to be angry at the dog groomer who shaved my dog's coat

I took my cockapoo for grooming at Pets At Home in Brentford and discussed the grooming. The groomer checked my dog all over and was happy there was no matting and we agreed how short the fur was to be cut. I was then asked to sign a form. However, when I returned 3 hours later to collect the dog I was angry to discover the groomer had shaved all my dog's hair off and disingenuously suggested she was full of matts. My dog is now barely recognisable.

SOME people definitely got out of bed the wrong side this morning. Nasty, some of you......really nasty.

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 11:45

I grew up with a cross breed, he was definitely a proper dog. We just didn't call him a .... Go on, indulge me, what would one call a GSD/retriever cross? Retrepherd? Shepatriever?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/03/2014 11:46

You are being like a dog with a bone. Regardless of breed.

Topaz25 · 02/03/2014 11:49

The reason people mention the name is that the trade in made up breeds is a rip off, which allows breeders to overcharge for mongrels while the same crosses die in shelters. That's why it's important to challenge the misconception that a cockerpoo is a breed. Of course it's also important not to be nasty about it.

I would also be angry at the groomer, they agreed your dog's coat wasn't matted and should have contacted you if anything changed.

pinkbraces · 02/03/2014 11:49

I get where your coming from OP, its horrible when you go and pick up your beloved dog and dont recognise it - the groomer should not have shaved your dog without your express permission, please complain.

I have a very fluffy labradoodle (yeah, shoot me Wink) and a couple of years ago we had to have her shaved as she had a skin problem, I knew it was happening but I still burst into tears when picked her up, she looked so strange.

It will grow back but that doesnt mean its ok for the groomer to just take it upon themselves to do what they want without the permission of the owners.

Topaz25 · 02/03/2014 11:52

WelshMaenad I grew up with a collie/springer spaniel cross. We used to love making up silly breed names like sprollie, we had no idea it would ever become a thing!

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 11:54

Fanjo, I don't really bother with breed, I just self identify as a bitch Wink

MelanieCheeks · 02/03/2014 11:57

Blimey, talk about a thread going off on a tangent!

I'm a dog owner, and I'd undsertand what was meant if someone referred to a cockerpoo.

I've also taken my dogs to the groomers, and been a bit disappointed when they've had to take off more than I originally wanted. But I'm not showing my dogs, the hair or fur DOES grow back, it's not that big of a deal.

chocolatemademefat · 02/03/2014 12:04

It will grow back. In the meantime keep the dog away from the mirror.

bragmatic · 02/03/2014 12:05

I'm going to get a Shi-tzu and a poodle, breed them, and call it a Shit-poo.

bragmatic · 02/03/2014 12:06

…just to get people riled up on MN.

Lotta hassle, but worth it, I recon.

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 12:11

Brag, that's a lot of effort for five minutes if incredulity. And there are so many unwanted dogs in shelters already. Could you not just get creative with Photoshop?

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/03/2014 12:13

I can understand why you're upset op.

Welsh has made me laugh with her inventive crossbreed names. Particularly golden schnauzerwestiedoodle Grin

MoominsYonisAreScary · 02/03/2014 12:15

Too late brag, its already been done Grin

BorcestshireBlue · 02/03/2014 12:15

We used to have a Bagle- he now lives with my Dad after being half squashed by our much bigger Newfoundland.

Bagle quite suits him!

KurriKurri · 02/03/2014 12:16

Annoying, they shouldn't have cut it so close without consulting you - but that's PAH - they can't even sex an animal accurately IME, let alone cut its hair.

But in a couple of weeks it will be at a short but neat cut stage, and your dog will probably look very smart. Have you got a jumper/coat she can wear on walks - she might feel the cold a bit with it short.

Weird that a thread about a dog's haircut has turned into a discussion of whether its acceptable to say cockerpoo - does it really matter what people call their cross breed? People say collie X or boxer X and noone has a problem - cockerpoo is a lot shorter than 'cocker spaniel crossed with poodle; and it gives a pretty good idea of what the dog looks like and what kind of coat it has (clearly very relevant to the OP's situation)

HavantGuard · 02/03/2014 12:20

Pets at Home are great for socialising dogs because you can take them into the shop. That's it. For everything else you are much better off with independent businesses you find from word of mouth recommendation.

bragmatic · 02/03/2014 12:21

Dammit Moomins. That'll teach me to wander off and put a load of washing on mid post.

Coumarin · 02/03/2014 12:27

Everywhere we've tried around here uses clippers, no matter what type of fur the dog has. I'm still searching for one we're happy with but in the meantime we've used the clipper happy ones and just put up with it. It grows back very quickly.

Although last time I was pretty unhappy when the groomer cut his eyelashes off. I had no idea that was even an option.

I groom him everyday and do a thorough check for and matting, lumps and bumps so the clipping is just what they do.

Coumarin · 02/03/2014 12:28

*any matting

Stinkyminkymoo · 02/03/2014 12:32

So it could have been worse

saintmerryweather · 02/03/2014 12:35

My mum is a qualified groomer (not actually grooming at the moment though) and is always horrified by the results that come out of our local PAH groomers. They are also very rough with the dogs (she watches them whenever shes in there)

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 02/03/2014 12:42

Thing is... if she'd said crossbreed, everyone would've been asking what the breeds are to get an idea of the coat/matting potential. At least by saying cockerpoo, people know what breeds we're talking about.

And not all 'designer mongrel' owners are bad, nor are we bad people for calling our dogs by their 'designer' name rather than 'mongrel'. We adopted a labradoodle from a rescue. Labradoodle is easier than "she's a crossbreed", "oh, what cross is she", "well her mum was a poodle, her dad was the result of a mixing between a labrador and a poodle".

So technically our dog is a Labradoodleoodle (think the 'official term' is back-crossed) but everyone understands what you mean when you say labradoodle. All this judginess. I could get judgy about breeders leaving dogs with lifelong conditions because they've been inbred to high hell to achieve a pedigree, but I won't Wink

Objection · 02/03/2014 12:45

wow some people on MN are real bitches aren't they? Who gives a shit how the OP describes the breeding of her dog. She came here for advice not a ripping.

Cockerpoo is a very common word used to describe a cross breed. Get over it.

OP - I would complain to PAH and get your money back on the premise that you weren't consulted on the change and you didn't pay to have the "style" given.

Coumarin · 02/03/2014 12:48

How does one go about finding a good groomer?

None of my friends have dogs that need their fur cutting so I can't go on recommendations. A google search brings very little up.

I've never been happy with the end result and the thought that someone might handle my dog roughly is horrible. Not used pah though.
