To say I didn't receive this item??

DH ordered a camera, a very pricey camera.. ( well, to me! I don't know about cameras, it's almost 1400 pounds. Annoying, but that's a whole other thread!)

Today I've been home all day, as DD1 doesn't have nursery, my plans fell through and DD2's rash looks horrific) No one knocked on my door.. No one rang the bell. I haven't hoovered or anything loud, and I have a dog who usually barks at both of these things.

I go outside to get my charger from the car and there is a box on my doorstep.

It's the camera.

Clearly unsigned for, no attempt even made.

I do live on a lovely street, but there is a school here so lots of foot traffic. Anyone could have taken it.

It's over a thousand pounds!!

I am very very tempted to tell them I didn't get it and just cancel my order...?

Confused Foxes' idea sounds like a total bloody rigmarole, why tell a load of pointless lies? If you come unstuck with them you'll look like a twat. Just tell the camera company you didn't sign for it and it was left on your doorstep, that'll get the couriers into plenty of (deserved) trouble.

Inertia · 27/02/2014 16:23

I wouldn't say I hadn't received it because that would be immoral and illegal. However, I would do what Foxes suggests and ask to see the tracking history and signature, because it was never signed for. The courier company need to know whether their drivers are following procedure, and the camera company need to know if their courier is not reliable because this could become expensive for them.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:23

Fleur - the only honest person on the thread Wink

OP posts:
curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:24

And I get the irony of that! Grin

Inertia · 27/02/2014 16:24

Not the story about neighbours though- be honest, but say that it's not acceptable.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:25

MadBusLady - because I'm sure if I call and say it was on my doorstep not a lot would be done.

I am shocked that you even thought about lying about receiving this camera, stealing it, and risking the delivery driver's job! No, he should not have left it on your doorstep, but that does not excuse that sort of dishonesty.

MadBusLady · 27/02/2014 16:25

Can't believe there are actual people in the world who think like this, it must be knackering keeping track of your lies and trying to get one over on everyone else the whole time. Had an ex who was like this and he was also an abusive twat.

Bowlersarm · 27/02/2014 16:27

You don't deserve a pat on the back for being honest at all.

Quite the opposite. You seriously considered stealing the camera.

Beastofburden · 27/02/2014 16:27

Well I would tell them, and say that so far as you can see it isnt damaged- because somewhere, someone may have had something nicked in a similar way and is trying to make herself believed. They need to know this goes on.

But I wouldn't pretend it never arrived. It's not a victimless crime.

MiserableCowWhenUpTheDuff · 27/02/2014 16:28

We run a small mail order business that cannot afford to use Royal Mails signed for service for every order that we send out and the amount of people that say 'it wasn't delivered' is unbelievable...

The company you bought the camera off will be the ones that get shafted because they have to use one of the cheaper couriers!

People like you that steal or even consider it disgust me.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:28

Bowlersarm - I was responding to another poster.

Sarcasm?

Not familiar with it?

OP posts:
MadBusLady · 27/02/2014 16:28

That's their problem then. They'll lose a delivery for real one day and the courier will be liable, not the customer if they haven't signed.

Hazelbrowneyes · 27/02/2014 16:28

I run a company and send out goods all the time.

Would I prefer a customer to tell me they hadn't received the goods and steal another item from me - you can only claim through couriers insurance if no signature has been provided and you have to pay an excess. There's a high chance here that the driver has forged it.

OR

Would I rather the customer contacted me directly, explained the situation and allowed me to contact the courier to discuss it with them?

Now let me think...

Hmm
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/02/2014 16:30

And no - fleur is not the only honest person on this thread. I would not lie in order to get goods for free - in fact I once went back into Sainsburys to pay for a small chocolate bar that ended up under my handbag in the trolley and got overlooked by me at the till.

Implying that everyone who has said they wouldn't do this, is lying, is just nasty.

Orlea · 27/02/2014 16:30

Don't pretend it was nicked or not delivered! Phone both the company it came from and the delivery company to make them aware that the delivery driver didn't do his job properly, and check it carefully for damage/missing parts. They may tell you not to open it in case there is damage caused by the delivery.

I had something similar recently, where an item didn't show up but I had an email saying it had been delivered. It had been marked as delivered and signed for by the courier. Had a lot of hassle getting the company to speak to their couriers to finally admit that it hadn't been delivered or signed for (no paperwork, unsurprisingly, as no one was home to sign any paperwork!), and in the meantime both were implying that it was my fault for agreeing that they could leave it at our back door where it could have been nicked (I hadn't - more non-existent paperwork) and worse, that I might have received it and be trying it on... How do you prove you haven't got it stashed somewhere?? Turns out it was nicked from the depot and the delivery driver was lazy filling in paperwork and updating the system. I got my goods but it was quite worrying as there was a lot of money at stake, but you can't blame them for suspecting that people try it on... so please don't!

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:31

Madbuslady - but it would be interesting to see if it has been forged which is why I think Foxes idea is great... They'll definitely look into it rather than maybe being a bit busy and just apologising because its not that big a deal if it didn't cause a problem..

OP posts:
mypocketsarevide · 27/02/2014 16:31

I believe in Karma coming to bite you in the arse if you do this..it's very tempting but don't do it.It's not worth it.

Floggingmolly · 27/02/2014 16:32

No, fleur is not the only honest person on the thread, op. Hmm
It seriously wouldn't enter into most people's heads to do something like this.

Floggingmolly · 27/02/2014 16:33

Oh, x posted.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:34

Just to clarify, I won't steal it. I'm sure it has a serial number or something and DH wants to use it for work...

But I am incensed that such a valuable item can be left so unsafely on my doorstep... When I was clearly home!

OP posts:
DidoTheDodo · 27/02/2014 16:35

In my book, there'd be no difference in what you suggest to going into a shop and slipping the camera under your coat. Both ways are theft. Both ways are wrong. Both ways mean that the price of everything goes up for all of us.

I am astonished that you would seriously consider doing this. And even more astonished that you posted all about it on a public forum.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:36

Dido - I didn't say I was going to steal it. I said I was tempted.

It's very annoying.

OP posts:
ScarletStar · 27/02/2014 16:36

Was the delivery company Yodel by any chance? They are atrocious! I used to work for a company who employed them and my job was to track parcels for customers. They repeatedly lost parcels or dumped them in wheelie bins etc. One time a customer was missing a wine order and when I tracked it online, where did the driver say it was? 'Posted' - yes apparently he posted a case of wine through the letterbox. Fucking useless! If it was them I'd be tempted too although for your own karma please don't do it.

curiousgeorgie · 27/02/2014 16:40

I've never stolen anything in my life..

(actually, not quite true.. I did steal a ghostbusters colouring book when I was a small child, but my parents gave it back! Wink)

I won't steal the camera, I promise.

I just think that delivery like this is terrible, which is more what my post was about! Smile
