm Hmm - something that is very popular and successful also tends to be bland and appeal to the lowest common denominator - so why shouldn't we hate on it if we choose? Good taste isn't judged by a popularity contest.

I think Next women's clothes are boring as hell. When I was 20 I used to think "I'll be old enough to wear them when I'm 30." I'm now 40 and I still think I'm too young.

The kids clothes are really gendered and the boys stuff is muddy coloured (with some exceptions) and overdesigned - all that appliqué and stitching and pockets. Plus they are really baggy and I have a very slim DS.

The furniture and homewares are overpriced and dreary.

thebody · 09/04/2014 23:51

Overpriced crap!

HollaAtMeBaby · 10/04/2014 00:02

Next stuff is just utter dross. Middle class, mid-market, middle of the road, boring, derivative, watered down, mumsy, provincial crap, distilling the very worst of English (non-)style. As for the gimlet-eyed lower middles and mercenary chavs who get up at 4 a.m. to queue/fight for this shite at sale time, especially on Boxing Day when they could be relaxing at home with people they care about, and think they're participating in some kind of exciting event... it depresses me beyond belief that such pathetic people exist at all, let alone in great enough numbers to create a market for shops across the UK to open at 6 a.m. and require crowd control to boot.

Does that clarify, cosikitty?

In case you're interested, I shop at most British high street shops from Primark to Whistles/Reiss, but I get most of my clothes from outlets, sample sales, and outside the UK.

magentastardust · 10/04/2014 00:04

I like it for the dc's school uniform and have had some really cute summer dresses and party outfits for the girls over the years and ds when he was younger.
I used to get quite a bit for myself but haven't for a couple of years now as just don't really see much I like.

Still would buy Jeans, Ballet pumps and accessories like clutch bags from them.

I have noticed the decrease in quality in the last few years , used to buy all the kids socks there -thick , cotton lasted for ages-recent ones so much thinner and more expensive.
Same with quality of some of the clothes and little girls pumps-so now it it makes more sense for me to buy things like socks and tights and pyjamas elsewhere as same or better quality but a good few pounds cheaper.

Can you buy online without an account -I tried recently and couldn't see where too. I don't want to re open an account with them but it is so much handier be able to order online.

BillyBanter · 10/04/2014 00:14

Partly what I dislike about Next is some people seem to be in thrall to it and I can't see why. It's really nothing special.

Also I'm not sure what this amazing range is. It's all pretty samey and uninspiring.

I've bought jeans there, because I buy what fits and theirs fit.

Kids stuff used to be good about 5 years ago when I could have bought the whole shop, not so much now. Also the quality went down while prices remained the same.

ProcessYellowC · 10/04/2014 00:25

Still stuck on the hooker style for kids. Is this really a styleConfused? Or is it a reference to rugby tops?

I always found the cut of the hips in Next womenswear wrong for me, haven't been there in years.

TOADfan · 10/04/2014 00:34

They dont do plus size and I dont have a home so homeware wouldnt get me in. Dont think I have ever bought a thing for next or gone in more than twice.
George st Asda all the way.

FuckyNell · 10/04/2014 00:51

I like the kids clothes. I don't like the polyester ladies clothes though.

FuckyNell · 10/04/2014 00:52

I like that I can order at 9.30 pm and receive them next day too.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/04/2014 01:11

I go into Next wanting to spend money. Can never find anything I like - for any of us. I find maybe, one thing I'm happy for dd to wear, maybe the odd t shirt for the ds's. They're quite good for dh's shirts but that's about it. Always disappointed. I have had a couple of pairs of boots from them I'm happy with. I did get a great pair of jeans from them I loved and wished I'd bought several pairs - but that was about 12 years ago- they've completely worn through now.

Rabbitcar · 10/04/2014 01:25

Really really don't like it. Too much polyester and too much unnecessary embroidery and frills.
