If you saw a picture of Frida Kahlo, you would recognise this person? Or AIBU?

I've heard the name, the picture looks vaguely familiar, but that's about it really.
I'm not ignorant or uneducated, I just don't really have much interest in art, I know REALLY famous stuff like the sunflowers, the Mona Lisa, the scream but otherwise I know very little.
Ask me about music, or human anatomy/biology or welsh history instead!

SelectAUserName · 08/03/2014 02:57

Yes. My DH did a Fine Art degree a few years but I knew who she was before that. I think when I was younger and a fan of Madonna, she cited Kahlo as one of her heroines which first brought her to my attention.

wobblyweebles · 08/03/2014 03:16

Yes I recognise her.

Haven't seen the film but I recently read The Lacuna and now I want to go and visit Aztec ruins (however I'm going to see Mayan ones instead).

Wurstwitch · 08/03/2014 03:20

Ah, anyone interested in pere lachaise who fancies themselves as a bit of a culture vulture needs to read 'Waiting for Gertrude' by Bill Richardson.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 08/03/2014 07:42

Ah, that's woken me up! Nothing like getting properly riled of a Saturday morning. Luckily, browsing responses have dampened my grrr a bit and I think I can see the funny and innocent side of this now. When I read the thread title I did think it was a sneaky one-uppy thread and although I usually try to resist those, this one got me Grin. I can't bear ostentatious parading of cultural sensibilities if the implication is that others appear to be less in the know. FWIW, I was a big FK fan at art college.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 08/03/2014 07:53

Strange. So what if I did or didn't? I'd rather know what she was famous for than recognise her sodding portrait.

I'd have preferred who is this what did she do? Otherwise might as well be anyone!

has dampened

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/03/2014 08:04

I probably wouldn't have done if it hadn't been for the association with Madonna, and although I recognise here I don't know much about her apart from that she was an artist with unusual eyebrows.

Don't know who she is. She probably doesn't know who I am either.

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 08/03/2014 08:49

I think it is fascinating that so many people mention her eye brows.

Highlights to me how women are obsessed with other women's looks ( which in turn explains why the daily mail exists).

Off to pluck my mono brow!

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 08/03/2014 08:50

never heard the name and never seen the face.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 08/03/2014 08:53

I know who she is. I would recognise a photo (she is very distinctive) And I would recognise her art.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 08/03/2014 08:53

Tiggy she's dead.

Minifingers · 08/03/2014 08:54

I could look at her image all day.

Compelling.

MrsRuffdiamond · 08/03/2014 08:59

Am I too late to say that I know who Frida Kahlo is?

ExcuseTypos · 08/03/2014 09:08

I've not heard of her. But having had a google I really like what I've seen.
So thanks for starting this thread!

ExcuseTypos · 08/03/2014 09:08

She's very beautiful.

Bunbaker · 08/03/2014 09:13

I'm surprised at the number of adults who expect everyone to know who she was. Prints of her paintings aren't as ubiquitous as, for example, Van Gogh's sunflowers, or Constable's Haywain/Flatford Mill or indeed the Mona Lisa.

I would expect teenagers to know because learning about her work is part of the year 8 curriculum.

I only heard of her when the film was released. And I am now going to try and get hold of a copy.

It is human nature to remember someone who has a distinguishing feature BTW. How many people associate Van Gogh with "that painter who cut his ear off"?

McPheezingMyButtOff · 08/03/2014 09:18

I know who she is

Cultured, me Wink

CoolCadbury · 08/03/2014 09:24

I love the references to "she'd be a low score on Pointless". That about sums it all up.

To the poster who said that artists' backgrounds should not be considered when viewing art - of course it should as their background influences their art. It can give it a poignancy.
