to think MNers can be better than this

OPs may be ignorant, they maybe obtuse, they may be in the wrong and they may be trolls...

but how can dozens upon dozens of swearing riddled instructions to carry out intimate acts be considered a reasonable response?

For some people MN is the first forum they frequent. It is perfectly possible to post something that is innocently ignorant yet massively outrageous to MNers. Then suddenly you are being called all the names under the sun and told to fuck yourself preferably until dead? really?

Believe me it can be a massive shock that people say things on the internet they would never say in real life. It is possible to feel very very frightened and threatened by such an onslaught.

AIBU to think if the last 5 posters have covered the 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' angle then maybe you don't need to stick the boot in too?

The best case scenario is that the person on the other end is indeed a troll....in which case why are you giving them what they want?

I don't like the 'piling in'. I agree that it happens, but I do think it is more on AIBU than anywhere else - so I avoid AIBU. Very rarely do I read threads or post on there. Often when I have it has been because I didn't realise the thread was actually on there.

ummm LtEve just look up ^ Smile

I do agree that there is far more to like than dislike about the site - but I also think this kind of thread, every so often, does make us stop and think a bit more about the consequences of the way we post. I think I am far more aware of the damage a Troll can do now. I don't personally "invest more than I can afford to" in threads - so being reminded that Trolls can draw people in - in a damaging way - is something I need to remember when I get all gung-ho against Troll hunting. still think the site rules should be obeyed though

IceBeing · 07/02/2014 17:38

lteve I actually haven't seen a lot of anti-troll-hunting threads on here...maybe just missed them.

I spend much of my life pointing out things I think are stupid and having people say 'well yeah of course it is but you can't change it' and then annoyingly poking and prodding and pushing and arguing and well...mostly discovering people are right...but occasionally actually fecking changing things.

In the last year I got two major things changed around that effect everyone in my place of work....so I now I think I can change the whole world

I seriously think it might improve things and set the tone better if a thread pull down message also said something about troll hunting....

Grin Grin Grin

Ok, THAT is fucking hilarious!!!

I honestly thought we were in Site Stuff. Didn't have a clue we were in AIBU.

Bloody hell, what a dickhead Blush Grin

IceBeing · 07/02/2014 17:44

I definitely need a vent diagram.....

I was genuinely cross for about 6 months when my cousin failed to get high enough grades at A-level maths for his uni place....I cannot wrap my head around the idea that there is anyone who couldn't get an A at A-level maths if only it were taught properly...

This opinion makes me a total dickhead....I know it does...

but I can't shake it...I really can't...

and now I want to tutor you all in maths...because it is so easy! It really really is....WAY WAY easier than history or english lit...or French. French in particular is fecking impossible in comparison to maths.

Geography is stupidly hard in comparison to maths....and German? bloody hell...I am getting the sweats just thinking about how utterly shite I was at German.

I live in a bubble...and I know it...and love every single one of my often cross purposes infuriating conversations on MN that adds a new bubble to my bubble...a bubble extension.....a bubblett....(physics was definitely the loser in that analogy).

I should drink more and post less....or at least post less like i am drinking...

oh and I do indeed luffs you hully

YouTheCat · 07/02/2014 17:47

I'd rather study History. I like a subject where I can use my imagination a bit.

NewtRipley · 07/02/2014 17:49

I like you Ice

NewtRipley · 07/02/2014 17:49

But don't get too comfortable

catsrus · 07/02/2014 17:57

Maths is ace because you can get 100% in exams and assignments. Very satisfying, none of this "you didn't quite explain coherently enough to get the higher grade" nonsense Grin. OTOH my db did PG maths at Uni. I understood every single word of the sentences he used to explain his research - but not what the sentences meant when the words were strung together Confused. 'tis very esoteric once you get beyond a certain level......

magimedi · 07/02/2014 17:59

I think that there is a bit of freedom going to the head going on with piling in. It is very rare to have a mainstream site where you can swear as freely as you do here & when new people see you can say fuck etc they think it's the right thing to do. I've been her about 18 months now & have learnt how to sit on my hands or just report & say nothing. (Will admit to saying I had reported on the nappy thread as I was so disgusted by it).

Ice I would love you to teach me maths - I had really bad teachers at school & just scraped a GCE pass at second attempt, many. many years ago.

I would love to understand just WHY two minuses make a plus & be able to get my head round things like imaginary numbers & algebra.

catsrus · 07/02/2014 18:00

languages? yes, illogical buggers - apart from computer code, which has rules you keep to - hmm maybe that explains a lot about Ice and me Wink

NewtRipley · 07/02/2014 18:05

I like maths now. I so regret not having had any good teachers. Whereas my DSs just get it in a way I never di

NewtRipley · 07/02/2014 18:05

d

catsrus · 07/02/2014 18:07

oooh can I try one mag? when you think of two minuses it might help to think of a double negative e.g.
"he is not unattractive" - which means you think he is attractive. one negative takes something away, the other cancels it out.

Just to confuse you a bit, maybe, you can add minuses together {-2-2 = -4} "he is unattractive and he is mean" but when you multiply them {-2(-2) = 4} then the minuses get cancelled.

magimedi · 07/02/2014 18:11

I like your analogy, but why does it change when it is multiplied?

NewtRipley · 07/02/2014 18:12

yes, because isn't multiplication just repetitive addition?

magimedi · 07/02/2014 18:13

PS DH is cooking & it's ready so have to go & may have a Wine but will be back later - but I suspect that Wine & maths aren't great companions. Grin

catsrus · 07/02/2014 18:45

ok lets see if this helps.

Your outgoings are £1000 per month (lets say from a fixed sum in savings) so that is £1000 for each month you pay

  • 1000 x 12 = -12,000

So you have spent 12,000, you "have" - £12,000 off your fixed sum.

lets say youre super rich fairy godmother says she will pay for all your outgoings for the next year, what do you now have? well each month you are NOT losing the £1000 (its a double negative see) There are NOT 12 lots of MINUS £1000. You save the 12,000.

NOT (12) lots of MINUS (1000)

  • 12 x - 1000 =12,000

tbh I always found it easier to just remember it was a rule and I think understanding WHY it worked just dawned on me later Grin

SpinDoctorofAethelred · 07/02/2014 18:50

I cannot wrap my head around the idea that there is anyone who couldn't get an A at A-level maths if only it were taught properly..

I sympathise with this view, because I find maths (and languages ) the easiest subjects on the curriculum, but this is the GCSE maths pass rate each year. Fortunately for me, my school wasn't sure which stream to put me in for months, Grin so I spent time in GCSE maths group C, B and A. As a result, I got that not everyone can do A-level. If it wasn't for that, I still wouldn't!
