To wonder just how much rent you people are paying?

I often see posters commenting on how much rent they are paying to live in nice areas/near good schools etc. and I can't help but wonder how much you are all paying!

I am lucky that I live in a Housing Association house, and that I live in the North where rents seem to be cheaper.

My rent is £420 a month for a 2 bedroom house - how much is yours?

£2400 for a four bed in Surrey, moved to £850 for a five bed in the North East last year.

Cookethenook · 09/04/2014 17:49

Gosh, we need to move out of the south east!

£800 pm for 3 bedrooms and a tiny garden in East Sussex. We rent off family, and for the same thing in our area, we'd be looking at £2000pm.

It makes me want to cry!

Artandco · 09/04/2014 17:50

We can't afford mortgage where we are as our 1 bed rental £1850per/m ( we have 2 children living here also) is currently retailed at £720,000. So.. 1/5 deposit isn't exactly cheap..

bobsleighteam · 09/04/2014 17:53

£550 for a 2 bed terrace with garden but no parking. shrewsbury

specialsubject · 09/04/2014 17:55

our two-bed semi rents out for just under £500 which is the market rate in the town. Brand new bathroom, tidy kitchen, lounge, new boiler, good decoration throughout, insulated to the hilt, quiet spot near amenities (it isn't a big town!), off street parking, private garden. I'd live there - I wouldn't rent out anything to which that did not apply.

little bit tatty round the eaves (cosmetic, not functional) but will sort that in the summer. Inside is immaculate, as it should be.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/04/2014 17:55

595 for a 2 bed semi, small garden and parking.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/04/2014 17:55

in Essex

SoonToBeSix · 09/04/2014 17:57

£430 a month four bed in the North West.

YoureAShoe · 09/04/2014 17:58

We got a "good deal" and pay £950 a month for a small 2 bed ground floor maisonette with off road parking and a small garden. This is right by Heathrow. I'd love to be able to move somewhere with cheaper rent but it's just not realistic with jobs.

MoserRoth · 09/04/2014 17:58

£700 per month for 3 bed semi with front and back garden in Glasgow's West End. Council tax is £230 per month though!!! I think Glasgow's council tax is one of the highest in the UK which came as a big shock. Cannot afford to save for a mortgage, 30k debts and other half has a chronic health condition which means a mortgage will be tricky and we're both in our late 40s. We are at the mercy of the private rental market but, touch wood, are OK in our present house for another few years. After that, fuck knows!

ellenjames · 09/04/2014 18:00

Feeling very lucky at some of these prices! We pay 425 for a 3 bedroom farm cottage in the Lincolnshire Wolds, allowed pets have massive garden, and complete freedom x

ellenjames · 09/04/2014 18:03

oh and our nearest primary is outstanding which the 3 dc's attend and a grammar that is excellent. Only problem is the other local comp has gone downhill over the last couple of years, my eldest dc is year 4 so will have to see what happens if she doesn't pass the 11+.

DaPrincessBride · 09/04/2014 18:05

1100 a month for tiny 2 bed with small garden. SW London. And that is cheap!

We pay £1440 per month for a 3 bed flat in Guernsey. No way can we afford a house here. :(

Wherediparkmybroom · 09/04/2014 18:12

440pm for two bed HA terrace, south coast

bluesbaby · 09/04/2014 18:13

We pay £700 pm for a 2bed / 2reception. No garden, bad parking. Unfurnished (which I prefer anyway) but very poor decor and desperately needs renovating across the whole house. Good location though, it's still not in the posh end of town.

We don't have a 10% deposit, and at any rate, 3x our combined salary is around £145,000 ish which would get us a mortgage round here on.... a mobile home. Lovely! No offence to those of you who do live in caravans or on mobile home sites, that's just not what I want to get a mortgage for!

I'm pretty sure the banks don't even allow much leeway for how much you can borrow compared to your salary, so you have to be stinking rich round here to buy a house. Or do one of those schemes where you still pay rent on top of your mortgage. The multiples are just crap.

I think you need a combined (or solo) income of £90k to even borrow enough to buy a nice 2 bed house or a rundown 3/4 bed here.

If I wanted a cute little 3 bed cottage I'd need to earn £150k pa. It's crazy.

vrtra · 09/04/2014 18:20

370 for 1 bed flat in run down part of SE. Up side is, it has a separate kitchen, most of the places round here have a kitchen diner which is a bit grim and means less space to prep food.

down side is tiny living room and leaky walls (though landlord is good at sorting)

looking at moving to a bigger place but 2 beds are 550 for grotty ones and 600-900 for naice ones. V hard to find a spacious 1 bed for less than 525 :( I got quite lucky here, I have built in wardrobes, a separate loo and power shower over bath which is exceptional!!

hard to get even a bedsit here for less than 350

impossible to find anywhere with no damp problems. Victorian housing stock and coastal weather.

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 09/04/2014 18:21

£665 pcm roughly for a 4 bed, 2 bed and a pool in Southern Spain as we DH works in Gibraltar. The cost of living is so cheap that we are rapidly adding to our deposit from the house sale in the UK

For the same in Gib we would be looking at £2500-3000 pcm if not more. Renting is so expensive over there. I saw one place going for £8000 pcm! It is central London prices in Gibraltar easily.

DownstairsMixUp · 09/04/2014 18:22

Agree with others. Our mortgage payments wouldn't be much more on this house if we bought it (though actually, you can't mortgage our place, it's single skimmed) but we don't have enough extra to save a deposit. It is kinda depressing.

Objection · 09/04/2014 18:23

Before we bought a house last year was paying £550 for a large 3 bed semi in Leicestershire.
Huge garden and 4 car driveway.

SockQueen · 09/04/2014 18:25

£1250 per month, 2 bed flat (3rd floor, no lift!) in zone 2 SE London. This is below the local market rate as we rent direct from the owner rather than going via an agent.

Can't wait to move out of London!

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 09/04/2014 18:27

Three bed cottage in Yorkshire countryside £450

wtf1981 · 09/04/2014 18:29

Bought a house now but paid £960 last year in Beckenham, Greater London. That was very cheap for a two - bed Victorian terrace.

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2014 18:38

850 for small 2 bed terrace in Lancashire
