If you saw a picture of Frida Kahlo, you would recognise this person? Or AIBU?

That's ok, I wasn't reading it as a criticism or having a go at you!

insancerre · 08/03/2014 15:33

kim i never studied art either
i didn't pick it as an option
all we ever did was to do practical stuff, never any theory
and i went to a private grammar school, and i have a degree and i still don't know who she is
but if my ignorance makes other posters feel smug and better about themselves then they can 'smug' away Grin
i have managed to get this far in my life with my general ignorance

Wurstwitch · 08/03/2014 15:38

aaaahm Cadbury.

Death of the artist?

Does it matter? Does it?

Perhaps it could add a certain poignancy, perhaps it introduces bias in the consumer where none should have existed? And none was intended?

ProfondoRosso · 08/03/2014 15:41

I know who she is, but then fiercely talented female artists who did amazing things despite adversity are my kind of people! Smile I went to art school but definitely knew who she was before then. And I did reckon she was one of that small group of artists (Van Gogh, Warhol etc) who most people know about and would recognise.

But it just goes to show, people's interests and experiences are different. There will be millions of amazing women scientists out there who will be easily recognizable to plenty of people but not to me.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 08/03/2014 15:42

YABU. Reached the grand old age of 47 and didn't know who she was until DS brought some art homework back last year (Y8). But that's what I like about life, always something new to learn. :)

somedizzywhore1804 · 08/03/2014 15:42

Yrs, because of GCSE Art Grin

somedizzywhore1804 · 08/03/2014 15:42

Yes even!!!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/03/2014 15:47

Yes,I know her work and life story, all really interesting.

Yabu to think most people would though.

pixiestix · 08/03/2014 15:48

I'm surprised so many have never heard of her, I would have said she was a household name. I am the least arty person ever and I know her name, face and self-portraits.

nkf · 08/03/2014 15:49

I'm quite interested in the idea behind whether people should know who people are or what thngs are. I think the idea of knowledge is coming back into education and, of course, that raises questions about what should people know. Or what you could reasonably expect someone to know. And does it matter anyway as we can always find out on our phones in half a minute?

insancerre · 08/03/2014 15:54

don't know if anyone has mentioned this but some people don't even know the difference between the prime minister of the UK and the president of the USA
barraco barner anyone?

complexnumber · 08/03/2014 16:02

It arose as part of a conversation on inspiring women/international womens day

But what were the biscuits like?

BillyBanter · 08/03/2014 16:04

I'm fairly certain Barraco Barner is neither the UK PM nor the US president! Grin

Bunbaker · 08/03/2014 17:03

"Augustus John was definitely a bloke Bunbaker - I think you meant his (?) sister (?) Gwen."

D'oh Blush. Of course that was who I meant.

"I would have said she was a household name"

No, I wouldn't, as has been amply shown on this thread.

Nocomet · 08/03/2014 17:42

Art is terribly personal, I'm not drawn to portraits, and I'm turn off by art that has an obvious social message.

I like my books to have happy endings and my art to be pretty and maybe mysterious. I spend ages staring at this. There is a card explaining it, but I can't remember what it says it's just beautiful, it doesn't need to mean anything.

somewheresomehow · 08/03/2014 17:43

Not a clue

thegreylady · 08/03/2014 17:45

I have neither heard of her nor do I recognise her. I have no particular interest in modern art (I infer that she is an artist from previous posts).

thegreylady · 08/03/2014 17:48

Fwiw I have a degree and mix almost entirely with similar people. Dss is an art teacher and I am sure he knows all about this person. Oddly I do not feel deprived by this example of my own abysmal ignorance.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/03/2014 17:50

Yabu. Why on earth would you make that ridiculous, unfounded assumption?

ohfourfoxache · 08/03/2014 18:05

Nope, not a clue.

But having googled her she sounds fascinating.

Makes me wonder who else I've not heard of who I should be google-ing!

nkf · 08/03/2014 18:37

I think baraco bararno is an energy drink.

CremeEggThief · 08/03/2014 18:41

I only heard of her when the film came out. I couldn't 'name' any of her art.

JapaneseMargaret · 08/03/2014 18:51

Yabu. Why on earth would you make that ridiculous, unfounded assumption?

Enough people have come onto this thread to say they have no knowledge of art and yet have her of her.

She is fairly iconic.

So ...

ExcuseTypos · 08/03/2014 19:04

There is a documentary on Sky Arts Right now, if anyone is interested.
