to be perfectly happy in my own company?

Stinklebell · 24/02/2014 15:31

because apparently it's "weird"

I'm not madly extrovert, not a hermit either, but I am perfectly happy pottering around by myself.

I work part time from home, and I've just had a very nice couple of hours with Sky+ and my ironing pile

DH is the opposite, loves company, always organising get togethers and nights out - even stuff like a Saturday night takeaway turns into a mad social gathering and sometimes I just find it a bit too much.

My DH went away with our kids a couple of weeks ago, and a friend was all "oh, you can't stay home on your own, I'll be over Friday with some wine, we'll go shopping Saturday then we'll go out Saturday night". It was lovely of her, but she didn't quite get that actually, I am just fine tootling around alone. I like mooching around the shops on my own, I like chilling out with a film or something on my own. I don't want to stand outside the school gates for an hour every morning chatting, or go somewhere for coffee or meet up for lunch every day

I don't mind friends over, I don't mind meeting friends for a coffee, I just don't want to do it all the time. I like my own space, I like my own company, I'm not bored or lonely, I just don't want to be surrounded by people all the time.

It's not unreasonable, right?

It's definitely not. I love the peace and quiet of 'me time': my DH and DC are so full-on and loud. I like pootling around, daydreaming, reading, maybe a bit of crochet and tv that I want to watch...bliss! The time just to get lost in my head is invaluable.

ahlahktuhflomp · 24/02/2014 15:42

Of course YANBU, I'm the same

flumposie · 24/02/2014 15:45

Me too!

InTheRedCorner · 24/02/2014 15:47

Yanbu being alone is my first choice.

Stinklebell · 24/02/2014 15:49

Thanks!

It seems to be such a big problem for everyone else, maybe I am the odd one Grin

A friend called earlier and asked if I wanted to meet for a coffee before we did the school pick up - it's Monday, the kids have just gone back after half term and I was really looking forward to a quiet afternoon with Midsomer Murders Blush so I said thanks, but no.

She thinks I'm depressed.

And me! We're not all extroverts, though it may sometimes seem like those who shout the loudest are bound to 'win'. In their own eyes, anyway!

SnowyMouse · 24/02/2014 15:50

YANBU, I feel the same.

Jinty64 · 24/02/2014 15:51

YANBU. I am completely happy with my own company.

sonlypuppyfat · 24/02/2014 15:51

I love my own company. Nothing wrong with you at all.

UptoapointLordCopper · 24/02/2014 15:52

YANBU! I crave my own company. Grin

Mouthfulofquiz · 24/02/2014 15:53

I can totally see where you're coming from so YANBU.
I don't need to see people all the time and I'm happy at home doing things when I'm not at work. I have friends who NEED to see people all the time so we've had to work out a balance!

Lotkinsgonecurly · 24/02/2014 15:55

I'm a bit of an extrovert but love my own company!!! Bliss

supermariossister · 24/02/2014 15:55

me too. there is nothing better than a day that I can do the school run and just do whatever it is I feel like doing then. I am happiest when in the kitchen with music on trying out recipes or watching criminal minds Grin. these two do not involve company. I think some people just don't need it as much

sillymillyb · 24/02/2014 15:57

I love to be alone too, it's great Grin

Tiredtomybones · 24/02/2014 15:59

YANBU. Op, I could have written your post. I'm exactly the same.

SlitheryAnne · 24/02/2014 15:59

I love being alone. It's heaven!

Stinklebell · 24/02/2014 15:59

Well, if I'm weird, we're all weird together - hurrah Grin

My neighbour is always hassling to meet up and walk our dogs together "for the company". I actually really like going off over the fields on my own, I sometimes take my camera, I can get lost in my daydreams and not have to make small talk.

Friday night alone with a film and a glass of wine is bliss - I can watch Rock of Ages again and lust over Tom Cruise without people rolling their eyes and making sarcastic comments Blush

I do like company, but I like my own more

"oh, you can't stay home on your own, I'll be over Friday with some wine, we'll go shopping Saturday then we'll go out Saturday night". Aaaargh! It's the Shirley Valentine thing isn't it?

I love being on my own and struggle a bit during the school holidays - always looking for somewhere in the house to hide away

LimitedEditionLady · 24/02/2014 16:15

My dp says im weird because Im like this.I kind of think people who seem almost afraid of spending time alone with their own thoughts are a bit weird....

Dollslikeyouandme · 24/02/2014 16:18

Yanbu, I like my own company. It would probably take me a few days before I got bored or lonely.

I find time alone allows me to recharge.

I think you do have to be careful not to be too selfish with your time though and make time for friends and family.

RamblingRosieLee · 24/02/2014 16:18

I think being able to enjoy your own company is vital for healthy mental health.

shame as a society we dont err towards this

NeonMuffin · 24/02/2014 16:20

I like my own company as well. It's not that I dislike people or company, but I class myself as an introvert and I need alone time to recharge my batteries. Too much socialising actually makes me feel drained and tired.

Why do extroverts assume that everyone has to be like them?

TheWanderingUterus · 24/02/2014 16:30

Love being on my own, it's a real treat.

It's not boring or lonely and I am not shy or antisocial. I have plenty of interaction with others, just mostly on my terms and not theirs.

CrepeFoofette · 24/02/2014 16:45

I'm exactly the same. Natural introvert and prefer being alone - I do worry that people think I'm weird though! Confused

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 24/02/2014 16:48

My neighbour is always hassling to meet up and walk our dogs together "for the company". I actually really like going off over the fields on my own, I sometimes take my camera, I can get lost in my daydreams and not have to make small talk.

This would craze me. I love my dog walks. They're my me time. I get silently enraged if I bumped into somebody I know whilst I'm out with the dog.

Dh complains that I always come to bed late. It's because I'm downstairs enjoying the first bit of peace and bloody quiet I've had all day. Grin
