If you saw a picture of Frida Kahlo, you would recognise this person? Or AIBU?

"I'd be surprised if someone had not heard of her."

Why? She was never as well known as Picasso or Rembrandt for example. I only heard of her when the film was made, but really only got to know more about her when DD was studying her last year in art.

MaidOfStars · 07/03/2014 19:23

Not RTFT. Yes. Philistines.

Eastpoint · 07/03/2014 19:24

DCs who are 12, 14 & 15 know who she is.

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 19:25

"DCs who are 12, 14 & 15 know who she is."

Because she is covered in the curriculum. She wasn't when I was at school.

trufflehunterthebadger · 07/03/2014 19:28

yes, i know who she is without looking at the picture. Can I have a star ?

AnandaTimeIn · 07/03/2014 19:30

some obscure Mexican artist

She's hardly obscure! to you obviously

She's absolutely inspiring! Well worth reading up on her on Wiki.

Wasn't it Lenin she had an affair with? iirc....

Grin Saw an exhibition of her work years ago and took photos of the paintings (pre-digital), I had about 12 before I was told to stop.... He didn't even demand the film!

A friend went to her house (museum) in Mexico City and posted photos on FB. Still on my bucket list to go there luckily I have a friend who comes from there, so will join him on his next visit to his mum

Bonsoir · 07/03/2014 19:32

Yes - I spent a lot of time in Mexico when I was young and learned plenty about Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 07/03/2014 19:33

That's odd, kim147, I was reading the thread and thinking, she's not that famous, probably about Linus Pauling level. Grin

lljkk · 07/03/2014 19:35

yes I sort of know, but I'm north American & took a semester of Art History at Uni. I would imagine 98% of British people wouldn't know FK.

AnandaTimeIn · 07/03/2014 19:36

wondered for a moment if she was the ''je regrette rien'' singer.

That was Edith Piaf.... (it's on Youtube - love it! And saw her grave in that famous cemetery in Paris where Jim Morrison is also buried....and a host of other famous people).

MollyHooper · 07/03/2014 19:38

Yes.

Her fruit paintings make me nervous for some reason.

legspinner · 07/03/2014 19:43

Yes. Saw a really good play of her life with Rivera around 20 years ago (up till that point I hadn't heard of her!)

Ludways · 07/03/2014 19:50

If it's any consolation... I know who she is now! Lol

I know of lots of people who are considered to be iconic and leading figures in their fields that most people have never heard of. 'Tis swings and roundabouts!

Don't know her Confused

Should I?

TeenAndTween · 07/03/2014 19:56

Not a clue. Not that bothered by art (or music come to that).

Now, if she was something interesting like a scientist ....

CuriosityCola · 07/03/2014 19:58

No idea.

Blu · 07/03/2014 19:59

Yes, I would recognise the picture of her, would recognise pictures of hers and know loads about her art, her life, her love life...

But I wouldn't expect most people to know about her or recognise her, no.

dementedma · 07/03/2014 20:01

Never heard of her

I'm pretty sure most people I know personally would be familiar with her. A gang of us went to a Tate Modern exhibition of her work about a decade ago, and everyone knew what to expect.

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 20:15

"Wasn't it Lenin she had an affair with? iirc."

Trotsky.

The Père Lachaise Cemetery. A friend and I spent an afternoon there many years ago. I had first heard of it when I was studying Balzac for A level French many moons ago.

oscar126 · 07/03/2014 20:17

Err, no. Never heard of her and wouldn't recognise her. Is that bad?

WhosLookingAfterCourtney · 07/03/2014 20:18

Of course, love her!
