Friend's racist boyfriend

theskythestonethewaythekey · 05/02/2014 09:30

Name change for obvious reasons.

My friend of about 10 years has recently got herself a new boyfriend. It's looking serious but we haven't met him yet I.

AIBU to refuse to meet him given the fact that his Facebook page is nothing but anti-muslim "jokes", racist diatribes and other general unpleasantness?

He posts links from the EDL, the BNP and even less savoury groups. There is literally nothing else on his wall.

My friend seems smitten with him, and excuses his online behaviour by saying that he just has strong opinions.

What worries me is how I am supposed to make small-talk with such a man. He doesn't know me but I already feel that I know quite enough about him. Having said that, at some point my friend is going to want me to meet him.

OP posts:

That'll be all the extra d crowding out the light.

RandyRudolf · 05/02/2014 11:45

I think some posters are too harsh the way they jump down some poster's necks just because they get the terminology wrong. Mixed race, coloured, half caste. All these terms were acceptable at one time and perhaps not everyone is as up to date as they should be. There's no need for a personal attack, just politely point out that a particular phrase is no longer acceptable.

BuzzardBird · 05/02/2014 11:45

'Racist' and 'thick' usually go hand in hand.

clarksonforPM · 05/02/2014 11:46

why are they racist if they join the EDL ?

mistermakersgloopyglue · 05/02/2014 11:46

Well redshifter the number of times I have seen 'if you don't like the way we do things here, then go home' on EDL Facebook pages, would suggest to me that many members do not see people of other races as 'English'.

redshifter · 05/02/2014 11:46

I cannot believe in these days of knowledge being available at the tip of your fingers that people are still so incredibly dim!
Please point me to this knowledge as clicking away so far I havn't found racism with EDL. Only been 15 minutes on my part though so please give some links or something so I can make myself less dim.

ViviPru · 05/02/2014 11:46

Seems it's become fashionable to spout insane ramblings on MN these days to stir up drama too. What's going on lately?

Dahlen · 05/02/2014 11:47

If England has an identity it's one of being a melting pot of different peoples settling here - Romans, Angles, Saxons, Franks, Vikings to name but a few - oh and not to forget that ultimately the first people settled here from Africa.

clarksonforPM · 05/02/2014 11:47

Hahahahaha - blaming the bankers ! - Brilliant, another mumsnet classic !

RandyRudolf · 05/02/2014 11:48

You frequent such pages from the sound of it mister. I can't say I know any EDL members and certainly wouldn't trawl Facebook looking for any.

KirjavaTheCat · 05/02/2014 11:48

Just Shock at some of these replies. Coloured - really? Hmm

Actually OP I've been in a similar situation. My friend was serious with a guy who loved to be totally outrageously racist, in a totes ironic way. Friend was totally ok with it. Expected me to find the funny side of his jokes. We're no longer friends.

Be grateful for the revelation that either your friend is either a racist or a racist sympathizer (you know, those people who 'disagree' with racists but can totally see where they're coming from, in a way).

mistermakersgloopyglue · 05/02/2014 11:49

Yes but randy rudolph the problem usually comes from someone using an inappropriate phrase, it being pointed out to them that it is no longer acceptable, and then the person insisting that the phrase is ok because 'that's what we said when I was a child' etc rather than just saying 'oh shit yeah, I can see why that might be offensive I won't say it again'.

BuzzardBird · 05/02/2014 11:49

Oh, I get it. Well done. Here have my first Biscuit, sorry it's not a 'coloured' one! Hmm

WilsonFrickett · 05/02/2014 11:49

Hmm seriously, would you care to explain your 'shadow of its former self' comment then clarkson?

Or are you unable to do so and stay within talk guidelines?

Nataleejah · 05/02/2014 11:50

mistermakersgloopyglue well, don't ask me... Speaking of this particular individual, there are people who tell him -- you got beaten up by blacks, now you'll get beaten up by whites (antifa are very very agressive in our area, and they really hate EDL).

Myself i never been interested in those groups, so not much of an expert. All i'm saying just don't try to judge somebody before you know, especially based on nonsense posted on facebook.

FederationPresidentBarryFife · 05/02/2014 11:50

Oh hang on clarkson might be right. He might not be racist - he might just be really really really stupid and not realised that the EDL are a racist organisation. And, I believe, through the potent form of satire clarkson has raised that possibility. BRAVO Clarkson for embodying true stupidity and holding a mirror up to his actions.

BuzzardBird · 05/02/2014 11:52

No clarkson said shaddow because he/she is defending the English language, or something? Hmm

clarksonforPM · 05/02/2014 11:53

I've said it before and I'll say it again, maybe in capitals for those that are a little, slow, shall we say - THE EDL ARE NOT RACIST

redshifter · 05/02/2014 11:54

Wellredshifterthe number of times I have seen 'if you don't like the way we do things here, then go home' on EDL Facebook pages, would suggest to me that many members do not see people of other races as 'English'

Ah. Well have haven't looked at any Facebook pages, didn't think of that [embarrassed]. That is why I was asking for links.

I have found out that the EDL doesn't have a membership though.

Treaclepot · 05/02/2014 11:54

Clarkson, I know blaming the bankers for financial problems in this country, fuck me how stupid must people be. They had nothing to do with, in fact not even sure the bankers effect the economy and employment at all.

WilsonFrickett · 05/02/2014 11:55

What Buzzard is inaccurate spelling a 'thing' now? Well I never...

BuzzardBird · 05/02/2014 11:55

That is because they are too thick to fill in forms red HTH?

Treaclepot · 05/02/2014 11:56

Too true clarkson the EDl are not racist at all, they just hate anyone that is islamic. Thats not racist at all. Oh no no.

Jinsei · 05/02/2014 11:56

Sorry nataleejah, but if people choose to post racist bile all over Facebook, I will judge them. And I judge you too for defending them.

There is never an excuse for racism. Never.

NaggingNellie · 05/02/2014 11:56

Are you an ethnic minority?

even if you aren't its bad, was just thinking if you are how could your mate think thats okay for her bf to say those things/share those things.
