To have reported neighbour

Tax disc on his second car, they have a main car and a works van, ran out at the end of January.
This car is mainly parked on the road, as is the van and other car, they have room on their drive for one car,but don't use it.
I have now seen him driving the car with out of date tax 4 times now. I reported him on the DVLA website this afternoon.

It doesn't matter if you have driven the car, or left it parked, without a valid tax disc or sorn, then you automatically get the fine.

Christ, you really know how to piss on someone's parade don't you? You've probably ruined OP's week now!

My car is SORN'd. It's parked on a private road. In the last 3 months I have had two knocks on the door from a community warden and one from a policeman in the evening ( when it is dark)asking abut the out of date tax disc which has been reported anonymously. It's a neighbour who has a MASSIVE chip on his shoulder about parking in our street and has made it his business to harass us for over a year about it because we rent and don't own like others. Everyone else in our street is lovely and very kind to us, and vice versa. He is a total knob. Please just leave people to their own business as you never know what is happening in their lives and a little kindness goes a very long way.

Yes, I could have spoken to him, but I didn't.

And does that give you a warm glow inside OP?

It's nasty and vindictive.

If he was involved in a collision with you, you would be covered (even if it took a while).

Without any motive what you did makes you a sneaky snitch. As I said, I hope you are beyond reproach.

Olympic, yes, that is vindictive.

olympic - the OP said she had seen the guy drive it around 4 times - a car that is SORNed can't be driven around, so if that's the case he's acting illegally by doing so. Your situation is completely different and irrelevant.

And it sounds like the neighbour is an utter knob, what a surprise.

How did you even notice that his car tax was out of date?
Has anyone else ever noticed someones tax disc?

However, although I think you were being over zealous reporting it you were right to do so as it might mean he has no MOT or insurance.

And you too are vindictive OP - you reported them because you have other reasons for doing so, not because you have any great ideas about road tax and it's payment. If you didn't have other reasons- those that you don't feel confident enough to say something about - you wouldn't have done it. It's not as if the tax has been expired for months is it?

Why would car insurance be invalid because the car tax was out of date? I've not heard that before. It's not one of the questions they ask when you insure your car.

I agree with Scarbella 2. Why would you take it upon yourself to get someone in trouble. Glad you don't live beside me.

what a lovely neighbour you are! Should your car ever need a jump start I hope he notices and offers to help... like a decent neighbour would...

Fucking hell!

Why are people attacking Rinky.

You'd be quick to AIBU if you were on the wrong end of a collision with an uninsured driver and having to fork out.

On another day OP, you might get more supportive posts.

We did this when neighbour had effectively abandoned their car half parked on road and half obstructing the pavement - car was not in a roadworthy condition. Like OP they had a drive but chose not to use it. The car was an obstruction to road and pavement so I felt no compunction about reporting it.

If the car had been legal then it wouldnt have been towed. It wasnt so it was.

OP that really is a drip feed.

However in that case I would have either kept my beak out or if I felt strongly, left an anonymous note under his wiper saying "I've noticed your tax disc is out of date, and I'll feel obliged to report you if you don't tax it". It would have given him some time.

Yes the neighbour now sounds like a git but that doesn't mean the op needs to be one.

Yanbu.

We live on a private road, and the amount of times people dump their cars without tax on our small road.

Don't worry, I report them. Nothing like seeing s bright orange sticker plastered over their crappy vehicle.

You cant tax your cat without MOT and valid insurance.

I do it online, it's easy to understand.

Neighbour is still a twat.

Report
Nicknacky · 01/03/2014 20:48

He is still insured even if tax is out of date, it wouldn't affect third party claims.

Who'd tax a cat?

There are lots of illegal things we all turn a blind eye to, most notably underage drinking.

In this instance there was a nice, rational thing to do, ie point out that that tax was out of date, and there was a spiteful, vindictive thing to do and the OP opted for the latter.

Would those defending her actions like it if their 16/ 17 year olds were reported for drinking?

River I don't see it as irrelevant, but each to their own! ( and I get why you are saying it is irrelevant)
Just commenting on a situation from the viewpoint of someone who has been reported by a neighbour who has a chip on their shoulder. It felt very uncomfortable ( ad upsetting as we have a lot going on which is so much more important and difficult to deal with) when I realised what they were up to and although I would never confront them, they have stopped acknowledging us now. It's made a situation we could have talked through had they come to see us themselves, much worse.

My other point is that reporting it is a waste of time as OP will find out. The DVLA will have information that OP doesn't. I was also waiting to hear that it was actually about parking issues. Wasn't surprised.

A tax disc cannot be issued if MOT and insurance has also expired.

It's a complete fallacy about not vehicle excise licence = no insurance. I wish people would check the facts before spouting such rubbish.

OP you sound like a busy body. Personally I couldn't imagine noticing whether someone has a vehicle exise licence or not. It's non of my business.

I would of noticed but I'm just one of them people.

Im the type of annoying person that can tell you that the girl in the background glass has just been magically refilled in the split second scene :D my partner hates it.

However I would of reported it, they send you a reminder. You get in your car practically every day it's their in big black numbers the date it runs out. I can also tell you when my MOT runs out and when I need to renew my insurance.

He is irresponsible.

You have no idea if he's insured or not.

You can't insure your car without tax, but if you already have insurance when the tax runs out, your insurance is not invalidated.

Feel free to report him (to people who already know anyway as it's all automated) if you really have nothing better to do (perhaps you need to find yourself a hobby) but posting here gloating about it makes you sound a bit nasty and smug.
