If you saw a picture of Frida Kahlo, you would recognise this person? Or AIBU?

At least people know the UK doesn't have a President called Barraco Barner.

TheWomanWithTheMysteriousLump · 07/03/2014 16:47

The OP did eventually give her reasons ADish - she wanted to work out whether a) she had been talking to a group of freakishly ignorant people, or whether b) she had seriously over-estimated the prominence of a particular "famous" person.

The answer, clearly, is b) Frida Kahlo is not as famous as you thought she is.

Reasonable enough premise for a thread I think - I sometimes wonder how widespread a certain piece of knowledge is, and in fact that's a major reason for my obsessive love of Pointless.

morefalafel · 07/03/2014 16:57

ADish, that is rather a lot of assumption to make based on the one line question 'Do you know who this person is?' Perhaps you are bored?

As I've said, I honestly thought more people knew.

I also have a serious obsession with Pointless! Grin

I thought the pictures were of Michelleo Barner.

nauticant · 07/03/2014 16:59

Darn! Missed that others got there first.

PoppettyPing · 07/03/2014 17:06

I love Frida Kahlo. I've always seen her as a cultural icon. I thought she was more famous than she apparently is.

Ledare · 07/03/2014 17:08

I only know because of Madonna documentaries Blush

Ledare · 07/03/2014 17:08

Michelleo Barner Grin

2tiredtocare · 07/03/2014 17:09

The bird with the 'tache? Wink

Halsall · 07/03/2014 17:09

Another guilty Pointless fan creeping out of the woodwork here.

I did know who Frida Kahlo was, and would immediately recognise a picture of her, but I wouldn't assume a lot of people do/would, tbh.

hackmum · 07/03/2014 17:12

I know who she is, and know her paintings (though find them a bit creepy). Wouldn't expect most people to know, though. The wonderful Barbara Kingsolver book The Lacuna is partly about her.

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 17:14

I like Pointless as well Grin

Needavacation · 07/03/2014 17:19

Frida is a feminist icon, and I view MN & MNer's as having quite a big feminist stance, so I would definitely have thought that in this audience she would be well known.

I suppose none of you will be winning Pointless any time soon. Wink

KatieScarlett2833 · 07/03/2014 17:20

I know Madge rates her and has a few of her paintings.
Re the hairdressing comment. Which is more generally useful? The hairdressing NVQ or the art history NVQ?
I know who would be more employable, even if they know squat about Mexican cultural icons Smile

WillieWaggledagger · 07/03/2014 17:21

that depends on whether someone walks through the door of the hairdressing salon requesting a 'frida kahlo' updo Wink

Ludways · 07/03/2014 17:22

Serious Pointless (and Richard Osman) fan here, I must've missed the episode she was mentioned, how the hell did that happen? Must've been a celeb one, I don't like them.

CoffeeTea103 · 07/03/2014 17:22

No clue and wouldn't care to know. Yabu

Finola1step · 07/03/2014 17:23

I know who Frida is, know a little about her work and background. But I wouldn't assume that she would be recognisable to the majority of the British public.

I know he because I used to love hanging around the Tate to gain inspiration for teaching art to my primary school classes. Never saw the film.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 17:24

Oh, that's a very Thomas Gradgrind approach to education KatieScarlett.

Bunbaker · 07/03/2014 17:25

"Frida is a feminist icon, and I view MN & MNer's as having quite a big feminist stance, so I would definitely have thought that in this audience she would be well known."

I don't agree. I'm not convinced that everyone who is on MN is as interested in reading about feminism's you are. I'm not. I think of myself as a feminist, but in my own quiet way. I am not interested in reading about rampant feminism in the slightest.

Nope.

KatieScarlett2833 · 07/03/2014 17:26

All I know is in my line of work, hairdressers are few and far between Wink

Needavacation · 07/03/2014 17:28

Wouldn't care to know = if I don't know it already, it must be shit. What a fantastic attitude to opening your mind to new things!

treas · 07/03/2014 17:32

Yep - most KS2 children know as they often study her in Art
