To have reported neighbour

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 19:16

Tax disc on his second car, they have a main car and a works van, ran out at the end of January.
This car is mainly parked on the road, as is the van and other car, they have room on their drive for one car,but don't use it.
I have now seen him driving the car with out of date tax 4 times now. I reported him on the DVLA website this afternoon.

If the DVLA haven't automatically sent him a fine (and what an OP says about fines being automatic is true), chances are he has falsely declared SORN. In which case he might not have any insurance at all (otherwise why not just tax it).

Just out of interest, at what point do the DVLA send out fines? After 1 day untaxed/unSORNed? Ie would the neighbour have receive a fine by now, in which are the whole issue of whether to remind him in person or not is moot.

Er- by posting on here.......?

I'm amazed at the people on here that think breaking the law regarding car tax is acceptable. What other laws are acceptable to break, should we just pick and choose?
Nnnnnetc, if his tax runs out he isn't insured (read the Ts&Cs on your own insurance). He is therefore a potential liability to anyone he collides with. Hope it isn't you.

Why did you post? Genuine question.

What do you want from the thread?

Haven't you or anyone you know had an alcoholic drink under the age of 18 redbinneo?

The whole thread is gloating and smug. Why else would you post it?

It doesn't affect third party claims. His insurance company may not pay his repairs but he is still insured.

If the police stopped him for non display of tax and he had valid insurance, he wouldn't be prosecuted for no insurance.

I posted on here to ask IABU. I've received a mixture of comments, none which I've protested about, just looking at the reactions. I neither feel smug or gloaty nor nasty or vindictive.

Am amazed at those who are not thinking about how OP could actually be saving someone or some family from misery by one act of reporting. If neighbour not in wrong then will not be a problem for him surely...

Well why tell people on a public forum what you did then Rinky?! What answer do you want? 'Yes YWBR so well done?' The last line of your first post sounds bit too eager for a gold star.

It comes down to do you care about getting on with your neighbours? I do and I am lucky to have mostly nice, and all very different neighbours.
If it's not important, you can be civil, polite and keep yourself to yourself regardless of their behaviour and morals.

You got a mix of answers but it doesn't matter because you already reported them!

Redbinneo - he may find that his insurance company will refuse to pay out on his car in the event of an accident, but the 3rd party element will stand so any other driver would still be covered.

Police officers are all over drivers with no insurance, but they couldn't give 2 hoots about no tax disc (far more important things to worry about than enforcing taxes on behalf of other people). If no tax made someone uninsured it would be a different matter entirely.

Going out your way to dub someone in is wrong but thats my veiw dont know why you botherd posting in aibu when youve already dubbed him in.

Seriously get a grip. I can't believe you even thought to look at someone else's tax disc let alone report them. Get a life!!!!

X posted Rinky-you have no feelings either way? Ok, so doesn't matter and you wanted to know what other people thought of you?

Wtf! If he hasn't got a tax disc then tough shit for him if the op reports him. Good for her. I would do the same thing. Why should I pay tax and uphold the law when scum won't. Afaik you need tax to validate insurance. If he has one in post or lost then nothing will happen, no harm done.

Actually, I have read the small print on my insurance and the people saying he is insured are quite correct- my insurance says it will pay out only that which it is required to by law (ie to the other person) but will seek to reclaim the costs from me.

Even so, I still would have reported as it been a month since the tax expired, and he is still driving the car, and I would be concerned that there is a reason why it's not taxed- no MOT or insurance would be my first guess.

CrohnicallyFarting · 01/03/2014 21:19

Oh, and I wouldn't mention it to the neighbour myself (unless I was actually friendly with them and was absolutely sure it was an oversight and not done on purpose), as in the event that he receives a fine or worse, he would blame it on me.

But nevertheless more than a touch attention seeking with the whole mysterious Greta Garbo approach.

I await the big reveal with growing disinterest. Smile

My lovely neighbour informed me last year that my tax disc was out of date because they didn't want me to get into trouble, tax disc was sitting on my fireplace as I had forgotten to put it in. I have since renewed my tax and accidentally threw the new disc away! :( I am glad I have nice neighbours and not nasty vindictive ones

We drove around for a month without a valid tax disc on the screen. We had it, completely forgot to put it up on the day ours run out. It was a legitimate reason and when we realised we were Shock that we could have got caught, but actually, it is registered that we did already have it paid for, and police recognition systems would know that. So, that may well be the case for him.

YABU to not have reminded him in case for some reason he doesn't know, or has just not put it up.

Have you actually read your insurance Ts&Cs? Why do you think its so acceptable to break the law?

I did something, I asked if it was unreasonable, I have a mixture of answers. Can't really see why that's attention seeking.
If I was to ask should i report, await responses and then um and argh as to what decision I would make, surely that would be attention seeking.
There's nothing to reveal.
