To wonder just how much rent you people are paying?

I often see posters commenting on how much rent they are paying to live in nice areas/near good schools etc. and I can't help but wonder how much you are all paying!

I am lucky that I live in a Housing Association house, and that I live in the North where rents seem to be cheaper.

My rent is £420 a month for a 2 bedroom house - how much is yours?

The thing is, surely if you can afford 1400 a month on rent, your income is high enough to get a mortgage!

We only rent because we don't have enough income for a mortgage.

DH and I can afford a mortgage. However when his last relationship broke down, she fucked off and left him paying for the house after stripping it bare of all the expensive stuff including his stuff the fucking bitch and the bank he was with were incredibly unhelpful. He got a buyer but they'd already started the repossession of it and wouldn't let him sell it. They then sold it for a loss. His credit rating is therefore now below zero and no bank will look twice at us.

It's not always as simple as you make out!

We pay £800pm for a small 2 bed house in a nice area in the SE.

rootypig · 09/04/2014 16:01

How are you supposed to save a £30k deposit, minimum, while paying £1400 a month? Hmm

(And when I say 4 bedroom. one of those is actually only big enough for a toddler bed, a small bookcase and that's it. It is really a cupboard with a window. Three bedroom houses are the same price in this area)

RufusTheReindeer · 09/04/2014 16:05

Small 3 bed mid terraceds in our area are going for about £850

JulietBravoJuliet · 09/04/2014 16:06

£475 for a gorgeous 2 bed house in an old mill conversion. Landlord doesn't seem to have kept up with the market value, as some of the other properties in the mill are renting for £600. But I'm not going to point this out to him Grin I'm in a little village between Derby and Notts.

kentishgirl · 09/04/2014 16:07

Kent - not very nice town, not the worst, but not a 'naice' one either. £625 for a 1 1/2 bed flat. Yes, you read that right, there's a half bedroom. My landlord was honest and advertised the second bedroom in that way as it's tiny, could just about cram a single bed and bedside cabinet in there. Perfect for me for extra space - I have my fridge/freezer and bookcases in there. Usually these flats are advertised as 2 beds. There are some poor sods living in these flats with 2 kids!
I got a bargain - one recently came on for rent at £775 a month (although in nicer condition than mine).

kentishgirl · 09/04/2014 16:07

And yes, I could in theory just about afford a mortgage on a flat - but I can't save the £15,000+ it would take for deposit and costs.

JonSnowsPout · 09/04/2014 16:08

£530 a month in reading berks. It's a two bed flat

Would love to own but cannot afford a deposit.

Sparklysilversequins · 09/04/2014 16:10

£620, two bedroom house conversion flat, West London. I'm extremely lucky to have a HA property.

Cleorapter · 09/04/2014 16:13

£470 a month for a large, two bedroomed flat in Hertfordshire. It's a beautiful area. Nice and quiet, friendly neighbours, lots of greenery. The rent isn't bad.

Well we couldn't save for a mortgage paying that, and the council tax and the £400 fares for DH to commute and all the other bills. In fact there is fuck all left over. Altho, fortunately we both had savings and sold flats we owned before meeting, so have managed to get together a deposit and are currently buying somewhere. However, if we were to buy the flat/area we live in - we couldn't afford a mortgage - it would be about £2k+ a month and a 10% deposit of £40-£50k.

indigo18 · 09/04/2014 16:19

Not renting but DC are. one pays 1450 a month for one bed flat in West London (share so she pays half). Other Dc shares flat in Dorset, on coast, pays half share of about £750 a month. One in London could afford mortgage but little hope of saving deposit.

Biddyfive · 09/04/2014 16:19

We pay just over 2000 a month for a 2 bed flat in Central London. We wouldn't get a mortgage as our work is too precarious. The flat we are in would cost 850k to buy and that is too much for us even if we could borrow the money. I have no problem with renting apart from the insecurity of it, and we are powerless against the endless rent hikes. This is just the sort of area where people rent to get into the schools and then buy further out once the youngest has started in reception.

PinterestWhore · 09/04/2014 16:27

£770 pcm private rent for a 3 bed semi with huge garden in a vair vair desirable, naice semi-rural Cambridgeshire village. There's a farm at one end of the road and a village green with pond and thatched cottages at the other.

The village primary is super, the secondary pretty bad imho because most people around here opt for independent schooling after age 11.

I rent for choice. I've owned and have no desire to do so again, particularly as it would cost me twice as much in monthly mortgage repayments if I were to buy this house or one like it.

LilyLilyLilyOiOiOi · 09/04/2014 16:42

£740 for dinky 2 bed house in west Berkshire.

Should be a bit more but we rent from my Mothers friend!

ElaineVintage · 09/04/2014 16:45

800 per month for a massive 3 bed flat with panoramic sea view and a garage. We are in a Broadstairs.
Was previously paying 1350 for a 3 bed house with garden in central Brighton.

territt · 09/04/2014 16:45

about 3400 a month for a 2 bed flat.

SnookyPooky · 09/04/2014 16:48

€600 for a 3 bed detached new build in Cyprus. Was an eye watering €940 when we first viewed it. Offered €750 and paid that for a few years then got a rent reduction last year. We still pay too much but we love the house and have an amazing landlord.

whois · 09/04/2014 16:49

Um, nope. To buy a flat similar to the one i rent I would need 550 to 600k. At the moment, for me, renting is better value.

Wantsunshine · 09/04/2014 16:52

Wow territ I am guessing you are in London.

chrome100 · 09/04/2014 16:55

I live in a 2 bed flat in Leeds. The rent is £500. I share a room with DP and another couple lives in other room, so each person pays £200 (rent and bills) every month. I hate flat sharing! But our living costs are so low this way and we have so much spare money at the end of the month to actually live with (go away for weekends, do our hobbies, have trips, eat out, save etc) that for me it's worth it.

sunshinysummer · 09/04/2014 16:57

£1300 a month for three bed semi with a big garden in the south east. It is in catchment for great primary and secondary schools so worth paying.
We could afford mortgage payments on this house easily-the problem is (for us and many others) the deposit.

We can not get a 10 or even 5 % deposit while paying £950 per month in nursery fees and £1300 in rent! We will look at that when our youngest starts school.

30SecondsToVenus · 09/04/2014 16:57

£650 for a small 2 bed end terrace house just south of Edinburgh

I move next week to a decent sized 3 bedroom flat, another 20 miles south and it will be £500 per month

I am so looking forward to the move I can't wait to have more space
