To wonder just how much rent you people are paying?

I often see posters commenting on how much rent they are paying to live in nice areas/near good schools etc. and I can't help but wonder how much you are all paying!

I am lucky that I live in a Housing Association house, and that I live in the North where rents seem to be cheaper.

My rent is £420 a month for a 2 bedroom house - how much is yours?

Another response to the 'can afford a mortgage so why not buy' query...

Our rented house is probably worth about 400K, with a 20% deposit it'd cost us £1200-£1500 pcm on a mortgage, which we could afford. That said, we currently pay £750pcm in rent and using any extra cash to invest heavily in DH's business and anything left over is put into savings. I think we are seeing a better return on those investments than any increase in property value.

Also, I only want to live in THIS village. In the 3 years we've been here, only perhaps 1 or 2 houses have come up for sale that I would like to live in as much as this one. We'd probably struggle to get a mortgage right now anyway with us both being SE and DH's accounts only showing small profits in the previous year. Renting suits us for now Smile

I own and my mortgage is £600 a month for a 3 bed bay fronted semi. The house 3 doors up went up for rent a few weeks ago at £650.

ConfusedPixie · 09/04/2014 17:01

£700 on a one bed flat in Brighton. Below the going rate as it's actually a granny flat too :/

CuriosityCola · 09/04/2014 17:02

£1600 p/m. Large house in Edinburgh.

traininthedistance · 09/04/2014 17:04

The thing is, surely if you can afford 1400 a month on rent, your income is high enough to get a mortgage!

Where I am the 1400pcm terraced houses are around 335k to buy! A mortgage for that amount would be a lot bigger than 1400/month, or you'd need to put down a truly enormous deposit to make the mortgage repayment 1400/month.

I'm mortgaged but £625 would get you this 4 bed new build

£400 pcm mortgage 4 bed semi in SE London (although some round here would say Kent!)

WWOOWW · 09/04/2014 17:09

£550 for a good sized 3 bed semi in a nice part of North London. Also just happens to also be 50m from a sort after semi selective school.

chattychattyboomba · 09/04/2014 17:12

2600 pound per month. 3 bed terraced house SW London.

GirlsTimesThree · 09/04/2014 17:13

£1,200 for a six bedroomed farmhouse in the north.
Yes, we could buy, but we're only here for a few years and don't want to give the government a (another) wedge of stamp duty tax.

Since we've been here we've needed a £6k water filtration system put in (on a spring), the roof has been fixed and there's been at least £2k of maintenance work done. I think we've got a good deal!
We do have a flat in the SE we rent out, so not completely off the property ladder.

spidey66 · 09/04/2014 17:13

Nothing. I've cleared my mortgage (2 bed flat, zone 3, north London.)I was paying approximately 650 a month before (bought it 1995).

WandaDoff · 09/04/2014 17:14

£380 a month for a 3 bed council flat with garden in Glasgow.
On an estate/scheme but most have been privately owned round here since the 80's

Not the best area, but there are places a lot worse, not very far away.
We're close to schools & amenities, fantastic public transport links.

I am very very lucky.

Oswin · 09/04/2014 17:14

500 a month, two bed flat in a high rise in Birmingham.

OldCatLady · 09/04/2014 17:15

£1000 PCM for a small 2 bed flat in Surrey - average town, nothing special!

Oswin · 09/04/2014 17:15

Ooh forgot to mention its a council flat.

ballseditup · 09/04/2014 17:17

1200 for 1 bed flat

Could afford mortgage but hard to save deposit for a home in london

Behonest25 · 09/04/2014 17:26

Artandco Shake Shock

misog I am very curious as to which part of SE you live - I assume it is not SE London at £800 for a three bed.

BeverlyMoss · 09/04/2014 17:32

Five bed detached good area south coast, £1400 pm mortgage, rent would be a bit higher.

TheBigBumTheory · 09/04/2014 17:34

£900 mortgage large 6 bed in North West England.

Oakmaiden · 09/04/2014 17:35

£790 for a six bed, 3 reception Victorian townhouse. With original features such as butlers sink and servants bells...

I am so lucky...

elliebe13 · 09/04/2014 17:37

595 for a two bed ground floor flat in Cardiff. And that's actually good Sad

PortofinoRevisited · 09/04/2014 17:40

Roughly the equivilient of £1200 for a 4 bed town house with garden and off road parking in the suburbs of Brussels. We are 6 years in to a 9 year lease (standard thing here) Renters are much better protected, but you have to hand the place back, pretty much as you found it.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 09/04/2014 17:40

Not me, DS1 pays 330 for a room in modern shared house including all bills. He shares with two friends.

maeanne · 09/04/2014 17:43

1k pcm for a 3 bed terraced on a horribly busy (and noisy) newish estate in a nice-ish village in north Hampshire. The good local primary is it's only saving grace. I hate it here and I hate renting.

maeanne · 09/04/2014 17:46

Forgot to add, it's tiny and has the smallest garden I have ever seen (which is currently a muddy bog as it gets no sunshine).
