What would you think if MNHQ asked you to strip for a charadee calendar

Because that's what they're asking Gransnetters to do and I think it's utterly depressing.

Although I'm not a gran even though I'm old enough I like going on the GN site because they have some interesting discussions.

One of the members came up with the idea of posing for a calendar and HQ have taken up the idea and want volunteers to have their photos taken with pieces of technology covering their "bits". This is to dispel the image that older people, ie over 45, don't know how to use technology.

So would you strip for a MN calendar and how would you feel if HQ mooted the idea?

No ageist comments please.

If you look nearer the end of the thread you will see that many people are dead against it. Horrendous idea.

Hopping over from GNHQ to say...

  • This all stemmed from a thread on the no make up selfies... one gransnetter suggested there were better ways of raising awareness (she is a doctor if that makes a diff) and offered to pose as the Rokeby Venus in pearls and nowt else and a strategically held mirror to cover whatever she didn't want to be seen. This was welcomed on the site and she came to us to ask how best to do it and make it most effective.

  • The idea of others joining in came from that. Quite a few people are keen to do it

BUT - it's for GNetters to decide (their idea in the first place). Some of the issues raised here have also been raised on our site, plus much discussion on different ways and things to do...so there is lots for the original poster and for GNHQ to mull over before any decisions are made.

Raising awareness of the myth that older people, ie over 45, don't know how to use technology - or raising awareness of something else?

I think I'll be sticking with Mumsnet then, Gransnet seems an odd place.

So as many of you will know, following on from the whole selfie phenomenon, Galen volunteered to do her own pose to raise money (and awareness) for research into cancer. (You can find the original thread HERE

That got us thinking, and in consultation with Galen we have come up with the idea of doing our very own Calendar Girls style calendar. To raise money (and we are happy for people to decide which charity). To raise awareness (ditto). And also to turn on its head the idea that older people (and one person we spoke to who is working to get "older" people online is targetting those above 45...) cannot be internet savvy and up to speed with the latest technology.

So - classic poses with any bits that need hiding (smile) hidden not with the obvious cakes and flowers but with smart phones, lap tops, tablets, e readers etc.

Galen has laid claim to the Rokeby Venus with a Mac Air instead of a mirror. Now all we need is 11 other gransnetters to volunteer too (groups welcome!)

There will be nothing on show that you don't want on show. Logistics are being logisticised (is that a word?!) so do pick a pose and join the fun...

It was titled
A brilliant idea form Galen...

Hi everyone smile Just wanted to reassure you all that the last thing GNHQ would want to do is suggest anything that would make anyone feel uncomfortable - as you know this was an idea that stemmed from galen's suggestion of posing as the Rokeby Venus and, therefore it's up to her/you all if you want to take part or not. But the charity calendar is a still a really lovely idea, and of course doesn't need to feature anyone naked to raise money, that was just one idea

No it doesn't make any difference that she's a doctor.

What a very strange thing to say.

Is a doctor getting her baps out for the lads somehow more classy than Kimberleh down the estate doing it?

It truly gets better.

Galen sounds, erm, quite a character.

Laid claims indeed.

Out of interest, how would the BMC feel about her getting her tits out? Because my GP is male, and I certainly don't want to see his todger on a calendar, not even if it has a Nokia Lumia dangling off it.

The fact that she's a doctor actually makes it worse- it suggests that she's got the intelligence and education to engage with the subject and its complexities- but still thinks it's a good idea............

It's a great idea. I've often thought "what this society really needs is more pictures of naked women". Can't get them for love or money.

Hmm

What on earth?! The divergence between the page 3 campaign and this is unintentionally hilarious. And how did the original idea mutate into using this as a way to consciousness raising about "old" people and technology?!

The comment from mnhq about the person who thought up the idea being a doctor is just plain weird. And irrelevant. Do professionals carry more weight on this site? If so, you all have to agree with me as I'm a lawyer Confused

Love the idea that being a doctor makes a difference as to whether your idea is shit or not! Weird.

SirChenjin · 05/04/2014 13:53

I'm still not sure which part of the bright idea put forward by the Doctor (genuflect, genuflect) is worse - that those of us over 45 are at odds with technology, or that in order to raise awareness of this (non)issue the solution is to produce yet another nekkid calendar.

I'm sure she's very nice and everything (she is a Doctor after all), but perhaps the amount of formaldehyde she's inhaled over the years has affected her synapses?

Unless, of course, she isn't a real Doctor (ie a medical one) Grin Grin

The Rokeby Venus? The same painting that was slashed in protest by a Suffragette in 1914?
Not so much tits out as arse out I seem to recall. Well, each to their own.
If your bum is big enough, you could have a charity logo painted on it.

I'm all for freedom of choice & expression, so if a few grans netters want to do it good luck to them. & as for the naked calendar thing being done to death, so what? - so has most things ( dressing up in silly costumes to run the marathon for example )

Go Gransnet!

Report
wigglesrock · 05/04/2014 14:27

No, sorry doesn't make a "diff" that the original idea was mooted by a Dr. Is there a sliding scale of how seriously MN or Gransnet take ideas based on the professions of members? God that's depressing Sad

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 05/04/2014 14:49

Is the idea to 'raise awareness' or 'raise money'?

On a serious note, there are a lot women disenfranchised from technology and the digital landscape - job seekers & unemployed, women with mental and physical health problems, women with English as a second language, the housebound, the financially deprived.

I guess what is needed is:

  • training & free training
  • access to high quality technology
  • more investment in broadband
  • more consumer education about services available online and about how to access information and services that are increasingly ONLY available on a website

I'm not seeing how a calendar is going to help with that Confused

I think the idea is to give a platform to a bunch of attention seekers.

It isn't even the right time of year for a calendar ffs, needy or otherwise.

If she's not a real doctor, SirChen- she should be stripped of her user name under the Trades Descriptions Act.......

I think there's been quite enough stripping thank you.
