Friend's racist boyfriend

Name change for obvious reasons.

My friend of about 10 years has recently got herself a new boyfriend. It's looking serious but we haven't met him yet I.

AIBU to refuse to meet him given the fact that his Facebook page is nothing but anti-muslim "jokes", racist diatribes and other general unpleasantness?

He posts links from the EDL, the BNP and even less savoury groups. There is literally nothing else on his wall.

My friend seems smitten with him, and excuses his online behaviour by saying that he just has strong opinions.

What worries me is how I am supposed to make small-talk with such a man. He doesn't know me but I already feel that I know quite enough about him. Having said that, at some point my friend is going to want me to meet him.

Actually Clarkson you are right. The EDL aren't racist because Islam isn't a race. They're actually Islamophobic. Quite right. Thanks for keeping us right.

It is a 'thing' that I have noticed in common with all the EDL supporters I have had to de-friend.

Back to the OP - I wouldn't meet him. I would give her a wide berth too from now on. These aren't strong views. These are offensive, incendiary and cruel opinions which hurt and damage real people.

He is being vile and hateful about people. Who wants to meet someone like that.

Freedom of speech and all that but I'm surprised that FB allow such comments to remain on there. Are they not just aiding racist behaviour?
If a gathering of EDL is policed on the street then why shouldn't it be policed on the screen.

Clarkson you will not (thank goodness) convince the majority on here that the EDL are not racist.

Not sure if you know this but at least one of the ELD's marches was heavily promoted on the fascist and white supremacist website "Stormfront.".

Apologies. I've been away from the computer for a an hour or two and this thread has kind of exploded.

I name changed as I'm uncertain as to whether this friend reads Mumsnet. I like the advice so far. I might meet him once. Then at least I have something solid to base my opinions on rather than simple Facebook stalking. The other groups I mentioned he posts on are things like "English patriots", "Love Pork Hate Islam", "English and Proud" etc. Just one look at these groups and you'll see that they are out and out racist so there's no chance that he's misunderstanding the context of his posts.

redshifter take a lil look at some of the Facebook pages then and you will see how the EDL 'aren't racist'. You might even find it strangely horrifically compelling reading that there are people out there with such views (as I have in the past, hence my 'vast' knowledge of these pages!)

In the meantime there is always this little gem - racism, total ignorance and a smigen of comedy in there as well (disclaimer - I am sure this man does not represent all EDL members, most are highly articulate, caring and intelligent individuals who just want those muslamic ray guns outta here!)
