to be angry at the dog groomer who shaved my dog's coat

I took my cockapoo for grooming at Pets At Home in Brentford and discussed the grooming. The groomer checked my dog all over and was happy there was no matting and we agreed how short the fur was to be cut. I was then asked to sign a form. However, when I returned 3 hours later to collect the dog I was angry to discover the groomer had shaved all my dog's hair off and disingenuously suggested she was full of matts. My dog is now barely recognisable.

Op, I'm sorry you're upset. Do you have a coat for your dog which she/he could wear outside until they have more fur? Hope you can find another groomer next time your dog needs done who will listen to you and cut the dog's coat correctly.

But I do have to say I remember an aibu thread where the op's dd had had her fringe cut extremely short, and the overwhelming consensus was that she should get over it and stop being precious. Bizarrely, people have been kinder about the op's dog on this thread, although ruder about the dog's breed.

MN is a place of marvels :-)

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 10:17

But who better to challenge about said practices than those who perpetuate them by buying the poor creatures? •confused•

MrsBennetsEldest · 02/03/2014 10:17

Just out of interest OP, what was the form you signed? Did you read it?

MaryWestmacott · 02/03/2014 10:17

you know what, human hair grows back too, but I bet if you had taken your DC to have their hair trimmed and then without asking you, the hairdresser just got out some clippers and shaved it off, you'd be furious.

Get a local recommendation, they were wrong to shave your dog without calling you first.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2014 10:36

Welsh, she's already brought the dog so what's the point? Only purpose it serves is to make her feel bad about her dog. This thread wasn't entitled "should I buy a cockerpoo".

And it isn't about the "breed" of dog but the breeder. You can get plenty of shitty poodle or spaniel breeders who don't do health checks on parents, who breed more than one litter a year, etc. I've also seen cockerpoo puppies for sale where the ad states that both parents have had health checks such as PRA done.

I'd rather save my ire for shit breeders full stop.

OneMoreThenNoMore · 02/03/2014 10:48

It's not really relevant to the thread Welsh, but as you brought it up... My poor creature wasn't bought from a "puppy mill", and we didn't buy her for an extortionate amount because we wanted a "designer dog".

We researched and considered the type of dog we wanted for a long time; we decided on a schnauzer, found out that there were some schnauzer x pups available, visited the home twice to see the owners, saw the pups and both parents...

Just because someone has a cross-breed dog with a funny name, doesn't mean they're irresponsible pet owners. Hmm

MothershipG · 02/03/2014 10:51

OP - I haven't used them myself but know lots of people round here who use Curacloe on South Ealing Rd, opposite St. Mary's.

I do think that PAH can be a bit of a production line (except Sharon Sophia Smile) so they won't spend the time to comb out mats, just shave them off, but as you said if there was a problem they should have called you.

If you bump into someone walking 3 small scruffy black dogs, stop and say hi! We mostly walk in Blondin.

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 10:52

The fact that you call your pup a 'schnauzer x' and not a schnauzerpoo or a rottaschnauz or a golden schnauzawestiedoodle reassures me that this is indeed true, OneMore.

Birdo83 · 02/03/2014 10:59

Post pictures of the bald dog please. Grin

CrabbySpringyBottom · 02/03/2014 11:02

I have a cocker spaniel and, like One, researched the breed before deciding and picked a breeder very carefully. There are many, many unscrupulous dog breeders and puppy mills out there breeding cockers and every other kind of popular pedigree dog. You seem to be implying that it's only the 'designer dogs' that this is happening with.

The poodle crosses don't do it for me (although some of them are lovely dogs) and I think it's a cheek asking pedigree prices for them, personally. But on health grounds they're less likely to have hereditary conditions than pedigree dogs, I'd have thought. The problem isn't the whateverpoos and whateverdoodles, it's the dog breeding industry which allows people to breed for greed and profit with little care for the welfare of the dogs involved or for the healthy perpetuation of the breed.

