I even saw an 18 month old drinking coke from a can... Confused

DS would have happily become dehydrated before drinking milk or water - wouldn't touch milk at all from 18 months and never drank water no matter how much i tried.

He is 4 now and still won't drink milk, we are slowly having progress with him drinking water but he still has diluted juice as his main drink.

ChunkyPickle · 21/03/2014 19:34

DS1 (3) goes through phases (currently on a milk phase, was previously on a water phase), but we could only persuade him to drink from a cup rather than me at first with juice. He's fine, his teeth are fine, and he would rather die than drink fizzy (he took a swig of my sprite once and acted as though he'd been fatally poisoned!)

DS2 (6 months) is game to try everything in a way that DS1 never was. So yes, he's grabbed my glass and had the tiniest taste of everything from coke to lime and soda to water, milk, juice (although I've drawn the line before wine or beer).

It seems to me that different flavours are what we want, no matter whether liquid or food, and as my nan said, a little of everything does you good.

Misspixietrix · 21/03/2014 19:35

. Seriously. Did your parents not teach you how to share or were they too busy giving you 6oz of Cola? Grin.

chandellina · 21/03/2014 19:36

Yanbu, there is absolutely no reason for children or adults to drink sweet drinks like juice apart from pleasure, so fine if it's an occasional treat but it's certainly not healthy. That said, soya milk and almond milk have less sugar than cows milk and still taste sweet. Water is best for thirst and milk is good for nutrition, for protein and fat.

Gawd I'm trying to track down infant fennel tea in the hope that it will sooth 4m old DDs tummy.

Should I be worried about a knock on the door from ss?

DaftSkunk · 21/03/2014 19:37

Nah I'm not biting.

Odaat · 21/03/2014 19:38

Dd only has water - hv scared me and said my dd's teeth could go black. She had seen it happen apparantly. I know it is unlikely and i really couldn't give a shit if other kids have juice. I fed my dd jars , formula and she has choc at times (shock horror!) so her having water is my salvation! Its the one area I can feel , yeh I am doin something 'right' hahah

fishybits · 21/03/2014 19:38

I am a terrible parent.

Misspixietrix · 21/03/2014 19:39

MadamCasterfoire consider it done. On the phone to them as I type. Wink.

clairemum22 · 21/03/2014 19:39

Am also intrigued what magically happens on the child's 3'rd birthday.

Misspixietrix · 21/03/2014 19:40

Epic autocorrect fail on your name Madame. Apols Blush.

Odaat · 21/03/2014 19:40

She still has her milk obviously! (I had no choice but to ff by the way) and she only has choc buttons once in a blue moon

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/03/2014 19:42

When my dn was about five, my sister and me took her to an outside bar in the sun, I had a bacardi and coke and she had a coke. She kept tasting it and moaning it tasted funny and we just told her to stop making such a fuss.
Until I tasted mine.
Oops Grin

YABU. My DC's were weaned on the finest champagne and cognac. They learned to pass the port before they could spell their own name.
Now feck off keep your knickers on and relax, it's the weekend!!

HauntedNoddyCar · 21/03/2014 19:43

I still have warm ribena sometimes :) We used to have that with disprin in for a cold. It was the 1970s though when judgypants were polyester and couldn't be hoicked as high as now.

Misspixietrix · 21/03/2014 19:44

odaat my DCs have drank diluted juice repeatedly. Teeth aren't black yet. Last dentist visit told their teeth were perfect.

Misspixietrix · 21/03/2014 19:45

Haunted Grin.

lessthanBeau · 21/03/2014 19:45

when you have had your 3 year old screaming with constipation because she doesnt drink enough of anything , that can of coke looks pretty much like salvation! (not that she had coke but if it would have worked I would have given her it)

Sparklingbrook · 21/03/2014 19:46

YABU. It's real-life parenting.

chandellina · 21/03/2014 19:48

Just remembering giving 18 month old a coke once waiting for a plane in Thailand... All rules get broken.

MammaTJ · 21/03/2014 19:48

I feel the need to go and wake my imaginary toddler and give her wine!

EmilyAlice · 21/03/2014 19:50

My toddler used to drink weak tea.
He is 42 now. What symptoms should I be worrying about?
He doesn't like tea now.

gastrognome · 21/03/2014 19:55

I cared a lot about this sort of thing with DD1. With DD2, not so much.
Not a big deal every now and then, as long as they aren't swilling down sugary drinks all day every day. A little bit of what you fancy, and all that.
I care more that they brush their teeth twice a day and see the dentist twice a year.

monicalewinski · 21/03/2014 19:58

Gave my two diluted juice from a few months old - was all they would drink from their tomee tippee cups, also gave them flat coke when they had vomiting/diarrhoea bugs ShockShockShock
