To have reported neighbour

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 19:16

Tax disc on his second car, they have a main car and a works van, ran out at the end of January.
This car is mainly parked on the road, as is the van and other car, they have room on their drive for one car,but don't use it.
I have now seen him driving the car with out of date tax 4 times now. I reported him on the DVLA website this afternoon.

Did check before I reported. Nope, I have both my cars up the drive, so parking wars. No real back story to our relationship.
Would it have made a difference if I'd stated in the Op that he's a real nasty bastard, parks in front of my house, abuses the neighbours Etc Would responses be different? If in deed that was the case.

I don't get what's mean about it - if the neighbour's car is taxed it's not a problem, is it

It's not the OP's problem for sure. I think a lot of people have had a "hiatus" without realising it - I know I have...

Why would you go down the "reporting to the stasi" route without speaking to the neighbour first unless there was bad blood?

OP hasn't said there are problems with the neighbour which could be taken as an indication that she's the problem neighbour!

So OP - why didn't you mention it to him first?

Genuinely Curious....

Manticlimatic- I presume the records haven't been updated yet, I just checked my car and it does say 'if the vehicle has recently been relicensed these details may not be updated on the vehicle record'.

However, in the OP's case the tax expired end of Jan not Feb so this shouldn't apply and the DVLA's records should be updated.

Yes, because that would explain your rather strange first action. Surely the time & effort taken to report him online was more than the time & effort required to say "your tax disc has run out, be careful it's all computerised & they'll nab you!"......

So you think it's nice neighbourly behaviour to report someone for something that is pretty easy to overlook, rather than tell them you've spotted it and wait and see what they do about it?

This isn't really compatible with doing a few cash jobs on the side- how many people can honestly say that if their tax reminder went astray in the post, they'd have any idea when the renewal was due?

Youve too much time on your hands why do you even care ?

When my paper tax disc failed to arrive the DVLA told me not to worry about it - it was on the system that I'd got a new one and they said that was all that mattered.

A whole month untaxed is not 'a little hiatus'. I admit that one time, I did forget to tax my car. In my defence, the reminder letter arrived very shortly before I went into labour, so got cast to one side and buried under other paperwork when we got home. We realised on the first day of the next month, so I renewed tax online. We hadn't used the car while it was untaxed but it was a total of hours not weeks.

Govt are mooting getting rid if the disks as you don't need them as it's recorded online.

They are unnecessary.

Report
Pumpkinpositive · 01/03/2014 20:10

Is this a reverse? Did they report you for benefit fraud or something? Grin

I would only report them if

  1. I hated them

  2. They were genuinely endangering others through their neglect

  3. They had ignored fair warning

OP hasn't given any reason for reporting them as opposed to gently reminding them. Could have stuck an unsigned note through their door if you didn't fancy the direct approach.

bearbehind I know exactly when my tax is due (hence why in my previous post I realised on the first day of the next month even though I couldn't remember getting the reminder in the panic of my waters breaking), and MOT and insurance for that matter. It's not hard to check, it's printed in big numbers on the tax disc.

My husband also knows when his tax is due.

In most cases it's easy as it's roughly the anniversary of when you bought the car.

It's illegal to drive around without road tax. I checked, he has none.
Yes, I could have spoken to him, but I didn't.

Nobody needs a reminder from a neighbour, a letter is sent from DVLA when the tax runs out.

He may have forgotten to put the fresh disc on display, who knows?

Report
francesdrake · 01/03/2014 20:11

Do you also go around Tesco's car park, checking to see who in there might be driving on an expired disc? In case anyone drives out of there and causes an accident? Because otherwise I'm waiting for the massive drip feed about how his articulated lorry has been parked on your begonias for the past seven months.

My dh forgot to put his tax disc on for six weeks, it was taxed but wasn't displaying a disc. The garage pointed it out when he took it in for repair.Maybe your neighbour has done the same paid online and then forgot to put it in the car when it came through the post. I would have reminded him rather than report him tbh.

But him not having road tax doesnt effect you in any way thank goodness i have nice neighbors you are really out of order.

Rinky - as someone who has been hit by an uninsured driver, I thank you for reporting him.

Report
RiverTam · 01/03/2014 20:15

for goodness" sake! Has no-one read the bit about how an untaxed car has no valid insurance? Of course it matters if he's driving it around. Or have you all got loads of cash to spare should your car be the one to be hit by an uninsured car?

If he has paid for the tax then no harm done, no-one's going to bother him about it (unless they remind him to put the disk in the car). But if he hasn't then I have zero sympathy for him, or for anyone else else 'forgets' to get their car taxed. You have 10 days grace to get it sorted, which is plenty.

You're not big on detail are you?

This feels like a "think outside the box" riddle.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 01/03/2014 20:17

If he has no tax disc he's not insured!

He's a liability and breaking the law if this is the case.

Why are posters attacking OP, if he's a git why wouldn't she dob him in.?

Yes, I could have spoken to him, but I didn't

But why? It seems weirdly nasty to do this for no good reason!

Report
Goldencity1 · 01/03/2014 20:22

The thing is, if you have no tax disc, the police don't need to actually catch you driving to issue the fine. If you don't renew, then the fine is automatically sent from the dvla. So no need to report, the dvla already know. It doesn't matter if you have driven the car, or left it parked, without a valid tax disc or sorn, then you automatically get the fine.

It's not really a riddle.
He and his wife are very mouthy, especially towards the elderly neighbours, more so to them, but they also give it out to rest of neighbours too. So he would not be approachable to mention this, would probably react like some on here, rather than see it as an issue.
They cause parking problems for them, not for me, and when it's mentioned to them, they ensure their parking is as annoying as possible-blocking access, making it hard to walk Past on he pavement.
I didn't want to include that in the OP, I wanted to see how people felt, and obviously driving round without tax, yes I checked, is not an issue for most.
