but how can dozens upon dozens of swearing riddled instructions to carry out intimate acts be considered a reasonable response?

For some people MN is the first forum they frequent. It is perfectly possible to post something that is innocently ignorant yet massively outrageous to MNers. Then suddenly you are being called all the names under the sun and told to fuck yourself preferably until dead? really?

Believe me it can be a massive shock that people say things on the internet they would never say in real life. It is possible to feel very very frightened and threatened by such an onslaught.

AIBU to think if the last 5 posters have covered the 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' angle then maybe you don't need to stick the boot in too?

The best case scenario is that the person on the other end is indeed a troll....in which case why are you giving them what they want?

When I was in primary school, maths was presented as puzzles to solve. Maths was fun. It was my favourite subject.

When I was in secondary school, maths became problems! Why? Don't they think teenagers have enough problems without adding maths to the list? Maths was much more fun (and easier), when it was puzzles.*

*Disclaimer. Was at school in 70s & 80s, so maths teaching may have improved since I formed the above opinion.

I just thought 'wtf?' at Wanda's post wrt Mary, then realised she posted it at 3am. She must be confusing Mary with someone else - I've done that at 3am before...

I've been on MN for about 6 years on & off, was very prolific about 3 years ago but rarely on here these days, what I noticed back then was it was always the same posters on the controversial threads, nothing wrong with that providing they are sticking to the rules, but it was the amount of time & emotional energy they were obviously investing that fascinated me, I often wondered how they ever got anything else done. ( whilst not getting anything else done myself ) haha.
