Unusual male culture in local upmarket restaurant

Rowena23 · 03/03/2014 10:05

A couple enter a restaurant. As they walk past the bar on the way to the restaurant area, three men at the bar begin to talk about the woman's perfume, speculating on what brand it is.

A waiter seats the the couple at a table. Almost immediately, one of the three men goes up to the woman, and asks her about her perfume. She answers and the man slips away. When the waiter next appears at the table, the woman, still baffled (to say the least) asks him who the man is. He replies that the man is not a member of staff, but a regular customer.

It turns out that the manager of the restaurant was one of the three men speculating about the woman's perfume.

As a witness to this event, what should I have done? Should my reaction be coloured by the knowledge that the daughter of a friend had found it extremely difficult to get rid of this man some years ago, to the extent that she had to threaten to go to the police?

'confused' by Avon?

TheTerribleBaroness · 03/03/2014 10:27

Unusual male culture?

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 10:27

On a separate note, it'd piss me right off if I was trying to eat dinner and someone wore perfume so strong, I could smell it as they walked by the table.

cees · 03/03/2014 10:28

If he asked what color knickers she had on then that would be inappropriate but what you describe is nothing weird or strange to worry about.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/03/2014 10:28

I don't understand OP.
What is the issue?

FabBakerGirl · 03/03/2014 10:28

The perfume question is irrelevant. The OP is saying this man is someone who has caused her friend a lot of pain and she wants to know what she should be doing now she has seen him. Drama llama with the waffle about perfume. Title is wanky as well.

SaucyJack · 03/03/2014 10:29

"Thex Petht" by Calvin Klein.

MrsCakesPremonition · 03/03/2014 10:29

What has this got to do with male culture, unusual or otherwise?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/03/2014 10:30

I've asked people what scent they're wearing before I've also stopped women to ask where they go that lovely jumper/coat/shoes etc... In fact I've even stopped someone to compliment their child's hat and mitten combo and to ask where it came from.

I'm a social pest aren't I?

CuntyBunty · 03/03/2014 10:30

Was it a local restaurant for local people? Are you local, OP?

And where in this is anyone being Unreasonable?

Unless the three men at the bear were making "Phwoar, I would..." comments, complete with obscene gestures, I don't see anything 'odd' in them commenting about someone's perfume and then (politely) asking about it.

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 10:31

The fact her friend's daughter found it difficult to get rid of the man years ago, is still completely irrelevant Confused

Daykin · 03/03/2014 10:32

I think you should have ranked the people in the story in order of weirdness and then discussed it with your dining companion to see if there was any overlap. Mine would be something like this

Perfume woman - for wearing perfume then being baffled when someone asks her what it is.
OP - For pondering her reaction to a non event
Creepy man - for bothering perfume woman when she was sitting at the table.
Manager - for lolling about with creepy man discussing customers (although I get that he has to suck up to the bread and butter regulars)
The third man at the bar - for smelling strangers in a restaurant.

Was it a local restaurant for local people? Are you local, OP? Grin Grin

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2014 10:32

It's Mother's Day in a few weeks

Perhaps they were looking for gift ideas Grin

princessalbert · 03/03/2014 10:33

OP.

Were you the woman?

Sounds like a lot of fuss a bout nothing.

The restaurant doesn't sound particularly upmarket if the manager has his mates chatting in the bar area.

Binkyridesagain · 03/03/2014 10:35

It was McDonalds and the 3 men were teenagers waiting for their BigMac Meals. Grin

NotMushroom · 03/03/2014 10:36

Wow I was wondering what sort of unsual male culture this could possibly be. Esp something that takes place in 'upmarket restaurants'. Is this happening all over the country then?Confused I don't go to many upmarket restaurants so feel I'm missing out now.

MarmaladeShatkins · 03/03/2014 10:37

Grin at "Thex Petht" by Calvin Klein. and "lolling about"

I am always asking people where they got stuff. Blush
