Superhero day at the DC's nursery and half the girls turned up in Disney Princess dressed. Very pretty but completely not relevant surely!

Don't worry Tethers, one day all our children will know all the Superheroes

When the Geek inherit the Earth

It is a sad commentary on the lack of proper superheros for girls. That and everyone with a pre-schooler is piss bored of super-hero themed stuff and the expense.

tethersend · 02/04/2014 19:52

Or the lack of princesses for boys Wink

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 19:56

When the Geek inherit the Earth

LOVE that!

Ploppy16 · 02/04/2014 19:57

I'd honestly rather DD1 went to.school as Rapunzel than Wonder Woman. Pretty dress just short enough to run in or a boob tube? No contest. I'll be happy to.let her dress like a female Marvel Comics character when the.artists stop.drawing them in.clothes that belong in a nightclub with tiny waists and pointy boobs. I'd rather she went in dressed as a Disney Princess. Apart from Sleeping Beauty.

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 20:00

This is the ultimate kick-ass chick...

To think Disney Princesses are not superheroes.

HoneyDragon · 02/04/2014 20:04

Tank Girl. Tank Girl rules.

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 20:04

It's Tank Girl TheSkiingGardener

It's a comic/graphic novel but they made a film out of it Grin

She is my hero...she is SO damn cool.

She has a tank....it blows shit up

OverAndAbove · 02/04/2014 20:04

March beat me to it.

Those "super heroines" are not what I would hope a little girl would aspire to. That type of costume is usually only available in adult sizes, thank god.

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 20:05

She does rule...I have shaved most of my head in her honour.

OverAndAbove · 02/04/2014 20:06

Sorry, it was Ploppy who said it firsr

HoneyDragon · 02/04/2014 20:08

What about Matilda? She has superpowers, but like Belle, she rescues Miss Honey then Miss Honey rescues her back and they live happily ever after.

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 20:10

Yes Matilda rocked it. I loved that book.

DD3 (4) won't wear a dress full stop. DD1 (9) was fairy princess- tastic while DD2 (7)used to like going to parties dressed as a robin.

The eldest wants to be an artist, the middle one wants to be a chemist and third one is currently being a ninja.

I am raising three girls as individuals and am frankly past caring whether they choose fairy princess or crocodile dundee.

It means fuck all once they get to school. The real business is getting them to be confident and articulate and not to start wilting over boys 'ownership' of IT, sport and science.

Once children get to school gender stereotypes are enforced and reinforced so you have to help children negotiate that. Superheroes/ princesses...meh

roald dahl's reimagining of red riding hood . . . .

Then Little Red Riding Hood said,
'But Grandma, what a lovely great big furry coat you have on.'

'That's wrong!' cried Wolf. 'Have you forgot
'To tell me what BIG TEETH I've got?
'Ah well, no matter what you say,
'I'm going to eat you anyway.
The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers.
She whips a pistol from her knickers.
She aims it at the creature's head
And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead.
A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change! No cloak of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, 'Hello, and do please note
'My lovely furry WOLFSKIN COAT.'

Superheroes, my girl has a couple of costumes. Most of the characters you can buy though are for boys, male superheroes. Or they are in the 'adult section' of shops and bloody unsuitable.

OP you do sound a bit sneery tbh.

It's a dress up day, do you care? I'm surprised anyone dresses their 12m old up tbh. Did he notice?

fayrae · 02/04/2014 20:26

WonderWoman and cat woman are household names, and Black Widow is a famous character nowadays. Then there are other ones such as SuperGran and Tank Girl.

2468Motorway · 02/04/2014 20:39

If you are a working parent (likely if you have little ones on nursery) you can't buy many of those costumes. Also making your own cat woman for a 3yr old? Really?

I have to say though hats off to the nursery staff, getting 30 tinies in and out of those batman/spiderman/ superman costumes for loo trips must have been a challenge.

fayrae · 02/04/2014 20:47

There is also rogue and storm from the Xmen, other female characters in that as well. Kids know the superheros more than adults do. Disney Princesses are not superheros and it annoys me to see them represented as the distaff equivalent such as in those kinder eggs that are out at the moment.

cheepsskram · 02/04/2014 20:54

I'm definitely in the camp of "Disney princesses are not superheros"

Disney princesses are in my bad books this week because in using the story of The Little Mermaid with my class, 100% of them (Year 2) did not realise that the Little Mermaid and the Prince do NOT live happily ever after!

2468Motorway · 02/04/2014 21:00

Fayrae, It was a nursery not many tiny ones will have heard of Rogue or Storm. The op has a 12 month old and a 3 yr old there.

Dress up days make my heart sink. I have 3 kids and not enough money or time to be constantly sorting costumes so while I agree princesses aren't superheroes its a very restrictive theme for small kids. I bet 50% of them were spiderman too.
