Solicitors will always try to mitigate for their clients, and 'family man' is pretty standard code for 'can't think of anything else to say but he has relatives somewhere'. It means nothing.

I'd say the fact that prisons are full to bursting has more to do with the sentencing.

Short of murder/manslaughter and financial/tax related crimes, don't most people end up with community/suspended sentences these days?

Punching someone in a nightclub as a one off probably isn't the sort of thing best punished with prison anyway.

It's my husband who was punched, the effects have been ridiculous. I know that this man has no remorse, I know that he finds this funny. He was basically caught because he was bragging about it. Sorry if that breaks Mumsnet rules. So angry I can't think straight.

It's why the NW community I used to live in rarely bothered the police with little trifles like that.
They sorted it out for themselves so as not to worry the judge with the stress of convicting a violent thug. If the law fails, vigilantes step in.

He obviously plead guilty, showed remorse and there are no previous convictions mentioned. Prison is there for punishment, segregation from society and rehabilitation. Im not saying what he did wasnt terrible,it was and he has been convicted.

He plead guilty at the eleventh hour because there was so much evidence against him.

The article doesn't describe exactly what happened. My dh knew straight away that his jaw was in pieces as a piece of bone was sticking into his mouth between two teeth. He collected himself and came home to me and our dd, like a real family man does, rather than risk further injury or getting himself into trouble.

Trouble is, our prisons can only take about 88,000 inmates.
All Governments in this country refuse to build any more prisons. So judges know that only the worst criminals can be in there iyswim.

Like I said clarkson, the way it would have worked in my area would be that the thug would have been jumped a few days later by a group, and battered.

Thanks everyone. The man is an oaf!! Believe it or not, I went to school with him, though we didn't really know each other and it doesn't seem to have had any bearing on his deciding to target my dh.

The comments on the article show how disgusted most people are with this sort of thing. I just hope that he reads them and takes some of them to heart rather than just as a big joke.
