A woman on my facebook has just posted a 'selfie' of herself with no makeup with the caption 'I am doin this selfie with no make up on to raise awareness for cancer .. if your tagged in this then u have been nominated to do it'

I posted asking how exactly this is raising awareness for cancer.

Have had loads of inboxes of abuse from random people saying I'm evil and obviously don't give a shit about cancer Confused

You heartless bastard. Go take a utterly pointless selfish RIGHT NOW!

trambampoline · 18/03/2014 00:38

More like "'I am doing this selfie with no make up on to get comments about how good I look without make up to help with my low self esteem... ps something abut cancer'

I'd also be annoyed by the use of "your"

NurseyWursey · 18/03/2014 00:38

Will this do?

Grin at taking a 'selfish'

UncleT · 18/03/2014 00:58

Fucking losers. If there was some kind of explanation of how this helps with cancer then fine, but as it is - it's simply a case of people doing random crap under the guise of helping with cancer. This kind of crap desperately makes me want to abandon that stupid site. Share this if.... Do this or.... Hoax promotions to get personal details.... Attention-grabbing vague posting resulting in a chorus of "what's wrong hunnie?" and so on, ad nauseum. BOLLOCKS to the lot of it.

HadABadDay2014 · 18/03/2014 01:08

Mine would be the same as every other selfie I post, I don't own make up.

Don't know what to do with the stuff, don't want to learn.

NurseyWursey · 18/03/2014 01:10

It's actually really annoying me now thinking about it. Stupid women sat at home pouting in the name of cancer. Arghhhh

2Retts · 18/03/2014 01:45

I'd be interested to know too NurseyWursey as I have a relative sitting at home effectively dying of cancer right now.

I appreciate and understand the Race for Life. I get the shock factor of the Kerry Harvey campaign. I totally want the Sophie Jones petition to succeed in some form of action (particularly considering Sophie's mother's comments comparing the NHS' stance on providing boob jobs).

We all know people get cancer. Some of us know the stats on knowing someone who will get cancer. There has to be a laser focus on issues to get a response which yeilds some formative results; taking 'bare selfies' is not the way forward IMVHO. Especially if you're not somebody who will make news in doing so...seriously...ffs!

2Retts · 18/03/2014 01:46

*off (of course)

NurseyWursey · 18/03/2014 01:47

I'm really sorry about your family member 2Retts

I don't think these people realise how bloody offensive things like this are.

OP posts:
2Retts · 18/03/2014 01:49

PS Love the 'selfish' but it's not bare so please do not purport to be focussing on cancer awareness issues with that one, especially on facebook.

NurseyWursey · 18/03/2014 01:50

Shock I've not a scrap of product on, how very dare you. It's completely au natural

Thank you so very much for letting me vent NurseyWursey, you are to be applauded for being politically incorrect and calling social pressure out

NurseyWursey · 18/03/2014 01:54

Definitely in agreement on that one Wink

NobodyLivesHere · 18/03/2014 02:14

...damn you iPhone...selfiE* lol

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 18/03/2014 05:08

Raising awareness is often not what's required. She could stop buying make up for a month and donate the money saved if she wanted to make some small difference.

I really hate slacktivism like this. I think it's worse than doing nothing at all. People get a warm feeling inside from copying and pasting or liking on fb and I think it makes them less inclined to actually do something.

PedantMarina · 18/03/2014 05:14

You know, a lot of foundations have SPF these days, thus reducing risk of skin cancer, at least.

Just sayin'...

picnicbasketcase · 18/03/2014 06:42

YANBU - everyone already knows cancer is a bastard and that it exists, how does a photo of someone's face actually do anything to help anyone? Ridiculous as those things where people post a type of fruit or say what colour their knickers are and it's meant to 'raise awareness'. It makes me have to hide or delete people.

Indith · 18/03/2014 07:16

I agree it is daft. To raise awareness something needs to be instantly recognisable.

I seem to recall something about bear faced? I've seen a collection box in the post office, stick money in, get a little sticky bear and you are supposed to wear nothing on your face but the bear. No idea what charity it is for though, if I saw one I'd assume children in need not cancer.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 18/03/2014 07:21

Is it 2 much 2 ask for ppl 2 do this 4 cancer? My mums dog died of cancer Sad plz make the efort ppl Sad

PedantMarina · 18/03/2014 07:40

PostmanPat, you're killing me.

FrancesNiadova · 18/03/2014 07:56

There are so many of these,"please share," Facebook/Twitter posts now that they are gimmicky & have lost any meaning. They remind me a little of the chain letters from yesteryear!

I've recently had the all clear from Breast cancer, I had a mastectomy & a scare with spinal bone Mets which were negative, thank G! The support I had, from the cancer charities: breast cancer care uk especially was wonderful. BUT, I do get upset with all the adverts on TV, they really upset my DC's & DH too. Sometimes, we'll be watching a show as a family & there'll be a really upsetting ad in every break, we end up turning the show off & reassuring the ch again. I know they have to raise money & that I have benefited from that, but the ads can be too often & too emotionally overpowering. I suppose we're all still quite raw ATM.
