to not understand why people consider McDonalds to be a "treat"

TalkinPeace · 13/03/2014 15:22

if I want a family "treat" meal I go somewhere with fresh, favoursome food made especially for us.

Why do people take their kids somewhere that sells the lowest common denominator of food and call it a "treat" ?

So the people who have answered about the weight are all a healthly weight Hmm kinda pisses over the theory of fast food and being obese, well on this thread.

fatlazymummy · 13/03/2014 19:45

McDonald's isn't my idea of a treat , and my kids aren't that keen on it either. Each to their own though.
Personally I don't like any form of fast food, but I'm not going to judge people who do.It's an individual choice.

Fairylea · 13/03/2014 19:46

I absolutely adore McDonald's. I don't give a flying fig what's in it, if it's an occasional thing who cares?! I love the taste of it. I will even go by myself as a treat if I have a rare afternoon without the children.

Really don't see how people can be so snobby about something which is (hopefully) a rare treat and it is cheap - I couldn't feed the 4 of us in a normal cafe or wherever for about the £13 it costs us in McDonald's.

wobblyweebles · 13/03/2014 19:46

12 stone.

Would you also like to know how tall I am? Or is that not relevant?

HenriettaMaria · 13/03/2014 19:47

Lots of poles up arses on this thread. Hmm

DH was a chef - he's retired now - a French chef, whats more. He knows about quality food and has cooked such food day in, day out for more than 40 years - he worked in Michelin starred restaurants in France. And even he is partial to a 'dirty' burger, now and again.

I cook from scratch (or cook as we used to call it) 355 days of the year. If every 2 or 3 months we treat ourselves to McDonalds, where's the harm, seriously?

And for the record I am 5 feet 7 inches, weigh 9 stone 2 lbs and, according to the NHS calculator, my BMI is 20.

MrsNoodleHead · 13/03/2014 19:49

Hate this kind of thread.

OP asks a question to which she must know the answer unless she is a complete dimwit: McDonalds = fun for kids, tasty and a bit bad for you, therefore easily capable of being a treat for some.

Then uses her pointless thread to spew snobbery.

Hmm Hmm Hmm

MrsNoodleHead · 13/03/2014 19:49

And have another one for good measure.

Hmm
Doctorbrownbear · 13/03/2014 19:52

Ikea food is rank. You are obviously too good for mcdonalds so stick to your fresh tasty food and let the commoners go there. Why do you give a shit what other people choose to eat?

caruthers · 13/03/2014 19:55

MrsNoodleHead

Completely correct.....some people think that unless you're eating from one of those dry as a bone graze boxes you're a walking talking sin eater.

Yanbu. I don't like McDonald's either, I'd rather not eat than go there. I'm not a snob, I just don't like the food, ethics and animal cruelty.

ComposHat · 13/03/2014 19:58

But kmc your handful of chocolates aren't in lieu of a meal. Whereas a McDonald's meal is.

On a limited budget choices are often about what keeps hunger pangs away for the smallest amount of money.

FourEyesGood · 13/03/2014 20:00

I'm sure someone else will have pointed this out further up the thread, but a "treat" is an entirely subjective notion. I know lots of people would consider a manicure to be a treat; I'd rather watch paint dry (or do they amount to the same thing?).

FWIW, we go to McDonald's as an occasional treat, because it's cheap and the children enjoy it. If DH get the chance to have a meal out without the DCs, we go somewhere which serves nicer, more interesting food.

(BMI of 22, if it has any relevance at all.)

flaggybannel · 13/03/2014 20:02

BIG MAC!

( drools)

lolatu · 13/03/2014 20:06

Ah yes the fat duck vc mcdonalds, who would have thought when faced with the prospect of chicken nuggets dipped in ketchup or snail porridge, most people prefer the nuggets. Still overpriced underportioned restaurants selling weird crap that nobody else makes because it tastes like dog turd help keep all the pretentious bellends occupied.

MidniteScribbler · 13/03/2014 20:06

We often have McDonalds when travelling to or from a dog show sometimes. We're usually on the road at about 4am, so by 6am we're hungry and it can be eaten when we're on the road. It's part of our road trip 'treat'. DS likes the nuggets and the toy. He also likes Korean, Yum Cha, and enjoyed eating at Atlantic and the Press Club, so I don't think I've ruined his taste buds for life.

It always astonishes me how upset people get about what other people eat. No one is dragging you in to McDonalds and force feeding you. Don't like it, don't eat it.

Fairylea · 13/03/2014 20:10

I will readily admit I am not slim. However I suspect that has more to do with the 4 pancakes and syrup I regularly eat for breakfast (and enjoy so not planning to give them up soon) as opposed to the occasional McDonald's I might have every 6 months ish.

No one can look at someone that is overweight and blame McDonald's.

dilys4trevor · 13/03/2014 20:14

Cigarettesandsmirnoff, you are missing the point here that almost everyone is making. Fast food is FINE if that is what you like (and I do sometimes), occasionally. Just as most things are fine in moderation.

That is why we are all of a healthy weight, despite many of us enjoying the odd burger and milkshake.

Scholes34 · 13/03/2014 20:14

My kids were once shocked when I gave someone directions to McDonald's in our town, as they'd assumed I didn't know where it was.

That was when they were much younger. We do go now and again, because it's relatively cheap compared to other takeaway food. It's a treat because we don't go from one summer to the next, a treat because I haven't had to make it and a treat because we have tasty wholesome food as a matter of course.

ZingSweetMango · 13/03/2014 20:31

coz I'm lovin' it

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 13/03/2014 20:38

I love mcds I love coca cola I love Americana and trash and all that wonderful stuff :)

The best mcds? Reykjavik. Only one I've had that looked like the bloody photo. It was marvellous. Moo to plate probs 2 miles. Simply simply de-fucking-lish! Still salivating now....

rhetorician · 13/03/2014 20:40

I don't much like McDs for myself, gives me indigestion now that I am elderly am an outrageous food snob but take my girls probably about once a month. They enjoy it, I enjoy being with them (better than trying to make them sit quietly in a restaurant full of people who really don't want to share their fine dining experience with a 5 year old and a 2 year old, and who can blame them?), food is a bit gack, but the rest of the time they eat proper home cooked food, so I can't see the harm. More harmful I think is to make sneery comments about other people's choices.

ormirian · 13/03/2014 20:44

I remember many moons ago being ripped a new one on here because I dared to suggest that the middle class MN holy grail - an Innocent smoothie no less - was not a healthy drink as it contained shedloads of sugar. Because after all its made of just fruit doncha know MC mummies are happy to be seen with it. Guess what? Big news recently - it's full of sugar a nd calories!!!! Nooooooooooo !

Not all food that is marketed as healthy is actually healthy, and not all food that is seen as crap is actually crap. A kids happy meal is no worse in terms of fat and salt than many other things we might give a child as a good meal - cheese omelette, or quiche and baked potato, pasta with meatballs... I'd bet that in terms of fat they'd be very little different.

Would a child thrive on a daily diet of Macdonalds? Nope. Will one meal a week do them harm. Nope. Perspective is needed and a little less snobbery.

trixymalixy · 13/03/2014 20:47

Mmm, I love a Big Mac. I also love chateaubriand. Different "treats" for different types of occasion.

We always go when we are on the motorway. The kids have allergies so easy and quick as you know exactly what they can eat. We once stopped at Tebay looking to get something naicer. And while they were very helpful and cooked especially for the kids, it added about an hour to the journey.
