to think my neighbour has overreacted?

My MIL has a bit of a mouth on her, and yesterday, shouted at our neighbour who accused her of driving too fast into our close as she was putting her kids in the car. MIL shouldn't have said what she did so I went round to try and smooth things over as MIL was really upset.
I spoke to the neighbour and pointed out that MIL was so upset and that she would never hurt a child, but the woman was still very angry about it as it was in front of her children and she was on her own drive. I said I didn't want to argue and she said she didn't care as she had called the police! Wtf! I told her if she did that I'd tell them she didn't supervise her kids properly as I've seen them run out into the road.
I thought she was bluffing but there was a police car there just now! AIBU to think it's a waste of police time if she's just having a moan about my MIL?

Hmm
Whatsyourpoint · 28/03/2014 20:14

It is awful behaviour. I hope the police do have strong words with her and that your letting agents ignore the email.

Do you know what your LL thinks about it? If they ever lived in the house then I guess they know these people.

OnIlkelyMoorBahtat · 28/03/2014 20:16

Spotty just seen your update - naturally I now change my statement to "your neighbour and her MIL sound like scum" Smile

Sorry this happened to you, must have been awful, well done for not letting them get away with it. People's sense of entitlement to do and say awful things to other people never ceases to amaze me.

Spottyandstripped · 28/03/2014 20:18

The letting agent was fine and openly doesn't like the landlady - she's messed them about something rotten. We had wanted to extend our tenancy and the agent has been pressing the landlady to make a decision. So agent got an email from LL saying "my decision is that I'm not making a decision. Please tell the tenant (not my name, just The Tenant Angry) to ensure she parks considerately, and refrains from being rude to the neighbours." (Paraphrased)
Letting agent was stunned, especially when I told her what had happened. She said that LL is a silly woman and she'd try and find us a nicer house!

Your landwoman is a cunt!

Stropzilla · 28/03/2014 20:20

I'd be looking to move too if I were you! That must have been really horrible.

Pleasejustgo · 28/03/2014 20:21

Agency sounds unbelievably unprofessional.

Berryglitter · 28/03/2014 20:22

Awful. Hope you're ok! YANBU at all and definitely haven't overreacted.

Spottyandstripped · 28/03/2014 20:22

The family concerned are always in the local glossies, think County Life type stuff. And yet she has a mouth like a toilet. It makes me smile they have a royal warrant!

OP posts:
evelynj · 28/03/2014 20:29

Ooh I hope you do have CCTV-I'd invite a reporter to stay over with a camera in the hope of catching her go loopy again! What a cow. Mouthing off like that in front of kids is so uncalled for. Keep us updated please!

Pleasejustgo · 28/03/2014 20:30

You're gossiping now and the royal warrant isn't relevant.

MIL may be unwell/a mad raving drunk/grief stricken and taking it out on you/having a breakdown or whatever (no excuse for such undignified scummy behaviour) and a danger to herself and others (dangerous driving is unacceptable) so yes calling emergency services warranted.

YANBU

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/03/2014 20:30

Are you the land'lady', Please?Grin

Beamur · 28/03/2014 20:30

Er, LaurieFairlyCake check out the post above yours.

HaveToWearHeels · 28/03/2014 20:30

Jesus how awful, to be honest as a LL if I got an email from one of the neighbours about one of my tenants, I wouldn't take any notice.

Spotty without making assumptions, if you can rent in an area like that you can move luckily. Hope you find some where suitable and move away from the neighbours from hell.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/03/2014 20:32

What's the business they run?

Spottyandstripped · 28/03/2014 20:35

No viva we don't. We do have CCTV but it wasn't switched on. I told her it was.

Entertaining read, enjoyed the gradual unfolding. Got distracted from masterchef so it must be taht good.

OP they sound like a bunch of twats, ASBO those Burberry asses

Lambzig · 28/03/2014 20:46

Gosh, imagine being able to afford a house of that price, but still having such vulgar neighbours. Hope you find somewhere nice OP.

eddielizzard · 28/03/2014 20:48

oooh what a potty mouth!

Binkybix · 28/03/2014 21:16

They sound like a bunch of cunts! If business is well known I'd be tempted to go to the press and/or contact the Royal household if charges are pressed or a fine is given. They might withdraw their endorsement :)

Birdsighland · 28/03/2014 21:22

I think your mil hurled invective at the neighbour. It was sheer abuse.

However, I do think that even if you are doing only 10 mph, if somebody suddenly comes out in front of you, you still have to slam on the brakes. You are still moving forward and have to stop immediately.

There is no independent way of knowing your mil's speed though. Would it be unlikely for the neighbour to have said anything if her speed was careful?