Quite what that has to do with the OP's grooming dilemma is not clear to me. Confused

Beverleymoss · 02/03/2014 11:03

So it's just that the name sounds silly to you welsh ?

It's a cocker poodle cross, what do you suggest? Cockerspoodle?

You're posts make you sound like a bit of a twat really.

PenguinDancer · 02/03/2014 11:06

YABU for calling your mongrel a cockapoo.

No hate towards mongrels. We've had some lovely mongrels and some lovely breeds.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/03/2014 11:07

She didnt ask that. YABU for twisting the AIBU due to your personal grudge.

Birdo83 · 02/03/2014 11:09

A Cockapoo is a real breed and not a mongrel. Google it.

Don't people realise a lot of the current dog breeds originally came from mixing two types of dog?

Birdo83 · 02/03/2014 11:10

It's a cocker poodle cross, what do you suggest? Cockerspoodle?

Poocock?

WelshMaenad · 02/03/2014 11:11

I already suggested 'mongrel', Bev my love. Did you miss that? Cross breed or poodle cross would also be perfectly descriptive. Or just 'dog' when all else fails.

I may start referring to my felines as a Shorthaired Britmog and a Semi Common Mogamese. Would that make me more or less of a twat? I'm not sure what you're using as a benchmark.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2014 11:12

Yes she should have called you but at the end if the day the hair will grow back and having a bald dog is a bit of an advantage whilst the weather is like it is at the moment . I have my Patterdale x clipped every 6/8 weeks and when he went 3 weeks ago I had him done as close as possible and it's been great for getting him clean after muddy walks .i think you should try and focus on the advantages whilst his hair grows.

Fenton · 02/03/2014 11:12

Leave it with the pa 'my love' it just makes you look more of a dick.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2014 11:14

birdo a cockapoo is not a real breed ,there is no breed standard ,it is a crossbreed .

WorraLiberty · 02/03/2014 11:16

Blimey poor OP

This thread took off on a bit of a tangent didn't it? Grin

I hope you've got some sort of little coat for your dog, because I would imagine losing all its fur suddenly, will make it feel cold.

PoloMintCity · 02/03/2014 11:17

I know how you feel OP. The first time we got our border terrier groomed I took her to a local person who had all the right qualifications on paper and advertised himself as being recognised by all sorts. She had previously been hand stripped no problem but when I went back to collect her she was unrecognisable - far too short all over and it turned out he had shaved her which has ruined her coat and has meant she's never been able to be hand stripped again Hmm

SometimesLonely · 02/03/2014 11:27

I'm not a dog owner but have often wondered about cross breeds. Do you get the same cross breed if you cross a male A with a female B compared with a male B and female A?

PS I googled for a picture of a cockerdoodle and thought it looked delightful but I'm not going to have one

OneMoreThenNoMore · 02/03/2014 11:28

Thanks Welsh. The "designer" name for a schnauzer x is schnoodle Wink

These types of dogs are cross-breeds, not recognised pedigree breeds- so they are mongrels. Mine looks like a proper pedigree schnauzer though, lots of schnauzer owners stop us in the street to ask about her. We love her and don't care that she's not a proper dog Grin

Op, you can buy waterproof and fleece-lined dog coats fairly cheaply, ours cost about £12 online- might be worth getting one for your dog if she's not used to having such a short cut. And sorry for contributing to the thread derailment Thanks

Whatfun · 02/03/2014 11:35

I have a Westie and like her to have a traditional Westie cut. I took her to a new place in the summer and explained what I wanted. We agreed that she didn't have any matts.
When I went to collect her,she had been clipped extremely short, including her legs and head. She looked like a newborn lamb, not my little dog. When I questioned her about it, she said that she preferred westies that way. I was horrified. Yes, it did grow back, but that's not the point. I have never been back.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2014 11:38

sometimes pups in the same litter don't necessarily all look the same , it's no different to saying you have 3 children with your other half , you don't expect them to all look exactly the same do you . With the x breed pups pups in the same litter don't all even end up with the same kind of coat .
