To say I didn't receive this item??

DH ordered a camera, a very pricey camera.. ( well, to me! I don't know about cameras, it's almost 1400 pounds. Annoying, but that's a whole other thread!)

Today I've been home all day, as DD1 doesn't have nursery, my plans fell through and DD2's rash looks horrific) No one knocked on my door.. No one rang the bell. I haven't hoovered or anything loud, and I have a dog who usually barks at both of these things.

I go outside to get my charger from the car and there is a box on my doorstep.

It's the camera.

Clearly unsigned for, no attempt even made.

I do live on a lovely street, but there is a school here so lots of foot traffic. Anyone could have taken it.

It's over a thousand pounds!!

I am very very tempted to tell them I didn't get it and just cancel my order...?

Wow! How many virtuous people can we squeeze onto one thread.
OP. I get what you are saying. The company is doing itself no favours using a courier/ postal service that does this. I would phone them up and tell them that this £1000+ item was dumped on your doorstep. Make a song and dance about how a less honest person could have left them out of pocket by claiming not to have received the goods.
Give them a lecture about it and don't order from them again.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/02/2014 21:05

Are you suggesting virtue is a bad thing, MsLT?

OwlCapone · 28/02/2014 07:05

Or is she suggesting that not stealing stuff is virtuous rather than just basic common decency?

firesidechat · 28/02/2014 07:32

And no - fleur is not the only honest person on this thread. I would not lie in order to get goods for free - in fact I once went back into Sainsburys to pay for a small chocolate bar that ended up under my handbag in the trolley and got overlooked by me at the till.

Implying that everyone who has said they wouldn't do this, is lying, is just nasty.

Exactly this ^

I once totally confused a shop assistant in New York by pointing out that she had given me too much change. I think she put it down to us being English and a bit eccentric.

Some people's first instinct is honesty, others not so much.

curiousgeorgie · 28/02/2014 07:55

Isn't it frustrating when someone adds their two pence worth without reading the thread...

OP posts:
PastPerfect · 28/02/2014 08:10

SDTG - "some people" were offended? Really?!

Aeroflotgirl · 28/02/2014 09:40

Op is not stealing, the courier left her camera on the doorstep without even knocking if leaving a card. I would open it up charge it and see if it works. Phone up the place your dh got it from and complain

CocktailQueen · 28/02/2014 09:42

NO, of course don't pretend you didn't receive it. But I agree, it is madness to leave it there unattended and un-signed for.

Contact the company you bought it from and tell them. Escalate if necessary. You can bet if that was done to you, it will be done to other people. Who may not be honest.

Aeroflotgirl · 28/02/2014 09:44

Just read the bottom line of your op, that's wrong, you can't do that. I would complain to the company, what you could do is not open it, insist tgey send you a new one and send the old one back. The weather is atrocious here, if left in the rain it could be damaged. If it's amazon tgey are usually really good.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2014 09:50

Some people don't like being called liars, PastPerfect. Is that really a surprise to you?

curiousgeorgie · 28/02/2014 09:58

No one called you a liar... It was a joke.

Professionally offended indeed!

OP posts:
OwlCapone · 28/02/2014 10:00

I find it somewhat amusing when people throw in the phrase "professionally offended" as if that somehow detracts from what was being said.

as a newcomer to the was it/wasn't it obviously a joke that people were lying about not taking the camera I would like to say:

It was bloody obviously a joke. The winking smilie....the complete ridiculousness of it possibly being true...they all lead you there....

Feminine · 28/02/2014 10:49

Your rubbish title didn't give any indication of 'joking'

You backtracked op

If posters had encouraged you to keep it, you would have run with that

so bloody obvious

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2014 10:50

  • it was a joke that didn't work, curiousgeorgie. You knew you were being funny, but it did not read that way on here, to people who don't have crystal balls can't see inside your head. Even the winking smiley can be misinterpreted - I saw it as a conspiritorial wink between the OP and the only person on the thread she thought was being honest (the rest of us being liars, apparently). IceBeing didn't see it that way, but that doesn't mean it was obvious to everyone.

OwlCapone - I agree with you, about the misuse of the Professionally Offended epithet. IMO it is used to attempt to suppress opinions that another person does not like - "I don't like what you are saying, so I will call you names to shut you up/make you go away" - such a nice tactic. Hmm

curiousgeorgie · 28/02/2014 10:57

Feminine, you're wrong. I wrong the no post after the first reply, you can tell by the times, which was just a question.

So obvious. But carry on..

OP posts:
Feminine · 28/02/2014 11:01

I went back and re-read your original posts.

no Wink 's arrived for quite a while...

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt then.

I am very very tempted to tell them I didn't get it and just cancel my order...?
Most people took that as face value, assuming you wanted views on the morality/legality whatever, of doing just that.

You only took the "I was JOKING !!!!!!" line when you didn't get an instant chorus of "of course you should, screw the bastards before they screw you".
Do what you want, your "jokes" are tediously unfunny.

curiousgeorgie · 28/02/2014 11:14

Molly... The 'I was joking' was about me saying that another poster was the only one here that was honest.

I was tempted, that was true. But I immediately said I wasn't going to do it, but that the situation was ridiculous.

I suggest you read the thread and repost?

OP posts:
curiousgeorgie · 28/02/2014 11:15

Actually, do what you want.

But your inaccuracies are a bit silly when it's all here in black and white.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 28/02/2014 11:22

The same thing happened to me. My DH ordered a Playstation from Amazon and it was just left on the doorstep, even though I was in the house at the time, so they obviously never bothered ringing the bell.

It did half cross my mind to say I hadn't got it but I was never actually going to do it. I did contact Amazon though and tell them what happened so they could contact the courier company as it could easily have been stolen.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 28/02/2014 11:27

I would ask to see the signature to see if it has been forged and then I'd complain about it being left on doorstep.

PastPerfect · 28/02/2014 11:30

STDG yes it is a surprise to me that anyone would read this thread, surmise they had been called a liar and then been offended.

Were you offended?

BeCool · 28/02/2014 11:30

you are trying to create a problem when there isn't one. Camera ordered, camera delivered, camera safely received.

And if it was stolen from your doorstep and there was no signature you wouldn't be liable - the delivery company would be.
