If you saw a picture of Frida Kahlo, you would recognise this person? Or AIBU?

I know her, have seen some of her stuff in exhibitions,s even the film etc. I would have also considered her quite well known tbh. I'm not sure if I would say "most" people would know her as some people just have no interest or knowledge about the arts or culture but I would still have though a lot of people would have at least a passing awareness of her!

SinglePringle · 07/03/2014 20:22

Yup. My calendar in the kitchen is of her work. I love her. Madonna is a large collector of her work lucky cow star!

Interesting woman, amazing artist.

ouryve · 07/03/2014 20:22

Who?

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 20:23

This thread has inspired me to find out more about her. Apart from googling around are there any definitive biographies that are worth reading?

Lazyjaney · 07/03/2014 20:23

Yup, know her work, I think she's not in the culture though, more a bit cult like say Tamara Lempicka

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 20:24

Now, I have never heard of her.

Coumarin · 07/03/2014 20:26

Yes. I admire her for her art and her life. Her actual art isn't to my personal taste but I appreciate the meanings behind it.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 20:29

Tamare de Lempicka is famous for her stylised art deco paintings. I think most people would recognise some of her work if not her name.

frumpet · 07/03/2014 20:33

I would have said artist of the tortured variety , couldnt name her paintings or style , quite colourful i think < disclaimer has no artistic knowledge or ability whatsoever >

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 20:33

Nope. Never seen any of those. And I do visit art galleries.

saintmerryweather · 07/03/2014 20:36

Never heard of her but im not interested in art

morethanpotatoprints · 07/03/2014 20:39

Never heard of her, but my knowledge of Art are the classics.

Latara · 07/03/2014 20:52

Never heard of her.

Adeleh · 07/03/2014 20:52

One of the characters in Jacqueline Wilon's Girls in Love series does a project on her so lots of her readers have heard of her through that if nothing else. I don't think it would be especially dreadful not to have heard of her. Am curious about what's behind the question?

Frida rocks. she was a breakthrough for women artists and lived quite a difficult life by all accounts. Diego Riveria, Tolstoy living with them.

I want to visit her blue house in Mexico.

MsJupiter · 07/03/2014 22:06

I went to a costume party as FK. About 5 people knew who she was. Or at least recognised my costume.

Caitlin17 · 07/03/2014 22:08

I would be surprised at any one not recognising the name and the picture.

TheWomanWithTheMysteriousLump · 07/03/2014 22:10

Out of how many attendees MsJupiter? 6? 500? How are we meant to interpret your data if we don't get all the stats!

overthemill · 07/03/2014 22:16

Do know who she is and didn't see the salma Hayek film. But I don't know who lots of so called famous people are, so wouldn't recognise Beyoncé and my dad had a real go at me as I didn't know who Charlotte church was! (He was so amazed but then I don't listen to music radio unlike him)

MollyHooper · 07/03/2014 22:21

Now her I have never heard of squoosh.

Her work is beautiful.

Patchouli · 07/03/2014 22:22

The film passed me by until I heard of her through the Barbara Kingsolver book, La Lacuna. Then I found out more about her and saw the film.

eatmydust · 07/03/2014 22:26

Yes, I would and I would recognise a lot of her work, but I think YABU to think everybody would.

NigellasDealer · 07/03/2014 22:30

sorry to link to the dreaded Daily Mule, but this article has some great pix.
I love the work of Tamara de Lempicka too, so thanks for reminding me about her, only know the name because of a book I read that had one of her portraits on the front cover.
Too many great women artists are just ignored IMO.

MsJupiter · 07/03/2014 22:43

Sorry, I should have included that data.

About 50. So 12% of people would recognise Frida Kahlo as impersonated by a blonde woman in a wig.
