Unusual male culture in local upmarket restaurant

A couple enter a restaurant. As they walk past the bar on the way to the restaurant area, three men at the bar begin to talk about the woman's perfume, speculating on what brand it is.

A waiter seats the the couple at a table. Almost immediately, one of the three men goes up to the woman, and asks her about her perfume. She answers and the man slips away. When the waiter next appears at the table, the woman, still baffled (to say the least) asks him who the man is. He replies that the man is not a member of staff, but a regular customer.

It turns out that the manager of the restaurant was one of the three men speculating about the woman's perfume.

As a witness to this event, what should I have done? Should my reaction be coloured by the knowledge that the daughter of a friend had found it extremely difficult to get rid of this man some years ago, to the extent that she had to threaten to go to the police?

what IS the actual point of this post??

I am often asking people what perfume they're wearing. Mind you I am not a man so maybe that's alright?

Mind you, if three men saw fit to comment maybe she had rolled in the bacon pan?

I am Shock that people would just go and ask a stranger what sort of perfume they are wearing! If someone was doing that, I would be answering but also finding that they are weird tbh. Esp if this was a man.

To the people who ask 'what is the point of the post' the OP states it quite clearly. She knew the man in question and knew he had been harassing a friend of hers before. So the behaviour has made questioning his motives, which, tbf, is completely understandable.

Rowena23 as I said, I would have found the behaviour very strange but wouldn't have done anything. She was with someone else to start with. I would have done so if I had seen that she was struggling to get rid of him and his presence wasn't welcomed iyswim.

Did the woman say 'I love to dance.'

Amrapaali · 03/03/2014 10:51

CloverHeart · 03/03/2014 10:54

Call the police!!!! Before someone gets stabbed up!!!!!!

Biscuit. You loon Hmm.

MarmaladeShatkins · 03/03/2014 10:55

Really, Moment? Someone says "Excuse me, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I really like your perfume. Can I ask what it is?" And you would think them weird?

I doubt myself more and more the longer I am on this forum...

SaucyJack · 03/03/2014 10:56

TBperfectlyH...... based on the OP...... I'm not at all convinced he was technically harassing her friend anyway.

It isn't yet a crime to speak to a member of the opposite sex.

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 10:57

I've lost count of the amount of people who have asked me what sort of perfume I'm wearing, over the years.

I probably should have asked for a CRB check but who has the time?

MarmaladeShatkins · 03/03/2014 10:59

I like it when someone asks where I got something from. I mean they;re probably asking so that they know to avoid that particular shop but still, it perks up my day.

Interesting reactions to this post.

I'm seeing a restaurant manager not acting professionally and a couple of hangers on of dubious character hanging about cadging free drinks and chatting up the female customers.

There is a restaurant like this near me and its gone down hill because the restaurant is being run by a manger who cares rather more about entertaining his mates than running a professional outfit for the benefit of the owner.

gordyslovesheep · 03/03/2014 11:01

Worra you should ask if they want to try it then spray them right in the eyes with pepper spray - the dirty stalky unusual male bastards

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 11:01

From now on I'm going to carry a bottle of perfume and squirt the nosy fuckers in the eyes...shouting "GET BACK!"

You can't be too careful.

MarmaladeShatkins · 03/03/2014 11:01

Not even chatting up, though, MoreBeta!

Asking someone what perfume they're wearing does not constitute a chat up!

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 11:01

X post gordy! Shock Grin

VeggySausage · 03/03/2014 11:02

Ok so one man who was a known creepy stalker hangs out in a restaurant and goes up to strange women to ask them questions about their perfume.

It's weird yes, not sure there is anything you could do though. I wouldnt hang out in a restaurants where there manager thought it was appropriate for his friends to creep up to the guests.
