To think Disney Princesses are not superheroes.

Superhero day at the DC's nursery and half the girls turned up in Disney Princess dressed. Very pretty but completely not relevant surely!

mmm it's another bloody dress up day.

we need to get out of the house in 10 minutes.

grab the nearest outfit that won't cause a melt down

go to nursery.

any other business is for those who have spare time to think about things that really don't matter.

Grin
mrspremise · 02/04/2014 19:03

World BOOK Day at DCs school included several Mario Bros, two ninja turtles and a minecraft 'Steve' character. Book schmook, it seems... Hmm

TheSkiingGardener · 02/04/2014 19:04

See our nursery doesn't do many. DS1 has been there 3 years and has only done about 3 dress up days (he only goes on 2 days though) so maybe we haven't had this overkill yet.

Merida refuses to have an arranged marriage, can shoot an arrow better than the men, follows the lugs everyone else is afraid of, rapunzel in tangled breaks free of her slavedom, saves them with her hair a few time plus a good couple of whacks with a frying pan, tiana in princess and the frog opens up her own resturant, Anya treks up a mountain to find her sister, elsa has ice powers,
None of the more recent ones needed a man to rescue them/ waiting for a man to come along

ScarletLady02 · 02/04/2014 19:05

Batman is DEFINITELY a superhero...

On our world book day I went dressed as Tank Girl Grin

She is MY super-hero...she kicks so much ass

MargotLovedTom · 02/04/2014 19:11

Hear hear thebody.

Do you only have sons OP? You come over as being slightly sneery about the things you think little girls like. My dds have had spells of liking princessy stuff. They also like Lego, Minecraft, mud, climbing trees and wrestling eachother and plenty of other stuff inbetween.

mercibucket · 02/04/2014 19:15

i have girls too and i agree with op. problem is though, mostly girls want to wear the princess outfits.
sexism in disney. who'd have thought it

TheSkiingGardener · 02/04/2014 19:19

I hope I didn't come across as sneery. I certainly didn't mean it that way. I do only have boys, which probably explains my misconceptions about Disney Princesses. I had no idea they did anything except prance about being pretty. I honestly just looked around the room and wondered where superwoman, cat girl and spider women were amongst them all.

The ownership of dress up costumes obviously explains why princesses might be more prevalent, I have so far not bought any specific costumes for the boys so don't have that factor.

Sorry that was a bit harsh of me.

I'm just bloody sick of dress up days - we've got one tomorrow and it's not been two weeks since the last one (this is school).

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2014 19:21

Wtf is superhero day?

cory · 02/04/2014 19:23

What's so great about the male action heroes then?

If dd ever found herself in an intolerable domestic situation I would far rather she emulated Snow White (move out and get yourself a job) than almost any superhero going (bash everybody over the head).

TeacupDrama · 02/04/2014 19:25

my DD has wings and wand so same outfits can be butterfly fairy princess etc , i am not buying different outfits for everytime they think of something else I was seriously tempted on World book day to send in boden pinafore as Lola in the end she went as lily rabbit from peter rabbit pink dress pink cardigan with white pompom sewn on and rabbit mask (6 for £3 in ASDA)

the floaty dresses do not seem to stop much, DD can climb anything in a skirt and tights, the only time she could not get over top of the climbing frame was when wearing new pink cord trousers the fabric was too stiff it actually stopped her getting her legs over the bars!

pretty much any women that achieved anything before 1930 did so in a floor length dress, climbing mountains exploring Sahara being a doctor etc

doing non-"girly" things does not mean it is compulsory to dress as a boy I'm a dentist with science A levels etc I just prefer dresses and skirts does not mean I can't do science or my job effectively whether i wear head to toe pink or pin striped suit

daykin · 02/04/2014 19:27

Girls wanting to dress as a princess isn't a 'problem'. It's a perfectly normal developmental stage and arguably better than telling girls that the things they like are uninspiring or impractical or not as good as what they boys are doing. If you actually read the stories rather than make assumptions based on the femininity of the clothes then you will see a range of resourceful and competent women. Apart from Sleeping Beauty who is passive to the point of bovine and a total waste of space.

tethersend · 02/04/2014 19:29

"I honestly just looked around the room and wondered where superwoman, cat girl and spider women were amongst them all."

Are those characters any more than an afterthought though? Superheroes are almost exclusively men, and it could be argued that asking all children to dress as superheroes puts the (parents of)girls at a huge disadvantage.

Superheroes are sexist Wink

Ubik1 · 02/04/2014 19:31

Are you really bothered about this op? really?

mercibucket · 02/04/2014 19:32

Batman doesn't have super powers, therefore he isn't a superhero. He's just bloke that likes dressing up. Like Flash Gordon. On the other hand Spiderman is a super hero because he has super human powers. I know this shit because my VBF is a thorough geek and so is her BF. They dress up for fun

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_superheroines Loads of them if you are widely read enough

TheSkiingGardener · 02/04/2014 19:37

Not hugely obik. Due to my out of date knowledge of Disney princess it just struck me as a bit odd. I'm not very girly (science masters, geeky) and most of the outdoorsy stuff I do you can't do in a dress. Women got a lot more competitive in the relevant Olympic events when they ditched the frocks. So I guess I was looking at it from my own background and viewpoint. Silly me.

I am so pleased someone has written these, new stories about brave, strong princesses - Merida,, frozen etc
Dd loves princesses and I was having to change the words every time I read her sleeping beauty, who basically just lied there being pretty and a prince fell in love with her. Not exactly what I want to teach her!,

HowContraryMary · 02/04/2014 19:40

Women got a lot more competitive in the relevant Olympic events when they ditched the frocks.

Tell that to Martina Navratilova.

Do you not think that coincided with strides in education, equality, diet, and so forth. Its a bit like saying men ran faster when the Olympics weren't restricted to Oxford and Cambridge competing for the places a'la Chariots of Fire and letting the natives run.

tethersend · 02/04/2014 19:41

"Loads of them if you are widely read enough"

If.

That was my point- only those in the know are aware of any female superheroes; and many of them are female 'versions' of male superheroes.

TheSkiingGardener · 02/04/2014 19:41

I wasn't talking about tennis.

Batman is a super hero. As are Iron man, the Green Lantern, the Arrow, Hawk Eye and the Black Widow.
