What would you think if MNHQ asked you to strip for a charadee calendar

Because that's what they're asking Gransnetters to do and I think it's utterly depressing.

Although I'm not a gran even though I'm old enough I like going on the GN site because they have some interesting discussions.

One of the members came up with the idea of posing for a calendar and HQ have taken up the idea and want volunteers to have their photos taken with pieces of technology covering their "bits". This is to dispel the image that older people, ie over 45, don't know how to use technology.

So would you strip for a MN calendar and how would you feel if HQ mooted the idea?

No ageist comments please.

45? FORTY-FIVE?

I'm sorry but that is a fuckload more patronising than the whole 'naked' thing. FORTY-FIVE? Oh hur hur hur look, 45 and knows what a USB port is.

I don't know why I'm so fucking infuriated given I'm still just in my early 30s, but IF this is true, WHICH I slightly doubt, because I can't bring myself to believe it, it is one of the most bizarrely ageist things I've ever heard. Presumably perpetrated by an 18 year old who's never met anyone older than 30.

Anybody want to see me naked but for a 5 1/4 inch floppy?

Thought not. All a bit passée now anyhow"

They said 'technology'. Your small floppy barely qualifies.

If I was asked I'd be wondering why MN wanted to produce a calendar guaranteed to give children nightmares.

I'm 40 and work in digital media. So in 5 years time I'll have an AOL account and ask my DCs if they can "print off the Internet" for me to read at bedtime?

Here's the post from CariGransnet

"That got us thinking... we have come up with the idea of doing our very own Calendar Girls style calendar. To raise money (and we are happy for people to decide which charity). To raise awareness (ditto). And also to turn on its head the idea that older people (and one person we spoke to who is working to get "older" people online is targetting those above 45...) cannot be internet savvy and up to speed with the latest technology.

So - classic poses with any bits that need hiding () hidden not with the obvious cakes and flowers but with smart phones, lap tops, tablets, e readers etc"

And I don't understand engagement as prelude to marriage when you cohabit?
Why not crack on with it?no huge costs.monies saved for weans and house maintenance

Crikey. Is this really supposed to give the idea that "older" women do actually know what to do with new technology? "Yes, we have found a great new use for it covering up our naked bodies! Of course we don't actually USE the laptop, we'll leave that for someone younger and preferably male". Hilarious. Hmm

I can't believe this isn't an April Fool's joke.

Re: the earlier point, which is kind of a derail but I think interesting.

Feminism is about more than women making choices. It's about making choices that are good for women, not just one individual woman. Just because the person making the choice is a woman doesn't make it automatically a feminist choice.

By logical extension, feminism is about recognising that all choices women make are in the context of structural sexism where economic, social, cultural, psychological, familial and other pressures are overwhelming and omnipresent. It is expecting the impossible of any woman, feminist or not, to make ideologically pure decisions. We're compromised by our existence in this world.

We also have our own desires and libidos and bodies and should oppose any type of policing of what we do with them.

This is still a shit and dated idea though. Calendar Girls was made in 2003 FFS.

More seriously, I think it would be a very mixed message to send, on the one hand supporting the no more page 3 campaign and on the other hand supporting this.

Dear Grans: I've only read the first page of the GN thread, it seems the idea for the calendar has come before any idea of a particular cause or charity to support, you just want to 'raise awareness' of something?

You all just want to get your tits out because ... Confused Actually, think about this carefully, why do you want to do this? Lots of you must have granddaughters - what sort of a world would you like them to grow up in? What would you like them to be valued for? How are you helping or hindering this?
