...to think 'partner' means a cohabiting partner, not just boyfriend.

This has twice caused major confusion recently.

I realise most of the time it doesn't really matter much, but referring to someone you are 'just' dating as your partner is confusing wrong.

Isn't it?

So what should I call my partner then? considering we have lived together for 35 years?

NearTheWindymill · 28/02/2014 21:36

Snogpot Grin

usualsuspect33 · 28/02/2014 21:42

My beau?

coffeeslave · 28/02/2014 21:42

Bitoutofpractise, I agree with you.

As for my, I live with my boyfriend. We co-own a house, are 37 & 42 and are boyfriend & girlfriend. It's what we choose to use!

NearTheWindymill · 28/02/2014 21:46

Ah usual when you've been together 35 years I think you can call them what you like really

coffeeslave · 28/02/2014 21:47

OP - if you're confused about what someone means by DP, you could always.... ask them?

fideline · 28/02/2014 22:45

Why would you not call him your partner usual?

I'm liking ' snogpot', I might promote the OH to snogpot. Grin

Coffee interviewing people is what I was trying to avoid. I am not an immigration officer.

Because I'm not gay, Fid.

It's a gay thing according to Super and her social circle.

fideline · 28/02/2014 23:54

Oh right yes, I see. Missed that particular bizarre assertion post.

Bit limiting isn't it?

Snogpot Grin I love it!
I call my other half, my husband/hubby (even though I know that pees some women off). I don't judge other peoples couple status but it does annoy me when health professionals say "oh is this your partner..." and I say "husband...." and they continue with "partner" because I don't like the term personally. Maybe I'm one of them annoying/proud married women? Confused

*Btw genuine question - My stepsister is marrying her girlfriend soon (exciting times ahead Grin) but once they are married do I call my stepsister's gf her "partner" or "wife"? I'm asking on here as I would feel a bit daft asking her in person Blush

Grennie · 01/03/2014 00:52

She is your stepsister's wife on marriage

YankeeMum8 · 01/03/2014 01:04

I can see it in a non cohabbing way amoungst same sex couples. In opposite sex couples I generally think of em shacking up Grin

caruthers · 01/03/2014 01:06

I have a Wife and she has a Husband.

Maybe it's a little old fashioned but that's how we like it.

usualsuspect33 · 01/03/2014 01:13

Yes it is old fashioned.

I'm not shacking up either. I'm in a committed relationship. So stick that up your smug married pipe.

caruthers · 01/03/2014 01:14

I'm not judging you for shacking up.

But technically my Wife and I are Man and Wife.

usualsuspect33 · 01/03/2014 01:16

And?

Is your relationship better than mine then?

caruthers · 01/03/2014 01:17

Did I say that?

Because I have a Wife and my Wife has a husband we're in the wrong?

You can call your relationship what you want it doesn't and wont affect me one little bit.

usualsuspect33 · 01/03/2014 01:20

That's ok then.

I will continue to call my partner my partner.

We can shack up for a few more years.

caruthers · 01/03/2014 01:22

You seem defensive and overly bothered about how other people define their relationships.

Just enjoy yours and allow others to do likewise.

usualsuspect33 · 01/03/2014 01:26

I will .Shacking up is a bit dismissive though

Grennie · 01/03/2014 01:28

My Wife and I, may nowdays be two women.

-------

I used the term you yourself used.

So you dismissed yourself didn't you?

What upsets you so much that someone identifies as married when they are?

I said nothing about your circumstances did I?

caruthers · 01/03/2014 01:30

My Wife and I, may nowdays be two women

This is absolutely true and so it should be if they identify themselves as such.

Grennie · 01/03/2014 01:33

If they got married since the 29th of March 2014, two women are legally Wife and Wife; just as if a man and woman get married, they are legally Husband and Wife. What people call themselves is of course, up to them.

usualsuspect33 · 01/03/2014 01:33

I was using a term someone else used.
