Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

No problem at all here - we eat loads of it and have done for years.

blondefriend · 09/02/2014 14:16

Sorry I didn't mean to criticize people using Quorn occasionally as their meal. I was agreeing with a previous poster about using Quorn as the veggie option in schools. I work in a school and every day the veggie option is either Quorn or cheese based. Once a week maybe but there are so many veggie-protein sources. Why don't schools/hospitals etc use those instead?

Onelittlebugbear · 09/02/2014 14:33

I ate it for years and then started to get hives, thought it was caused by our new Guinea pig, got rid of the pig but the hives carried on.
Got pregnant with ds and had terrible morning sickness and didnt eat anything much for months. Ate quorn again for the first time in about five months when pregnant and immediate horrific reaction. Covered in hives, violently sick, stomach cramps, lips swollen, pulse racing. Went to the dr who confirmed it was an allergic reaction and it can only have been to the quorn, my pulse was still up days later and I was exhausted and breathless. I haven't touched it since.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2014 18:33

Ate it nearly daily for 15 years with no problems. Took a food diary to sort out what was causing my vomiting/cramps/shakes/headaches/two day recovery. I get the same on tofu/TVP so assume it's a soy thing. This is a cumulative allergy, so it actually means I can eat small amounts (say, TVP sausages once a fortnight) with no problems. Haven't touched Quorn in years though. Once, it was so bad that I hadn't even finished my dinner before projectile puking.

BurnThisDiscoDown · 09/02/2014 19:55

It makes DH violently sick a couple of hours after eating it. The first time it happened we thought it was a coincidence, but it's happened at least 3 times since.

MummaMouse · 09/02/2014 20:09

Sickness and stomach cramps. And feeling like crap.

namechangeobv · 09/02/2014 20:15

Another person who get bloating and cramping and I am not allergic/sensitive to ANYTHING.

Except that 'alternative to cream' stuff. Can't remember what it's called. Which makes me think that must have something in it which no other foodstuff has Shock

Just stumbled across this thread when googling 'vomiting and quorn'. Usually have a stomach of steel but twice have been violently sick after eating quorn mince!!!

fishdishwish · 27/01/2015 22:35

I've been veggie for almost 20 years and can't stomach - burning indigestion and an urge to be sick, though I'm usually OK once I've actually thrown.

I'm fine with any other foodstuff, including all the other meat substitutes.

RaggyAnnie · 28/01/2015 00:18

A good clear out the next day Wink

KissingPotion · 28/01/2015 06:50

Have used Quorn for years here, neither me or family ever had any problems.

IDismyname · 28/01/2015 06:57

Oh gawd. Never had Quorn, but never want to eat it either. Am allergic to eggs, mushrooms and fungi/ mould as they're in the same family.

I'd have d & v within 10 mins of eating it.

ChippingInLatteLover · 28/01/2015 07:00

I get 'light' indigestion almost immediately. I could wind power a rocket the next day, but nothing more serious than that.

I like it, and it's a reasonable form of protein for a non egg eating vegetarian, but I try not to eat it as I'm sure the amount of 'ingredients' and level of processing really isn't good for you.

Ilovehamabeads · 28/01/2015 07:11

I started a thread last week about using quorn mince, and responses similar to these seriously put me off trying it! I did buy some quorn sausages in the end though and had no ill effects Smile (and they were really nice!)

bigbluestars · 28/01/2015 07:17

Horrible food- highly processed, it is a mould grown in steel vats in a highly industrial setting. It's also full of purines and not a natural foodstuff.
I wouldn't feed it to my dog.

laughingmyarseoff · 28/01/2015 08:28

I ate it over several days once and it gave me bad diahorreah and wind and a rash. If I have infrequently it's tolerable. I have an allergy to the three big antibiotic groups and mould makes me breathless and sneeze. I now opt for lentils instead, with a small bit.of meat mince, much better for me. I would try it on a Friday.

MmeGuillotine · 28/01/2015 09:34

I ate it happily for years before having a reaction (severe and horribly painful bloating) about eight years ago after eating the Quorn ham slices. I gave Quorn up for ages but then started eating it again last year while doing Slimming World and have had no issues at all (touch wood). I still avoid the ham though, just in case!

I'm allergic to penicillin and thought that might be something to do with it, but I'm not sure now.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/01/2015 09:42

Never had a problem with it ever, and I was a veggie of many years. Sadly as it is not vegan (yet) can't eat it anymore.

If you dont fancy Quorn, Fry's do some very good fake meat, and vbites isn't too bad (in Holland and Barrett and possibly your local lentil weaving hippy health shop)

TheComfortOfStrangers · 28/01/2015 09:48

I Love quorn; we are a predominantly vege family, and all of us (including 8 and 5 YOs) eat it without problems.

dragdownthemoon · 28/01/2015 09:59

I bought the tesco own version and was ill for 3 days after eating it! I do have food sensitivities and IBS though.

HappydaysArehere · 28/01/2015 11:53

What about tofu? That I supposed to be good for you! Must say I am in need of a good recipe.

MTBMummy · 28/01/2015 12:52

Ive eaten it twice, both times I was violently ill, and had the shits the next day - never ever again.

Northofengland7 · 06/02/2015 20:18

Daughter and husband eat it with no side effects, son vomits violently, and I feel extremely ill, but manage not to be sick. Took us 2 meals to realise this, will not have it in the house again, and have warned son to tell anyone cooking a meal for him. We are not intolerant to anything else. Scary.

fluffymouse · 06/02/2015 20:32

I'm veggie and eat it very happily.

People can be allergic to all foods (Quorn is not a demon food!)
