A woman on my facebook has just posted a 'selfie' of herself with no makeup with the caption 'I am doin this selfie with no make up on to raise awareness for cancer .. if your tagged in this then u have been nominated to do it'

I posted asking how exactly this is raising awareness for cancer.

Have had loads of inboxes of abuse from random people saying I'm evil and obviously don't give a shit about cancer Confused

I would agree it raises awareness if everyone posting a picture also made a donation, therefore doing something positive. Or shared info of how to check your breasts.

But all the selfies I've seen so far consist of replies of 'oh you look lovely hun', etc. how does that achieve anything?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 19/03/2014 12:24

My DH has an excellent man idea. But saying it would totally out me! It's hilarious.

NurseyWursey · 19/03/2014 12:25

I've seen a few men post photos of them with makeup on, it's hilarious

This is my response… Put on some make up and be nice to a breastfeeding mother the-mouth.co.uk/put-on-some-make-up-and-be-nice-to-a-breastfeeding-mother/

Oldraver · 19/03/2014 12:42

I've also seen a man with make up, plus someone threatening to starting a 'goochnomination' a pick of his ballsack with no make up Grin

I just posted a link to Blood Donation and Anthony Nolan... but joining them isnt as 'look at me' as a selfie

TheFabulousIdiot · 19/03/2014 12:46

It annoys me too.

'I am doing this selfie with no make up on to get comments about how good I look without make up to help with my low self esteem... ps something abut cancer'

I REALLY Want to put this on my wall.

justwantitmadeforme · 19/03/2014 12:49

YANBU.

It is really getting on my nerves, most of my FB friends haven't donated, just posing stupid pouting pictures with concealer no make up on.

how anyone can compare a make up free face to the effects of cancer/radiotherapy/chemotherapy.Angry

My sister had two operations, a radical neck dissection and radiotherapy. the radiotherapy burned her skin and made it a different colour. People used to stare look at her when we were out. Angry

make up free face is in no way comparable.

Sallystyle · 19/03/2014 12:51

I just posted a status about it too.

My kids just lost their father to cancer. I have to watch them grieve, watch them cry day in and day out.

Offensive fucking shit.

GimmeDaBoobehz · 19/03/2014 13:24

My feed is full of this rubbish.

I donate blood and am on the Anthony Nolan register.I don't wear make up because I don't need to hide who I am.

What's the point? It's not helping anyone.

PedantMarina · 19/03/2014 13:47

I like "selfish", but given their real intent, propose "sel-fishie"

(you see what I did there...)Grin

Birnamwood · 19/03/2014 13:50

I've just posted a rant on my fb page. I've included a link to CR text donation number in case that take offence to my words and my own fundraising page as I'm doing something on Saturday to raise money for CR.

my friend is on her sixth session of chemo for her fourth lot of cancer. I'm sure she's lying there in her hospital bed, whilst having complications with her line, thinking 'I'm so glad people are posting shit on fb, it's really helping me'

The selfies are getting right on my tits.

Birnamwood · 19/03/2014 13:57

Bloody hell, my fury has rendered my grammar useless.

^In case they take offence

and included my own fundraising page link ^

gemdrop84 · 19/03/2014 13:59

Mines full of it, got some people spouting off about the miserable ones that are questioning it. I've been nominated and shared these instead

I actually liked the person on my page who said that instead of posting a pointless selfie , when she didnt normally wear make up , she had made a donation to cancer research and then posted a link so others could do the same .

CheesyBadger · 19/03/2014 14:14

I have just got a barrage of these requests too, and not only do I have terrible skin so would not be posting a picture to get a 'ooh you look wonderful without make up' comment and would be utterly embarrassed, and for what? I don't wear much but do cover up big eruptions like now, as I am just self conscious of the redness.

All of that said, what has it got to do with cancer!? People seem to be mindlessly follow this crap. Only people with amazing skin are posting on my news feed so far.

frumpet · 19/03/2014 14:19

Two people have popped selfies on where they are clearly still wearing make up , do they think we are thick or are they being ironic ?

TheZeeTeam · 19/03/2014 14:49

One of my friends put a selfie of her looking like a drag queen, so I'm presuming she's being ironic. Either way, it did make me laugh.

desertmum · 19/03/2014 15:17

It's ovarian cancer awareness month this month - and I posted this

targetovariancancer.org.uk/landing_page.asp?section=416&sectionTitle=Ovarian+Cancer+Awareness+Month

on my fb page. My mother died of ovarian cancer - it was diagnosed too late and couldn't be treated. Posting selfies with no make-up on doesn't inform anyone of anything useful, everyone is aware of cancer unless they've ben living under a rock. Sharing info on how to check your boobs, sites that you can click on to give free mammograms to women such as this one

thebreastcancersite.greatergood.com/clickToGive/bcs/home

and sites such as the above advising the symptoms of lesser known cancer is a much better use of fb imo.

StrawberryCheese · 19/03/2014 15:22

I'm cringing at my FB write now. Usually perfectly sane women posting their selfie and then five mins later adding 'oops, I forgot to say donate to cancer etc'. There is now a debate going on about which is the correct number to text BEAT too...

What makes me sad is that most of my FB friends who are 'being brave' by going make-up free are all nurses.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 19/03/2014 19:33

Does anyone else have the issue of liking one of the people who have done this? I can't comment or do my usual ranty status as she would see and might get upset. She lost her DM to breast cancer so I feel like she should know better.

It's driving me to distraction.

WholeNutt · 19/03/2014 19:44

I just put this on a similar thread, NurseyWursey I joined the rant, couldn't help it..

All these bare faced selfies aren't raising awareness, if you're not already aware of cancer there's a problem. If you want to do something, donate. Don't use cancer awareness as a disguise for your narcissism.

We need a cure not self obsessed selfies.

Thanks for posting the number susie

Somersetlady · 19/03/2014 21:39

I might have missed something but the posts on my wall all say they post the selfie and text BEAT TO 70007 to donate £3 to the cause? Is this the same thing or are some people just so tight they are not doing the text part?

Somersetlady · 19/03/2014 21:57

When you text this message comes back. Thank you for donating £3 to cancer research uk and helping to beat cancer. Join our facebook page facebook.com/cancerresearchuk
