Superhero day at the DC's nursery and half the girls turned up in Disney Princess dressed. Very pretty but completely not relevant surely!

As others have said all the traditional female supper hero's wear basques over leotards or skin tight cat suits, Hardly suitable attire for a three year old in April.

Girls aren't vaguely interested in super hero stories. They did an English exercise on them at the senior school taster day. Even at 11 DD1 was seriously Meh. At pre school she'd just have been totally Confused

Surely a nursery should just say cone in your favorite dressing up outfit, themes are a bit much.

At pre school she'd just have been totally really?! I know plenty of girls that like superheroes. My own three year old loves them and I made her a cape and mask recently.

Ds4 had a superhero party last month, each child got a cape (made out of cut up pillowcase) with their initial on the back and then they decorated them with fabric pens.

If you look online there are tutorials for how to cut a big t shirt so it becomes a no sew cape.

Nut princesses can be super too, anyone can be a superhero if you believe they are. Tho I imagine my ds4 would be particular over what counts sage is marvel obsessed. There are more female super hero's than you would think but the costumes are a bit risque!

Ah, but you have DSs. I don't I have two DDs.

Not particularly pink and frilly, but no one to introduce them to super heros. I've never seen a spider man film or read a Marvel comic.

I tried to watch a batman film, it was dark and weird and I turned it off.

MY DDs idea of a super hero is Harry potter or Hermione or Dr Who or Amy.

And as for DH, he's to busy being a geek to watch TV.

I know prople with just girls whose daughters like super heroes.

At a recent dress up day at school there were some girks who dreseed up as super heroes. The capes we made at ds4's bday were just as popular with the girls as the boys.

I don't think Disney princesses are heroines in any feminist sense, on the other hand if I was 4 and had a Disney Princess outfit (or 45 with a Disney Princess outfit) I'd wear it whenever possible and suspect the parents want her to get as much wear out of it as possible.
Most of them just show you that being cheerful and doing lots of housework (Cinderella, Snow White) gets you your man, unless you are rich and live in a castle when being an incompetent seamstress is OK as long as you have lots of fairy friends.

No-one tells you when you have children that you'll be needing a relentless supply of fancy dress for 10 yearsHmm

my dd likes spiderman...but she chose to go to hero day as peppa pig ... who was I to tell her otherwise lol. she is only 4 and if peppa pig is her interpretation of hero then so be it (probably finds the cheekiness and too much talking heroic traits)

Historically, the earliest Princesses they were heroines, they had no dowerie or worth and married for love.

Well, I struggle with Aurora, because quite frankly Maleficent is way more awesome. But I'm a grown up Grin

oh god just shoot me now
i am so depressed by this rewriting of what it means to be heroic
'marry for love indeed'

Well it's slightly braver than marrying so your dad and brothers get a shit load of cash and land Grin and such justification means I don't have to buy a superman outfit.

Hmm I have a 3 yr old in nursery [WTAF is a superhero day anyway]
Behold the choices available if you have limited time and imagination.
I count 11 princess outfits, 2 doctors, 1 nurse, 1 Ninja turtle, 1 Batman and a Gruffalo outfit.
Other than Wonderwoman, Supergirl and Elastagirl possibly I can't think of any female superheroes (I don't watch a lot of kids tv admitedly so more relevant models may be available). I'll boil in hell before my 3 yo DD goes to school dressed as Wonderwoman in a basque and shorts though.
Perhaps we could set up a thread via Mumsnet linking to kids costumes that they and we would actually like them to wear and are age appropriate!
