To have reported neighbour

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 19:16

Tax disc on his second car, they have a main car and a works van, ran out at the end of January.
This car is mainly parked on the road, as is the van and other car, they have room on their drive for one car,but don't use it.
I have now seen him driving the car with out of date tax 4 times now. I reported him on the DVLA website this afternoon.

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 21:28

What times did they drive the car Rinky? Morning? Afternoon? How many miles would you estimate they had driven it?
Secret Detective Rinky's logbook checked and updated?

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 21:30

The guy has 3 cars and one of them has an expired tax disc, wouldn't most normal people give him the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with those people asking why the fuck OP posted.

If she was asking whether or not to report him then fair enough but to post when it's all done is smug and conceited.

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 21:31

Why do people think the op is out of order? No tax disc means it is illegal to drive on road, which means they are breaking the law.

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 21:33

Olympic, I really have no idea, would love to be smug and gloaty and tell you though Grin
To me it's simple, you get a reminder to tax your car. You make sure you have a valid MOT and do it, you have 3 weeks or so to pay. If you don't, you leave it off road and don't drive it.
That's the rule for everyone who owns a car and wants to drive it/park it in a public highway. You don't do t, then you are breaking the law and there is a system for reporting those who don't.

I did something, I asked if it was unreasonable, I have a mixture of answers. Can't really see why that's attention seeking

I didn't say asking was attention seeking. But your approach on this thread - ie, lack of detail, failure to elaborate on reasons why or respond to questions from other posters, stonewalling, etc - strikes me as such.

redbinneo · 01/03/2014 21:35

Poppy67 - quiet.
I just wonder what other laws these people think that it is acceptable to break. No tax is obviously OK, how about no insurance or no MOT? Is that OK as well, how about speeding with no tax or insurance near a school?

TidyDancer · 01/03/2014 21:35

I haven't got the impression the OP is smug at all. Yes, she could've spoken to the neighbour first, but it sounds like she had good reason not to. If he's generally a nasty person, then direct contact may not be advisable.

Bottom line, if the neighbour was driving legally, the OP wouldn't have anything to report him for. I'm afraid I can't see anything actually wrong in what the OP has done. You can judge for what you perceive the motives for her report to be, but I can't judge her for what she did.

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 21:35

As for the comments about why I posted after I had done it, then to be fair most comments on AIU are posted after an event has happened.

OP posts:
olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 21:35

Poppy I think it's unreasonable to:
Report a neighbour like that.
Post on here afterwards-and not seeing how that could come across as gloaty.
KNOW that the tax disc on neighbour's car is out of date. How did they know? ( shudder)
Know how many times the neighbour has been out in it. That is awful!Presume the neighbours don't have a tax disc
Presume that they have information the DVLA don't have.

Twitchy curtains syndrome at the very least.

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 01/03/2014 21:37

Busy body.

Karma .

What a lovely neighbour you are not

Nnnnnnn · 01/03/2014 21:37

Redbinneo - I didn't say it was acceptable - I spend my life enforcing the law as it happens. I pay my taxes and believe everyone else should too.

If he really has no tax, the DVLA already know about it and will be dealing with it appropriately.

But this thread isn't about tax/no tax is it, this is about the OP trying to get one over on a neighbour he/she dislikes and then immediately thinking "ooh I must post this on mumsnet" - sounds smug and attention seeking to me - just my opinion.

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 21:38

If someone drives without tax deliberately they really aren't going to give a fuck if a neighbour highlights their lack of tax disc.

If the op walks along her road she may have noticed. Not a big deal.

redbinneo · 01/03/2014 21:39

Have we had a Netmums invasion tonight, or are all the bingo halls closed?

Nicknacky · 01/03/2014 21:40

Red, you haven't seemed to acknowledge you were wrong about the insurance issue......

waltermittymissus · 01/03/2014 21:44

This is such a non-issue I'm baffled as to why you're posting.

Why do you want people's opinions??

You've already reported, you don't care what other people think...it's completely pointless!

Greydog · 01/03/2014 21:51

If he cares so little about his tax, is this car insured/mot'd? It's more than a month out of date. The rest of you are paying for this man. would it be Ok if he didn't pay his taxes or committed benefit fraud? YANBU to report him

bishbashboosh · 01/03/2014 21:57

I personally think this is mean and I would be afraid to do this did to my dead if bad karma and what goes around comes around etc

You've probably wasted your time too they'll have probably renewed if and got it in their glove box

Maybe they're not the type if people to have time to get it out or remember

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 21:57

Yes- when someone is genuinely questioning whether they have done the right thing or not. Your motive seems to be no more than hoisting your bosom and clutching your pearls in a self righteous manner and expecting others to condone your underhand, sneaky behaviour.

HunterWellies · 01/03/2014 21:58

On balance then I think yanbu.

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 21:58

All is quiet in Front Street, Basildon. Suddenly a curtain twitches as the sound of a small van is heard starting up outside in the street. Behind the curtains, a notebook is grabbed quickly.
Time noted the watcher thinks, I must post this on Mumsnet later, after the bingo.

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 22:04

Hunter, yes, the general concencus seems to think IWBU. Fair enough, that's why I posted.
Olympic, your views seem to be skewed, from what you said regarding your own situation, hence the unnecessary remarks. Maybe you're the one with a chip on you shoulder regarding your own situation.

Oh, a heartfelt show of remorse- not!

You sound even more smug now the consensus thinks you were BU.

Karma is a wonderful thing.

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 22:10

OP, you were not being unreasonable in reporting your neighbour. He was committing a crime. He's the twat, not you.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 01/03/2014 22:11

olympic your post is twattish.

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 22:14

Yes it was meant to be.
