To think Carrie Bradshaw has no redeeming qualities?

I just finished the episode where she invites Big to stay with her and Aidan in their cabin in the woods.

Now if my boyfriend cheated on me (not just a one off but had a full blown affair with a married woman) and we had got to the point where I had somehow managed to forgive him and we were trying again. If we went on a weekend break and he invited the other woman because she was having boyfriend problems and they were good friends - I'd think fuck that!

I know Aidan didnt have to put up with that but there are many other examples of her not having any redeeming qualities -

Berating Charlotte for not offering to lend her thousands of dollars.
Always talking about herself - I remember when Stanford called her out on it.
Letting Aidan propose to her when she obviously didnt want to marry him.

I'm the opposite anon I don't think it's sad for them to be single and spending money on going out and shoes in their thirties, in fact I found the show refreshing in that regard Grin And they do have mortgages as well as shoes!!

It can be a bit smug though you're right there.

waltermittymissus · 18/03/2014 20:03

I always felt like Carrie had to be minded by the others.

The apartment episode where they all say they own their homes and she's still spending all of her money, not paying any attention to the future.

I liked that. I liked how the others had the fun, the sex, the highs, the lows but they were more realistic for me. Investing in their futures and not waiting for everything to fall into place!

Nobody has answered me about the Brady Brady thing though

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 20:09

Yeah and then they all offer her money as they all have savings. In Carrie's defence though, Miranda and Samantha are comparatively well paid and Charlotte got her house in the divorce - in fact if I recall correctly, she actively chose not to buy somewhere because she thought it would put a man off cos she's pathetic

I've always wondered about the Brady Brady thing too!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 20:10

I think he's still called Brady Hobbes though.

somedizzywhore1804 · 18/03/2014 20:13

I always wondered about Brady Brady too! I just assumed they never changed his name because that would just be cruel.

waltermittymissus · 18/03/2014 20:22

Really hated that she was painted as a romantic when all she was was a man pleaser!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 20:34

yeah can't stand her. Converting to Judaism etc.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 20:35

Not the converting! the man pleasing element.

Lighthousekeeping · 18/03/2014 20:43

She had to convert or else he wouldn't marry him. She wanted to marry Harry there was no other solution. She was my least likeable having said that. And most of my friends loved her. I never got Charlotte. Even when the actress was on Jonathon Ross last week I couldn't separate the two. I love Kim Catterell whenever I see her interviewed. I've heard good things about her in rl too Jessica, not so much

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 20:46

Oh I know Lighthouse but I wouldn't marry someone in that case! I don't think it's a good reason to convert to a new religion - surely believing in the religion's teachings would be the more important thing!

I think all my friends like Samantha. Don't remember anyone ever saying they liked Charlotte.

Lighthousekeeping · 18/03/2014 20:57

Isla Fisher did the same thing when she married borat. Someone else famous did recently as well. I think it's quite hard to convert. I don't think I could I'm too lazy! I did like Harry though.

Charlotte did Harry some good storylines to be fair. The addiction to the rabbit was fab marketing. The man who ate oysters? That was funny. The power lesbians was another good one.

I think SATC covered all bases Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 21:15

I liked Harry as well but he wasn't even particularly devout - just promised his dead mother. I like him in the film when he has the pink tie when Rose is born, so cute!

saffronwblue · 18/03/2014 22:17

I loved the series where Samantha had a relationship with a woman. I also thought Charlotte got her comeuppance with trey who ticked all the boxes of rich, big wedding etc but was a dud husband. It really illustrated how skewed her search for a husband had been.

DrOwh · 18/03/2014 22:23

Yep Charlotte was gold digger despite she didn't need to be but she looked over looks and convention and found true love and was genuinely happy .
Yes she was really annoying at times but she got everything she wished for. Lucky girl.

Kudzugirl · 19/03/2014 08:55

Santa Sebagh Montefiore converted to Judaism so she could marry Simon.

AnnaLegovah · 19/03/2014 09:26

I think its a bit harsh to say Charlotte was a gold digger. She had a very 'traditional' upbringing (as she put it once 'I'm from Connecticut' Grin ) where finding a rich husband was very important. She still had a decent career before she met Trey.

I quite liked her as a character - very far from my own background but like many women she discovered that the 'fairytale' most of us are sold as children is basically a bit shit. You can find your rich prince, but there's no guarantee his willy will work. Wink

Harry was awesome. "Greetings from Silicon Valley!" Grin Grin

Burren · 19/03/2014 09:42

I think SATC invented the irritating convention that women are obsessed with shoes. It seemed to arrive fully-formed out of the blue as a pop culture stereotype, and I think it was based on jack shit before SATC 'taught' women they were supposed to adore shoes.

(Can I just say that the few episodes I saw also, as well as the glossy nonsense, also had some weirdly gross-out physical comedy that was more like Bridesmaids - like the bit where Charlotte's Harry has a habit of sitting around on their prissy furniture naked, which horrifies her...?)

Lighthousekeeping · 19/03/2014 09:49

It made brides made same tame! There was no shitting/vomitting/swearing in it.

Lighthousekeeping · 19/03/2014 09:49

Sorry SATC looks tame compared to the gross that is Bridesmaids

anonacfr · 19/03/2014 10:22

It also had weird sexual acrobatics and Samantha frequently came after two seconds of some v unconvincing looking penetration.

HercShipwright · 19/03/2014 11:17

Burren Nah that was Imelda Marcos

Burren · 19/03/2014 11:54

Herc, I don't think so, honestly. That was more 'Dear me, Imelda Marcos, 1000 pairs of shoes, weird dictator excesses etc etc'. Like Gadhafi having solid gold bathtubs.

Now it seems to be some sort of truism that all women love shoes, and I date some of the popularisation of that to Carrie and all her shoe plots (being mugged for shoes/marrying herself so she can have a gift list in order to recoup her stolen shoes, various episodes where she gurns in shop windows at expensively spindly shoes).

Not that there's anything wrong with liking shoes - it just seems to have become weirdly compulsory.

AnyFucker · 19/03/2014 12:17

I don't give a shiny shit about shoes

Kudzugirl · 19/03/2014 12:21

Well I love shoes. I love clothes. I also love books, my former MA studies and profession, I am a plantswoman and gardener. I am your typical well shod multfaceted and complex 21st century woman.

Loving shoes does not somehow demean you as an independent high achieving Feminist. Neither does it indicate a reduced moral worth. Unless of course you steal them. And finally, not caring about fashion doesn't make you superior. Mary Beard has some cool shoes BTW. Nothing lightweight about her.

MaddAddam · 19/03/2014 12:24

She has terrible taste in men. Imagine choosing Big over lovely Aidan.
