Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

OP posts:

You're right ! I don't have this reaction but my grandmother does, she's violently ill after eating quorn. It's what it's made from that makes people react to it. So stay away. I listened to a radio four programme on it a few years ago, knew straight away that that's why my gran had been so Ill on a few occasions after eating it.

Uhplistrailer · 05/06/2015 12:57

My family is vegetarian and we eat quorn all the time.

However I know two different people that have relations to quorn, so it must be fairly common.

It's fungi so difficult to digest, which is why they don't reccomend IT in large amounts for children under 3

Bluepetra · 05/06/2015 13:13

I just had a Google and it's saying its a mold ! Shock couldn't find the Radio Four programme to put here as its so old now, but yeah it's definitely not mushrooms.

Metalguru · 05/06/2015 13:30

This is an old thread, resurrected not once but twice! But it caught my eye as I am violently sick after eating quorn, took me a while to pinpoint but definitely the quorn!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/06/2015 13:33

I have IBS and trying to test red meat as a trigger so I tried. Nope, tummy didnt like it at all. My tummy was most unimpressed.

Spitfire12 · 05/12/2016 22:24

My wife has eaten Quorn twice and been violently sick both times. Not eating again.

AntiHop · 05/12/2016 22:25

I eat it at least 2 or 3 times a week and have done for years. I've had no problems.

MitMopse · 05/12/2016 22:36

Yes projectile vomiting within a couple of hours! Learnt my lesson after the third try on that one. Yuck

thecatneuterer · 05/12/2016 22:36

I can tolerate (and even quite like) small amounts. But large amounts make me feel sick.

DailyMailCrap · 05/12/2016 22:37

The non vegan varieties contain egg so you need to cook it really thoroughly.

Also some people who have v mild egg/soya intolerances might not know it but Quorn contains a lot of both, so if you scoff it it will give you a bad belly.

I eat it everyday though and never had any problems

TwentyCups · 05/12/2016 22:38

I know loads of people who have a bad tummy when they eat quorn.
I'm a relatively new vegan (few months) but have been vegetarian most of my life before now. I don't eat quorn now (except the vegan chicken style pieces) as all the other products contain egg. I have noticed better digestion since changing to vegan - but don't know how much of this is due to quorn and how much is down to no dairy.

I really dislike it when people cook fake meat for omnivores as a way to trick them. Firstly because of the risks of intolerance to these products, and secondly because I think there are better meals to show people how tasty meat free meals can be!

Quorn is the fast freezer food of vegetarian life. You wouldn't try to convince a vegan of the joys of meat by showing them frozen chicken nuggets or reconstituted sausages would you?
If I cook for meat loving friends I tend to do something hearty like a veg packed bean chilli burrito with homemade guacamole. I do think too many people use products like quorn everyday, when really they are a junk food in their own way, and shouldn't be eaten all the time. I think over reliance on this stuff can put off a lot of people looking to cut out meat because it really isn't easily digested by so many of us!

rightsaidfrederickII · 05/12/2016 22:40

I'm absolutely fine with it, and so is everyone I know with the exception of one relative. For some reason, it really doesn't agree with her, and she can't touch the stuff at all (can't remember what happens exactly, but I think it's something gastric...)

ariana1 · 05/12/2016 22:42

I've spent a night in agony after having quorn chunks in a meal - the stomach ache was really intense but that was the extent of my symptoms,

Yoarchie · 05/12/2016 22:45

I will not touch the stuff.

It made me violently sick during pregnancy. Dh asked me to try it one more time a couple of years later and I had stomach pains and felt utterly shit that evening. I am not fussy or allergic to any foods and I love eating most things but quorn is awful stuff for me.

Weedsnseeds1 · 05/12/2016 22:45

A small number of people have an allergic reaction to the mycoprotein it's made of ( small numbers of people are allergic to lots of things). The standard version contains egg, a common allergen, however there is now a vegan version. The breaded products obviously contain gluten.

Ginkypig · 05/12/2016 23:04

Iv not read anything apart from your opening post.

I eat if quite regularly and have never had a problem.

The plain pieces are quite boring the mince isn't my thing, the sausages and the sausage rolls are horrible and I don't eat eggs so have never tried the scotch eggs but the rest of the stuff ranges from yummy to really yummy.

Like any other food my advice is try it and if you like it great but if you don't just don't have it again.

Rattusn · 05/12/2016 23:37

We are vegetarian, and have quorn regularly. No one in the family has ever been sick.

Sybys · 06/12/2016 00:49

I love quorn, really miss it now I live in Canada. Quorn chicken nuggets Grin

So much better than tofu and alike

Sybys · 06/12/2016 00:52

I should add that I believe the official reason it is banned in Canada is people having bad reactions to it.

Janey50 · 06/12/2016 01:07

Urgh I HATE this stuff. Which is a bit annoying as,although I'm not a vegetarian,I am not much of a meat-eater. I only like chicken and fish, and the only red meat I eat is bacon. But when I've had the misfortune to eat it,it hasn't made me ill. My grown-up DD doesn't mind the stuff, but can't eat it as it gives her thrush! I believe it's made from a type of fungus,so would imagine it contains yeast? Also,I saw part of a programme about 3 or 4 years ago about how it's made and produced. Now,if I hadn't already disliked the stuff, this would have managed to put me off it. I just remember great vats full of gallons of this pink/beige sludge, being pumped through vast pipes.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/12/2016 01:14

SPITFIRE. Why on earth would you revive a zombie thread about Quorn? Most odd.

I replied earlier in the thread (different name). I've stopped eating it, the 'gas' got a bit unreasonable 😂 and I figured it probably wasn't good for me.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/12/2016 01:16

Janey. I occasionally buy the Cauldron sausages, I like them. If you're near a Waitrose the Taifun Basil infused tofu is very, very good! (Just eat it like a cold meat, no need to cook it)

nevertoooldforindie · 06/12/2016 02:48

I ate quorn for years without issue. Then on a few different occasions I started to feel unwell before going to bed ending up in agony on the bathroom floor through the night. I would be drenched in sweat and had the horrible feeling of not knowing whether to vomit or poo. and can only compare the pain to childbirth (sorry if that sounds dramatic) plus foul smelling wind. following Dr appointments I was diagnosed as colic, suspected gallstones or possible diverticulitis. I started a food diary and it turned out to be quorn confirmed months later when my mam made me some in error thinking it was soya not quorn. I have no idea why I developed a bad reaction to it.

whyohwhy000 · 06/12/2016 05:58

If you are allergic to any kind of fungus or fungus-type product then you will have a bad reaction to Quorn.

Sandsnake · 06/12/2016 06:08

Yes! Had it three times and each time got worse - first time feeling a bit 'ick' to last time having to take a day off with stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea. Had red, itchy skin too. Haven't had it since...
