To be irritated immensely by this person calling their house by its name instead of just saying "my house"

It's my stepmother to be who is revealing herself to be more and more of a narcissist.

She will say "I'm having work done at Gables Boulevard" (not real name of house) or "should we meet at Gables Boulevard before we go out?"

Why not just say I'm having some work done at my house or should we meet at mine before we go out?

I probably am being unreasonable as this is one thing in many that she is doing to irritate and take my dad away from us.

I feel almost like she's talking about her house, which is an average bungalow not a mansion, in the third person.

I would just let it wash over you.

That would masisvely irritate me too. I would probably feel quite unreasonable in letting it bug me.

Sounds snobby to me.

That's the kind if thing that would really get my goat as well! More for sniggering at than getting properly riled though.

Can ypu jist embrace her 'eccentricities' and see the funny side? Perhaps thats the way to go

Sounds like she's got a touch of the Hyacinth Bucket about her.

That sounds like one of those minor irritations that could eventually become a very major irritation over the course of time.

Personally I'd turn it into a little private game e.g. How many times does she say "Gables Boulevard" instead of "my house" in one conversation.

Then I'd laugh up my sleeve.

But then I'm easily irritated and crabby.

Oh my God I'd combust if I had to listen to that!

When she does use the first person, does it come out as "Ay"?

Next time she does it do a snort laugh and eye roll and ask her if you'll be getting picked up by Jeeves?

Maybe she has more than one house? My parents have a few properties and refer to them as xxxx road, yyyy close etc when we are discussing them. If that's not the case then yes, its odd.

We do this So all my sistets or I wpuld give the hse /rd name instead of saying x's house weould say the hse name. Home is my Nanas hse She used to make the best cakes

Some people need ways to distinguish their two or more houses apart. Though I think the super posh way is to use the name of the village/town, rather than the poncetastic house name they have chosen. But if your SM doesn't have more than one house YANBU. How does it take your Dad away from you?

You should give your own house a ridiculous name and do the same in her presence

Is it actually the postal house name that she uses? I have family living say at "riverside mill" and it is the name for the property as known to the postman, so it is natural to use the name in conversation. I have never thought badly of it.

If not, then it is a tad stranger. Just name your flat/house something exciting too.

My grandparents had 5 houses so we would call them by name to avoid confusion. We would say "just popping to Apple Tree" or "they're painting Elizabeth Road" just because it saved confusion. Even talking about them now we use the names rather than Nana and Grandad's. I don't think it pretentious at all. In fact thinking about it we call all our houses by name, we've all moved so many times it gets confusing till we're settled there for a while by which time it's become a habit. And now with XH and I and DD sharing 2 houses it's again easier to call our homes by name. I still say "come to mine" or "I'm going home" but I also say Rose Cottage needs a new fence.

I know a couple of people that do this.

It's annoying and it's confusing and it's just plain weird.

A colleague, same age as me so not a Hyacinth Bucket type, when asked what he was doing at the weekend said "We're going down to Gables Boulevard". When we queried this is turned out it was his girlfriend's parents' house. I could understand it if it was Windsor Castle, but it was just a house in suburban Surrey. And I could maybe understand it if we knew the place but we didn't and had to ask!

I've never forgotten the ridiculous snobbishness of it and it was 10 years ago! It would drive me insane if I had to hear that sort of thing all the time OP - poor you!

YY to the more than one house thing. i have a small rental flat, and would say 'B road' as opposed to 'Xroad' which is my house.

But otherwise it is just weird.

I was jumping onto the thread to say go with it, in fact, go over the top with it. Drop the house name into any possible conversation. And 'name' your house too. Mine is 'Casa Rochester', my heroine being Belinda from Tuscany for Beginners. Unleash the Belinda/Hyacinth within and have some fun with this!

I think it would bug me. My GM's house has a name and often the family refer to it as such, but I'm fairly sure if she was talking to someone about it she would say 'here', 'mine' or 'my/the house'.

My Granny does this . She used to usually own 2 houses at a time (living in one, building another) so that's probably why.

That wouldn't annoy me on its own. What are the other things she doea that are annoying you?
